Downloading movies is definitely going to be big in a few years, so I think we should expect Apple to begin selling movies thru the iTMS pretty soon (1-2 years)... (i'm just guessing of course :) )

no matter how much they through in any regular iPod, i don't think i would trade the size of my mini for it. I do not have more than a few hundred songs that I regularly listen to, so I do not need the 20gb of space the regular ipod provides.

when it comes to gadgets, size does matter!

i think i have it, it's i/o recording with a digital i/o aswell. If you look in the headphone socket theres a digital i/o. Isn't there?

I hope so.

in my iPod 4g in settings->main menu, there is an option for "Photo import" and it's turned off. Since I went from a 1G 5GB to this, I don't know if this was a feature in the 3G ipods or not, but I thought I'd mention it. It's currently set to "off"

Seriously though, I doubt it's any sort of wireless or else cracking it open would show you the chips for bluetooth or 802.11. Probably some nifty software enhancements for 3-rd party devices (ie: the recorder and digital photo storage thingy)

I haven't read the entire 300+ posts, so forgive me if a rational voice has already piped in here, but there is NO way the currently sold iPods can support wireless of any kind without fully noting that capability and specs on the box in a fairly noticeable manner. This is true even if the current software of the devices does not take advantage of the wireless hardware. If there is wireless hardware, or, rather, hardware of any sort which is physically capable of emitting waves in the radio bands controlled by the government, the FCC requires complete and proper documentation of that prior to sale.

That's it, period. There is no wireless hardware in the current 4G iPod, because the box doesn't say it's there.

Now, of course, a 4.5G or maybe even 5G iPod may have wireless capabilities, which take advantage of circuitry which exists in the 4G iPod currently ... or perhaps an add-on which takes advantage of the 4G's built-in circuitry (perhaps something like the voice recorder) ... but it is simply legally impossible for the current 4G iPod to be a firmware update away from transmitting anything wirelessly.

Given Apple's history, I'm not too sure about this story. I expect we might see additional add-ons which haven't been talked about yet, but Apple just isn't the type of company that will sell you a piece of hardware and then give a software update which radically changes that hardware's capabilities. Ask any 1G, 2G, or 3G iPod owner how likely Apple is to update an iPod you do today with cool new features ...

I figured out what the secret feature is...

This is why they moved the buttons to the front and the sound port to the center.

They will sell an infrared add on, that plugs into the sound port, to make a remote control out of the iPod.

Remember Griffin Technology was going to sell exactly such a device and suddenly all information on the product, for the iPod and Macs, disappeared their web site !!!

They stated that Apple did not give them permission to produce the product.

But is it just a unified remote or it is a remote specifically for ?

Answer, a remote control for the Airport Express is the primary application !!!

Turning your iPod off...

Umm... you can press and hold the play/pause button for several seconds to turn the iPod off.

Apple should include a quick reference card for people who normally don't read instruction manuals.

Jeez! Does everyone get as far as that post then hit the Quote button? I think this question has been answered more times than I've tried shoes on today. And believe me, I tried on a lot of shoes today. Of course, as soon as buy summer shoes, the summer will end.

rant.. rant.. rant.. rant :)

I don;t know if this is a new feature with the 4G iPod, but Ive only just noticed it and I think it's awesome:

When something is playing, and the cable is yanked out of the headphone jack, the iPod automatically pauses! This is great for audiobooks where it can be annoying to go back and figure out where you were. Anybody know if this is a new feature? I love it!!

ipod a Palm Killer

I spoke to a Apple store rep about the rumored ipod secret and he gave me this look and said "its obvious what the secret is, an airport card for the Ipod is coming (It has Wifi capabilities)" He then went on about how you'll be able to access all the Airport Express adaptors on your network, wireless isync, and an Internet browser and email client for the ipod. The guy was excited and wouldn't shut up after that! If that happens to be a fact, maybe this is PalmOne's reason for not supporting the Mac anymore.

complete bs.

store reps know no more than you and i at this point. maybe a day before a realse they know something, but not far in advance.

The only feature I care about being implemented in the future.

http://www.pretentiousname.com/mp3players/

mp3s and aac have gaps (odd silence or a click) between tracks because they encode partial or empty frames at the end of a song. with live albums this is most noticeable, but others like Abbey Road where tracks run into each other will show it as well.

the Rio Karma can handle these by dropping empty frames and the sudden silence that occurs with partial frames. i think Apple needs some feedback on this topic. and it's something that should be possible through firmware.

pretty please Apple?

