The bolded line is the one I have been thinking for some time. If you look at the 13" MBA and the 14 & 16" MBP, they are basically in the body of a 12" for the Air and either a 13" or 15" for the Pro, primarily because of the minimal bezels around the displays. With the 13" Air, that gives you the portability of a 12" with the display and additional ports of the 13"

It is trending that way, but the size and weight difference between the 12" and the 13" Air is still pretty dramatic in real life. 2lbs vs 2.7lbs isn't a lot on paper, and the size difference isn't a lot on paper, but that 12" was light and tiny and it puts it in a different class than the Air altogether.

Whether or not a market still exists for the 12" is another story, but unless you've used both of these side by side you might not appreciate the vast difference between them.

I currently have a 12in MacBook (2017 Intel), 14in MBP (2021 M1Max), 15in MBP (2017 Intel) and a 16in MBP (M1Max). I used to have a couple others, including an old 11in MBA and years back the wife and I both had 17in MBP's. I pretty much stopped using iMacs/Mini's/Pro's as the laptops are more practical for me.

The 14in M1Max MBP is my main computer, I use it as a desktop replacement. I had intended to use it when I travel but realized the 6 year old 12in MB works just fine for when the iPad just isn't enough. I kept the older Intel MacBook/MBP's since I use some radio programming stuff that does not work on Apple Silicon and eventually started using them around the house for various stuff rather than un-dock the main MBP.

All this said, the current layout of the 2 MBP sizes and 2 MBA sizes seems to be a good layout for the current times. For most people these days a MBA is plenty powerful enough for word processing, spreadsheets, watching videos and streaming. To tell the truth my little 12in is probably plenty powerful enough for 99% of what I do and what the vast majority of what people do. These days even an iPad is probably fine for most people, there are few things that can't be done on them.
