Re: Secret 4G ipod Features?

Go back to the post about the Charlie and the chocolate factory contest. Read the part about having to put a code into your ipod to see if you've won. That code is going to unlock the color part of the screen. Right now software is making it look just like the rest of the ipods but when you punch in that code if you have a golden ticket it really will be a "golden" icon, if not then it will just unlock the software that allows the screen to be color.

I continue to be amazed at the crap that a silly reckless article from TIME can spawn.

When my 40 GB G4 iPod actually arrives (waiting 2 weeks so far

2 WEEKS!! Do you live in Europe or anyplace else but the US? I live in Missouri, USA. I ordered my 20 gb 4G iPod on Sunday afternoon, it shipped Monday afternoon from China, and it got to my house at 8:40 AM Tuesday morning. So, it took 1 day for Apple to ship it and about 15 hours for it to get to my house from China after it shipped. Apple said it would ship by August 4th, and I ended up getting it August 3rd. Don't know why yours would take soo long. If you live in the US, that is really odd. If not, then maybe international shipments are delayed.

Live in Scotland UK. Yeah but the thing is there are Apple store world wide, so really it shouldn't matter where i live. However should have gotten here today, but flight was redirected due to fog. So will be delivered tomorrow. Hoewever i can't be arsed waiting one more day, so when it arrives at the depot tonight, i am going there in the car to pick it up personally. :)

Just got my new 4g 40gig straight from Shanghi today.

Only couple grumblings. The Firewire cord is two feet shorter than the one I got with my 3g 30gig. No slip/belt case, and no wired remote anymore. At least they left the dock as part of the 40gig... The clickwheel is worth the difference as far as I'm concerned, though.

I for one cannot wait for home on iPod...

My grumbling is...why is Apple shipping them from Shanghai?? That is causing delays in orders. I ordered 2 when they came out and got them FedEx next day, and now I order another and its on the slow boat from China? If I am lucky it might come tomorrow...or I'll have to wait until Monday.

Well, you can join them when importing them into iTunes...

Yeah, and lose the ability to skip within tracks if you join them - not to mention iTunes then makes the song name the sum of all the tracks you've joined.

I think this is a really simple matter Apple should address.

I spoke to a Apple store rep about the rumored ipod secret and he gave me this look and said "its obvious what the secret is, an airport card for the Ipod is coming (It has Wifi capabilities)" He then went on about how you'll be able to access all the Airport Express adaptors on your network, wireless isync, and an Internet browser and email client for the ipod. The guy was excited and wouldn't shut up after that! If that happens to be a fact, maybe this is PalmOne's reason for not supporting the Mac anymore.

As a former iPod tech support rep, I can tell you that if you listen to someone in an Apple Store, especially about unreleased products, there's something wrong with you. Seriously, the support reps don't know about this stuff until it was announced, and neither do the store employees. A lot of them don't know much about the products that are already out now. Oh, and please stop acknowledging that guy who doesn't know how to reset his iPod. If you leave the iPod off for several hours, it goes into "Deep Sleep" and does stop using power. That's why if you leave your iPod off for a couple days and come back to it, the apple logo comes up.

Not that I believed him, but when you think about it, what's the number one complaint about the Airport Express (no remote control). If I have to bet the house on what the secret feature is, I would say it's some kind of attachment that would allow you to stream from your ipod to an Airport Express. Also remember that... Rumors are allowed on MACRUMORS!

No, I agree. I would love to see the iPod be able to stream wirelessly to the AirPort Express. It's a totally feasable option for Apple to implement it, and it would (along with the click wheel) be a HUGE selling point. As far as video out, I can't really forsee that any timr soon. Even though there was that rumor way back that started because of a job posting requiring someone with experience with audio and video codecs. It's just not logical. If you want to use video out, it's more practical to do it using an iBook or PowerBook. But AirTunes streaming from an iPod? Way cool!

I'm looking to buy an AirPort Express soon, this feature would kick! Also it would push me to buy a new iPod.

Radio just doesn't make sense. Above all, Apple is about THE BOTTOM LINE. Why would they allow you to listen to the radio and therefore drastically reduce your incentive to BUY music from the iTMS??? Ridiculous.

Gee, well, if you say so. Silly us who want an iPod with a radio. :)

Ridiculous or not, there are many people that opt for another player just because the iPod doesn't have a radio. I know of three co-workers that won't get one because of this. Another two just got a competitors player with a radio.

