Thanks Chris, does the Innocase have any felt lining like the otterbox, or is it 'just' rubber? Also you spoke previously of a 'longer' review. Could you post a link? I'm waiting on a Vapor, however after yours, and White/Rhinos posts I'm really liking this case, talk about chalk and cheese. A friend has an otterbox for his 3Gs, he says it's water proof. From what you said I hope he never has to count on that. If the Innocase has no lining do you feel the phone will be 'scratched by the case' I've seen that happen before to 3's. Any away thanks for your help / advice.
The Innocase (which is the inner most part of the "Rugged" case), has a complete felt liner that protects the back of the phone. It's not going to scratch the back of the iPhone 4 at all. Remember that the Innocase slider case itself acts as the hard plastic interior of the Otterbox, and then the 2-piece Rugged kit goes over that. So you are never removing the Innocase even when using the Rugged case, unless you are wanting to go with a totally naked iPhone. I really haven't had time to do a more "lengthy" review, but I've been adding to this one and answering questions as posters ask them. And as far as the 3GS Otterbox being waterproof, the Defender is water "resistant" (meaning it could possibly handle a slight spray), as it has thin paper-like membranes covering the holes for the ear speaker and bottom mic and speaker. But many people complained about those coverings muting volume and muffling sound, so Otterbox didn't design them into the new Defender for the iPhone 4. Those openings on the new Defender are left completely open for sound to travel through unimpeded.
Added: Here's a pic of the interior lining of the case