I did not know about this before...

It looks like the new iPod could use a new mini WiFi adapter.

http://rfdesign.com/news/mini-WIFI-module/

That would fit the discription that everyone would want to upgrade to it.

Come to think of it the Airport Express looks like it might be too small to hold the traditional WiFi card.

 :D   :p

Well, you can join them when importing them into iTunes...

If you want to remove the gap of silence that normally occurs between songs, select two or more adjacent songs and choose Advanced > Join CD Tracks.

Maybe just maybe apple will put out that desktop app on your ipod now. Remember we talked about this a while ago. When you connect your ipod to any computer you would be able to use your desktop from the ipod it is connected to.

You can already do this on your own. Search google for "ipod ir remote."

PS why isn't anyone talking about a new dock that could enable some of the features being talked about here (wi-fi, etc)? Maybe the new features need a dock to work?

Radio

My guess is that it could be a radio. Let's look at the details:

1. a digitally tuned radio can be very small. Some watches even have them built in. I'm sure they could have squeezed that onto the main circuit board and no one would know the difference.

2. the scrool wheel would make it very easy to tune the radio. Just scroll through the dial just like turning the knob on your radio.

3. The headphones could be used as an antenna so no additional wires or add-ons or accessories would be needed.

4. The radio uses almost no power. My walkman can power the radio on 2 dead AA batteries for a good day. You could use the iPod for much longer than 12 hours if all you were doing was listening to the radio.

5. All they would have to do is release a new software update that would activate the radio feature and we are all in business.

Now, before everyone starts flaming me about why the hell would I want to listen to the radio, I offer you these suggestions:

1. NPR
2. Howard Stern
3. Weather Forecasts
4. Traffic Updates

None of these can I get from my iPod as is, so it would be a great benefit to have a radio built in.

Bry

Radio? Hmm...

I agree with brydeemer. When my 40 GB G4 iPod actually arrives (waiting 2 weeks so far ) i would love a radio on it, since i spend most of my day listening to radio on my phone. Although i offer another reason to want one:

*Radio 1 (Chris Moyles, Jo Wylie, Edith and Colin, Scott Mills, Wes, Vernon.)*

Yeah one more vote here for radio. It just makes sense. I guess I could see why it might dilute the digital media focus of th ipod, but insofar as the ipod ramains primarily an audio device, radio seems like a perfect additon.

Radio just doesn't make sense. Above all, Apple is about THE BOTTOM LINE. Why would they allow you to listen to the radio and therefore drastically reduce your incentive to BUY music from the iTMS??? Ridiculous.

I agree with the "wi-fi" add-on device to control AirPort Express. Useful...YES. More money...YES. Which is why they'll do it.

Can you imagine trying to browse the internet on your ipod screen? It'd be far, far worse than the Newton (which was also a grayscale screen). That's just not going to happen... sorry.

Hey, you found my biggest fear of what Apple might become. The signs are already there.
"Why give people a product they want if it interferes with another Apple product?"

Luckily there's evidence to the contrary... they give iMovie away, which affects sales of Final Cut Express. They still recognise the value of giving the user what they want.

(That said, I doubt it's radio, someone would have noticed on the circuit boards. Also, radio has some differences in different countries so it makes international iPods more difficult)

This is the one thing that annoys the heck out of me ever since the first iPod. That the thing doesn't have an ON/OFF switch. Drains the batteries needlessly (because it takes a while before it goes into standby) and also screws you over big time if your iPod crashes on the road with no Mac/PC nearby to reset it. Never heard of iPod crashing, yes it does that every once in a while, at least for me when it has problems reading a track. Locks up and doesn't react to any input from the buttons anymore, and no ON/OFF switch to reset it!
C'mon Apple, its just a simple button/switch!
Regards,

Ahmed (owner of a 1st Gen iPod)

hold down the play button for ~ 5 seconds to power it off. to perform a reset, hold down both menu and play for ~ 5 seconds as well. you'll see the apple logo display to indicate that it's rebooting. my ipod is a second gen, but i'm pretty sure this works with any generation of ipod.
