Portability is a key here. I'd like to start taking a laptop to school with me, and my backpack is heavy enough as it is with all my textbooks. Plus I would need a new battery for my iBook, as the one it has only lasts 30 minutes to an hour.

sounds like all signs point to netbook time. I had a dell mini 9 16gb that i bought for $317 new off ebay about 3 months ago. Put OS X on it in about 40 minutes problem free and was very happy with the portability and performance. If you buy the 6 cell battery you can make the thing last forever and it's incredibly light. Dell mini 9's are pretty cheap now too, you could get one in the 200's.

The Dell mini was my first choice, but it doesn't look like they offer an HDD option (I need more then 16 GB of space, 30 at least.) If only...🙁

I would suggest a Samsung NC10 or NC12 then. They have excellent keyboards and battery life.

Consult the boing boing netbook compatibility chart before you make a decision (even if you don't hackintosh your system, it's nice to know you can) and lay hands on the keyboard before you buy one.

I can find 12 inch PB's for that

Yes, you probably could.

The thing is, I'm looking to buy new. I'm sick of buying used and praying everything works, and/or finding out one or more things wrong with it that weren't mentioned when I was buying.

Another option that I was looking at besides the HP Mini 1000 was the Eee PC 1000HE. The specs seem very good for the price and it's got great battery life, however the one drawback is that it seems to be fairly thicker and heavier than it's competition.
