I honestly can't get my head around this. Like, outdated how?

Normal wii outdated. Its just my opinion.

Just a note to point out that even an opinion has to have some rationale. You haven't addressed the question asked...in what way is it outdate...specifically.

Just saying "in my opinion" is a non sequitur...essentially answering the question by saying "because".

I'll agree with the doctor11 on this one. I'm not a nintendo hater, far from it. But the wii u really is pretty crappy. Like OP, I tried to convince myself of the merits of it and finally found one of craigslist for $100 last fall.

Controller - if this thing would have been made prior to the iPad or smartphones, it would have been huge. But instead, personal touch screen devices have been around for awhile and the wii u controller feels like a cheap toy. Resistive touch screen, can't easily shut it off while watching netflix/etc, very few games do anything useful with it. They should have taken the playstation/vita approach and made them 2 separate but compatible systems. The fact that you can't effectively use the system without it and the fact that finding a replacement is way harder than it should be doesn't help either.

Games - I bought mine when Super Mario 3d World came out solely for the purpose of playing that game. I've played every one of the major mario console games since the original came out and this was by far the weakest of them all. What else is there? Mario Kart 8? Zelda? Smash brothers? Maybe those titles are exciting to the people who are just now getting into them or the nostalgic type, but every time I try one of those I feel like I've been playing the same thing since the n64 days. And those franchises are literally the only thing carrying it at this point.

The system itself - One of the big things that drew me to this was TVii. It essentially looked like one of the things I love about Roku (the ability to to type in content and find the best source to watch it) combined with a game system. It didn't really work out that way. The wii u versions of Netflix/Hulu/Amazon are probably some of the worst I have used. TVii failed to work a lot of the time, and the overall wii u menu system is sluggish and poorly laid out. They kept promising faster load times and menu response, but I never saw it in any of the updates during the time I owned the console. Kudos for being able to control my TV from the gamepad, thats kind of an interesting/different feature, but all that was really ever useful for was volume.

Lack of power - I'm not saying the console has to be stupidly powerful, but if youre not going to be on par with everyone else and don't bring anything particularly interesting to the table, don't expect to do well. The wii was a blockbuster success solely because it offered a new way to interact with the games that no one had done before and everyone wanted to try it. So they sold a crap ton of consoles and because of this, developers were scrambling to put out games due to wide mass adoption and the lack of power was not an issue. Now, you've bundled a tablet (something that everyone and their brother have had for ~3 years now) with an underpowered console and not too many people are impressed. Devs aren't exactly foaming at the mouth to make games for this like they were the wii. If it wasn't for Mario/Zelda franchise, this thing would have been quickly written off like the 3DO, Saturn, Jaguar, etc..

Online - My fault for not doing more research on this. I had assumed that like every other online ecosystem made in the past ~10 years, when I buy something it gets tied to my account. Not so with nintendo. I had ~$100 worth of stuff on my old wii that I sold several years ago. Imagine my surprise when I find out its completely impossible to get that stuff back because it was tied to the console. And, unless something has changed in the past few months, is still the exact same way with the wii u. Good job nintendo, the wii u is the only console I've never bought anything online for because I knew I would lose it when I sold the system.

And so after a couple months on craigslist and a lot of haggling, I finally got rid of the thing for $180. It was the black 32gb console with a wii motion plus controller and a copy of mario 3d world. At least I sort of broke even. Kudos if you like the system. I'm not singing praise for the ps4 or the xb1 either, but the wii u really is a pretty crappy system.

Seeing you in the Wii U thread was .... surprising!

Too much coffee!?!? :D

Maybe s/he think's it's the Wii?

I bought one two weeks ago and love it.

The games are fun! They're not violent or dark or claustrophobic, they're bright and colourful and sometimes really bloody difficult.

Playing on the game pad while the TV is on is great though the battery life really isn't much chop at all.

Mario Kart is truly stunning, it's so smooth and fun to play, the remake of Windwaker is great fun too.

I can be found being annoying on any thread!

It's not necessarily the topic that attracts me, it's the quality of the post that draws my attention.;)

And I thought I could spam my mindless drivel at least within these distant places without being observed by the All Seeing Shrink! ;)

Should check the espresso thread some more btw, I don't like my Lavazza beans any more. :(

:D

No that isn't explaining. Explaining is where you tell us the reasons why you think that.

I hope your Youtube videos about technology go into more detail than your posts.

Ok here comes explaing...
The wii u games are not that great. And to my understanding of it the wii u is a handheld game unless you "airplay" it to the tv. That's more like a $330 DS. I feel that it would be best to save up another $70 and buy a PS4. The PS4 is a real gaming console that will have almost every game you want, excluding the one made by Nintendo.

Your understanding is incorrect. You can 'airplay' games to the controller. So you get a console with the bonus of having remote play if you want.

