who needs 8gb, sheesh. i barely use 2gb of my 4gb of ram as it is. even using photoshop, I have never seen it max out.

Have you ever tried video encoding before? Take a massive BluRay rip and convert it to MP4 H264 format with multiple passes and see if you can browse firefox with allot of tabs open. My MBP is my main computer so it needs to be fast...that said an SSD is another option.

i bought new ram today to upgrade my macbook pro to 8gb ram
but when i enter the 2 x 4gb memory cards in the macbook and look at the "about this mac" it still states i have only 4gb of ram installed.. it just ignores one slot

which it does recognize when i have 2 x 2gb in them..

am i doing something wrong??

Do you have the correct EFI/firmware version? --> MBP51.007E.B05

Maybe a bad module? Install first module, and check if it is detected. Then remove it and put the other one and check if that is detected.

i tried that, but no luck.. this is getting a bit frustrating
the weird thing is, when i put one 4gb and one 2gb module in there it doesn't recognize the 2gb one either..

Wow I am a moderator here, and just now noticed this.

I am ecstatic to hear this news. I have a system covered by this, and am in the process of obtaining both an SSD, and caddy to replace / remove my Superdrive to move my current HDD to that location.

Having the ability to upgrade to 8GB will be a great asset to breath new life into this, still quick (for me), laptop.

Just got the 8 GB kit :D SSD is on my Xmas list ;)

Just updated my late-2008 Aluminum unibody Macbook from 4GB to 8GB. $29.95 for Corsair pair at Fry's (after $20 rebate). It sees the full 8GB.

I'm running a MBP 2.53ghz (Late 2008) so super happy I can now upgrade from 4gb to 8gb!

I'm still running Leopard at the moment, I've got a copy of Snow Leopard but have held off the upgrade for compatibility issues, although these seem to have been solved now. Lion still looks like a no-go though...

Do I need to be running SL to get access to all 8gbs?

Yes, you need 10.6.6 or newer.

Does this also apply to MacBooks Early 2008? I read a few post somewhere else, that it's possible to work with 8GB RAM in a white MacBook Early 2008 (MB41.00C1.B00)

I already have 6GB in there but the more the better.
So does anyone have experience with that?

Question

Is this MBP51.007E.B05 or later? I have MBP51.007E.B06 on mine.

It is quite annoying that the screen flicker fix and this were not available earlier. I've had to suffer over the life of the machine and now that I'm almost ready to upgrade suddenly we're benefitting from these improvements!

I hate to revive this thread, but im having a bit of issue with installing ram. Currently my laptop has 4gb (2x2gb)

I bought 8gb (2 x 4gb) 204pin sodimm, 1066 speed ram from amazon. I got them today. My EFI is the latest MBP51.007E.B06 version. However, when i place both sticks into my computer i get 3 beeps signifying its not working. Then I put only one of the 4gb sticks into the computer (so a total of 4gb in the computer) and it would again beep 3 times and not work. I then took that stick and replaced it with the other 4gb stick (still only 4gb in the computer). This time there was no beep but the indicator light was solid white. The screen stayed black and even after 5 miniutes, nothing happened....

Im about to send the ram back to amazon for a full refund, but am i right in thinking i got defective ram? (the ram was bought as "used" btw) I bought it becasuse for some reason ram prices have skyrocketed! I bought 2 4gb sticks from amazon last summer and it was only $40! now 2 sticks are $70! so i figured id buy the used ram for $45 ish...i regret that now and i think ill just stick to the 4gb my computer has right now.
