And change is necessary, however great a current os or device looks, it's crucial to keep things fresh because that's what people want.
I don’t know that a majority necessarily wants that, above the age of 30 or so, especially when it comes with usability trade-offs. Regardless, they could have a standard utilitarian theme and visually fancy themes as an extra, similar to how Windows still offered the Classic theme throughout Windows 7 (so for roughly 20 years total). Yes there are accessibility options in iOS, but the resulting look is an afterthought and tends to be incoherent.

Why is this such a popular thing to say? It’s nothing like Vista, and Vista was originally based on Apple’s design at the time. So what is this about?
Regarding the latter, it’s because it’s socially accepted to **** on Vista, but not on Aqua.

Vista and Aqua actually had significantly less legibility issues.

less? aqua never had legibility issues

Aha. I’ve used the beta for the past two days and have zero legibility issues. Not saying I like it, just saying I’ve no issues.

It looked decent on the home screen, but when you bring down the control center, everything just looks too busy and it does look hard to read. I hope Samsung does not go in this direction or if they do, there will be an option to make it look much more user friendly.

You could argue regarding the translucent menus:

And the stripes somewhat interfering with text, compared to a uniform background:

It’s minor, but it’s not nothing.

When I saw Minority Report, I remember wondering why anyone would want a see-through computer screen. Seeing things behind the glass would make my brain work so much harder to filter out the distractions coming through. I would want to see my text and numbers and pictures PLAINLY. Even if you frost the glass, why the heck do I want various shapes and colors showing through? There has got to be some physiological issues your head will be dealing with.

Windows 8.0 was released in 2012 which, although it still retains most of the design from Windows 7, the glass part of Windows Aero was dropped and its MetroUI/ModernUI adopted flat icons.

iOS 7 followed the flat design when it was released in 2013 while android 5 Lollipop introduced the flat icons in 2014.

Microsoft is slowly bringing back 3D and depth with Windows 11 while Google will definitely follow the footsteps of iOS 26 with android 17 or android 27.

I know the flat design trend has been around for a long while, I just really never liked it. I never understood where the love for that came from. And I only occasionally had to work on Win 8-10 over the years, but now frequently have to use 11, and while it might be bringing back some 3D and depth, it's still horrible compared to contemporary macOS (which is a rather low bar to begin with).

Reminds me of this from Star Trek

Other than in a tv show or movie, it’s completely awful

I’d love to see a follow-up article that shows “here's what iOS 26 looks like with increased contrast, and here with reduced motion, etc."
There will be too much changing throughout the beta (the WWDC sessions already show some changes), so that probably wouldn’t make too much sense at this point.

Yes, because Apple can’t find enough people amongst its 164,000 employees to do two things at once
You would be amazed at how inefficient large publicly trade companies become.

Eventually what happens is you end up where 10% does 90% of the work and they spend their having to work on what the Top brass feel is considered sexy and forget the rest.

Teams would have 20 employees but really 2-4 carry the whole team while the rest just exist and get in the way etc.

So yeah it’s not as simple as you think.

Not only that, there’s also a lot of butt kissing and a lot of the staff just does something to stay relevant and to have a “meets expectations” on their annual performance review. Combined you get that lazy lame “something” from a butt kisser who got their way for who they are friends with not what they know. And at Apple this is very much encouraged. When I saw the post WWDC videos for developers (look them up on Apple’s youtube page), you will see how clueless they are about what they’re saying, and yet there they are…

So instead of bug fixes and under the hood improvements, we get eye candy. I'm glad Apple has its priorities straight.🤦‍♂️
I mean these operating systems will always have some sort of bugs. I personally haven't found the current OS's very buggy recently. Fixing bugs doesn't entice most users to upgrade their OS or hardware so can't really blame Apple for not solely concentrating on fixing bugs. They are still in it to make money at the end of the day.

If anything, people wanted visual improvements. This is not it (IMO) when the text isn't so easy to read (using Auto setting). This would probably be very difficult to read outdoors in direct sun light.

Dark setting with more contrast is much better

I'm thinking the dark mode icons probably still look best overall vs either of the two clear?
