I cant remember the last time I connected one of these cables to my computer - I tend to use them only for charging. Everything else (icloud backups etc) is all wireless......

It's not the range you can achieve but the ability to establish a duplex connection. They could send a signal on a WiFi band to carry out a function using one - way transmission, but you could do the same thing by hiding the setup in a USB drive. If the want to monitor over a duplex connection both devices need to be in range of the lowest range device, and I doubt they get a mile transmission range in an Apple iPhone cable.
Note that they don't claim the ability to establish a duplex connection at that range, only that they were able to "trigger payloads" (and no mention of monitoring). They could do that with a one-way connection.

I did which is why I said they could do it, but that duplex is a problem. Frankly, the whole cable thing is not that innovative, IMHO.

Apple really needs to put a "switch" in Settings to turn off data capabilities of the USB connection. They also need to have an option to shorten the time the device is off before the data port locks up.