As for your theory regarding Apple's bottom line being hurt by including a radio, I strongly disagree. Would Apple rather NOT sell an iPod than sell it? Yea, Apple will pass on the opportunity of selling you a $399 iPod because you may listen to the radio way too much and not buy enough iTunes songs...

How about the people that don't download from iTunes, but choose to buy the CD and import it at a higher rate than that offered by iTunes? If apple "allows" this, there is no reason (other than technical, of course) why not to include a radio.

Actually a good chunk of the songs from the iTMS are better than CD quality. Besides, I bought my iPod so I wouldn't HAVE to listen to the radio. I don't like being told what music I should like.

How do you figure they are better than CD quality????????
Listening to the radio is your choice. I think a radio would be a great feature. Talk about choice!

just curious.

Better than CD quality!? Name one. I am afraid you do not know what CD quality means.

I totally agree. But at least you have to be given a choice. How is anyone telling you what to listen to by giving you an ipod with a radio? I can't understand your argument. I am assuming you can make you own choices in life. If so, you can choose to either listen to the radio or listen to your iPod songs. Isn't it nice having a choice?

A lot of the songs from the iTMS are not rips from CDs, rather they are taken from the original master tapes. That along with the fact that 128k AAC is better than CD quality is the basis of my argument. This isn't going to be true with every song, but there are quite a bit that fall into this category.

Also, I think a radio would be a cool feature, but it may be too "low quality" for Apple to implement. It seems that they only provide features that will provide a great user experience and the problem with most small portable radios is that without some big antenna extending from it, the reception can be iffy. Now if the rumor about wifi on the 4G iPods is true, and they implemented the iTunes radio into the iPod's software, so you can listen to it whenever you're "connected" to any 802.11x source, that would kick ass. :)

Hi Sirjimithy,

128 AAC is near CD quality. Near as in "worse than" :)

Listen to the same song on a good stereo sampled at 160 or 192 Kbps AAC (those rates are closer to near CD quality), and you'll notice how far 128 is from CD quality.

128K AAC is not better than CD quality. It is still compressed audio. The only apple format that is the same as CD quality is apple lossless. You would not be able to tell the difference between AAC on lower end speakers and headphones, but the difference might be noticable on high end systems.

I really can't see the point about WiFi in an iPod. I mean the iPod is such a small transportable device that you can just place it next to your stereo and plug it in. Period.

Cheers

The Only Reason I am Against Radio in Ipod

Is that it would be in the ipod.

i know it woudlnt be hard...well...no..it probably would be...but i wouldnt want a radio in there.

i am not buying the ipod for radio capabilities... there are third party accesories..(err..i dn't know, never checked)

Hate to break it to ya, but Apple lossless isn't actually lossless. I'm about 99% sure that it is simply extremely highly sampled AAC so that no human ear can tell the difference. If you notice, the sound file is still a .m4a file, which is AAC.

Apple lossless is lossless, although on an extremely high-end system you might be able to tell the difference between lossless and original cd if you were an audiophile. The thing about lossless is that you don't have the quality degredation you have with the other highly compressed formats, for instance, going from mp3>cd>mp3, there's quality degredation there. But, with lossless, you can change format/encoding with no degredation in quality.

iPod Radio

I don't recall where I was reading about someone going nuts not being able to listen to their NPR shows because of the iPod not having a radio, but.... There are a few work-arounds: buy a set of headphones with built in radio tuner, get an RSS reader that exports text files to your iPod or that text to speech option that would create mp3's of your RSS feeds (sounds scary, I know), or just get in the car when your shows are on. I don't listen to the radio personally, as I would find myself hating more music than I do currently due to the overplaying nature of radio. But, I will hook my iPod up in my car, so that if (I don't know how) I would ever tire from (possilbly) 40 gigs of music then I could simply hit the radio button on my head unit. However, I must say that if digital radio broadcasting caught on and the receivers could be small enough to fit in an iPod, I wouldn't have a problem with the implementation of said hardware. It's just that current radio, especially small radio's in portables can't play back a quality high enough to warrant a residence in the iPod. 40 gigs of music with no ads and the ability to change what's playing at any time sounds good enough to me.

I started another thread re Apple's appalling delivery times in Europe. The difference between the service received in the States and that in Europe is really quite remarkable. I ordered my iPod 10 mns after the store came up and it took 3 weeks to arrive... I sent it back I was so pissed off..