You really can't find games like Nintendo games on any of the other consoles. They're generally easily accessible which is nice for if you have people over that might not be gamers. Most people can understand Mario Kart but not the nuances of something like Forza or Need For Speed. The system is just meant to be fun and on that front it delivers I think. If Nintendo was the only company making games for the system, I'd probably still buy one.

Great and convincing explanation! Can't say I'm surprised about it's content - glad people on here insisted on it.

FYI, what you called handheld is in reality only a controller, while the actual console isn't just the disc drive! You can connect this 'machinery' with the television - just like the good ol' NES back in the days - and enjoy the in your opinion not so great games, or not.

I mean I can perfectly understand everybody stating they aren't interested in Nintendo first party titles because of xyz and hence don't see the point in buying this specific console, but to call it crappy? Really?

Somebody correct me, but wasn't one of the big reasons for the success of th Wii the fact that people could easily crack it? Besides the motion controller innovation / novelty?

Panda ninja'd me to it. :D
OT: You should check one of the [WW] out once again, was great fun playing with you and they became quite entertaining again lately, Silent Panda.

You mean these games? Currently Nintendo have the highest rated game (Mario 3D World) and more highly rated games than anyone else. Granted it has also been out 18 months more but it doesn't eradicate your argument.

Games are streamed from the console to the gamepad, not the other way around.

PS4 is a real gaming console, yup, just like the Xbox One and Wii U. It will certainly have diluted versions of Nintendo games like Little Big Planet Kart to Mario Kart, or Playstation All Star Battle to Smash Bros.

Nah, not really. Yes it was popular among modders, but they sold more than 100 million units, and there are in no way that many geeks interested in Nintendo controllers.. ;)

It was cheap and fun. That's why it was a success.

Hackability is a huge selling point! It doesn't guarantee success, just look at the PSP and Dreamcast! But the easy hackability of the PS2, DS and Wii definitely helped them out. But maybe that's why people deliberately targeted them - because they were popular?

Well, I wouldn't know! Only came back to consoles after a ten year and more hiatus and didn't follow anything about them during that time but I read / heard this not too long ago. Of course the cheap price point and new control mechanism played the main factor, I guess.

I'd somewhat reverse that statement. Not the part about what is or isn't a real gaming console (they're all real consoles) but the games that I want. I have a Wii U, and a 3DS, because that's where all the games I want to play are. Even as an adult, I just find them to be more fun to play.

Pikmin 3 is a lot more fun than I thought it'd be. It's also more difficult than I anticipated. I quite enjoy it. It seems very much an open world puzzle game. Initially I wanted to ensure the safety of all my Pikmin but at this point I just give them an epic speech before each battle about how not all of them will be coming back. They seem to understand.

I do feel like I'm not terribly good at managing all 3 groups at the same time but it also often doesn't feel necessary unless you want to do a speed run.

I lost the most pikmin when i crossed a bridge too quickly and they all ran into the water instead of on to the bridge. it was so sad

Hah! I lost a bunch at one point because you had to build a bridge from both sides and there was a supporting mound of dirt in the middle. I tossed a bunch of pikmin onto the mound because I had no idea what I was doing and then I ended up building a bridge over them. I effectively buried them alive. I am a cruel god.

Thanks to E3 and this thread I've been sold on the Wii U, and especially its games.

As far as the PS4/ONE being "real" games consoles, well the WiiU is as well. I have no appeal in the former two since I can get the majority of their games on my desktop, and with Nintendo I can't.

The last Nintendo game I played was Super Mario Bros, and it's been 2 decades. Out of all the consoles it's the only one that appeals to me. I don't understand the lack of 3rd party games though. The PS3, and 360 are still getting current games, and the Wii U is a tad faster than those if I recall. So to me it sounds like 3rd party shenanigans there.

I like how some say the Wii U is outdated, it runs most games at 60FPS thanks to absolutely stellar art direction and style. I had a look at Wind Waker recently, and it still looks fun and nice. The new Zelda even more so. Amazing what they can do performance and gameplay wise on "outdated" hardware.
At least their games aren't all "gritty" and brown as well. :)

I'll be picking up a Wii U within a month most likely :D

I'm actually a bit jealous. You've got a lot of excellent games to catch up on, and the Wii U is very backwards compatible (lots of classic games from a bunch of different systems including Sega, plays Wii titles).

I think a lot of games this gen are trying to break away from the "gritty and brown" of last gen, Sunset Overdrive, Infamous, No Man's Sky... all games with high ratings/hype and really colourful too.

Yup, plenty to play. :D

Sadly I'm not one for hype, all these hyped up games end up disappointing. Although I'll be more than happy with a Wii U and its host of amazing games.

I've never played a Zelda game before, and I do like a nice RPG/Adventure.
