But here is the upside, since i did extensive benchmarking on my own with different components, once my new machine comes in I can provide my own real world data to everyone here...

Anyone want to cheer me up and tell me I just got a beastly computer ? :) I'm so nervous it's not going to be any faster than my old 3.2 Harper

It'd be very interesting to see your benchmarks.

According to Apple, the new 2.93Ghz Octo vs. the old 3.2Ghz Octo :

1.3x faster in Cinebench (C4D)

1.2x faster in Photoshop CS4

Now Apple's benchmarks are usually exaggerated, so ... ;)

However, obviously there are no benchmarks yet, so there is still hope .
An optimized, bug free OSX and applications will be ready some time next year, I guess.

I hope to see a 40% + Improvement in performance in the 8core 2.66 over my 3.2 octo.

I don't think you'll see a 40% increase in speed over your previous MP, but depending on the application, it should be slightly faster. You also have the latest GC and better memory utilization. And you're setup for Snow Leopard (hardware wise).

You never know that 40% increase in performance could be very realistic on CPU combined with memory tests but you might also be blown away in real world usage.

Just even daily tasks especially with multitasking might be a very nice surprise as the whole new architecture will be greatly felt.

Well ****.. now I feel like if I don't get a 2.93 , what was the point of returning it? :( Should I get the 2.93 while I still can change my order?

aaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaha.

They haven't even been able to make batch copying work correctly, and I've re-filed that bug every release since 10.0

We should be getting real world benchmark comparisons to the previous MP's next week. I'm waiting to see those before I place my order. But, either way, you have a really great Mac. So the only question is how much do you want to spend?

How??

Excellent Idea.. I think i'm going to do that right now.

So , I DID get to return my Mac Pro and I ended up buying a new 8Core last night, they charged me 10% restocking fee but it's all good, I'm not the whining type. So here's the specs I went with; for my new build

So what is the trick? I bought a new Mac Pro 3.2G that was delivered Monday night (how is that for timing). So I called Apple Tuesday morning and they said "too bad". I've tried calling several times and emailing and they transfer me around several times then I get dropped. It is extremely frustrating. The box has not even been opened yet!

Who did you contact to get the exchange???

Are you in the US?

No.

If you're having problems, ask to speak to a Customer Service representative. If you're calm and reasonable, they can be more helpful than the low level call taker.

Actually I have talked to them three times now. Was pretty calm (atleast I hope I was :) ), explained my situation and even offered to pay a restocking fee. The last time I called I was given an email address to send the entire summary to and see if they can help. Unfortunately I sent that email on Thursday morning and have yet to get a reply (other than the automated acknowledgment).

This is just really disappointing to me as I have been switching to Mac's from Dell and have spent an insane amount with them in the last 9 months, and had planned to order two additional machines next month. I know a lot of people don't like Dell customer service but I never once had a problem that took more than one quick call to my rep to resolve.

I can't believe they're giving you resistance on this. Their policy leaves it possible for you to exchange it. Ask to talk to a higher level rep when you call them again.

Instead of asking, start listening . ;)

There are no benchmarks yet, some people think Nehalem is going to beat sliced bread, some don't - we shall see.
As you don't seem to use the MP for serious work, you don't risk much buying into the latest and unproven technology, do you ?

The 2.93 will not be significantly faster than the 2.66 (octos), so don't sweat it.

What was the reason given for why they couldn't do an exchange for you? I'm assuming that you purchased directly from Apple and not from a 3rd party?

2x 2.66
250gig solid state boot
3tb raid1 storage
16gigs ram
1 optical drive
2x 4870's sync
warranty

I paid only 470 out of pocket for the upgrade, even after the restocking fee

That seems like a ridiculously fast computer... I wish i had those specs

Bought direct from Apple store online. Reason given was because I had upgraded to the 3.2 cpu's - makes the order custom.

Wow, that doesn't sound fair. Only thing I can suggest is to go up the chain of command and see if you can find a sympathetic ear. You can also try walking into your local Apple store and talking to the manager and see if they'd do an exchange. Given the amount of $ involved, I'd exhaust all my options before I gave up.

Could be worse. I received my 8x3.0 CTO machines when 8 cores were optional AFTER the 2008 models were announced. Ordered in mid December 2007, received in mid January 2008.

Stick with it, they should take it back.

OP, what do you need the Pro for? Are you buying this rig fro bragging rights or are you going to use it for something? The reason I ask is because of your concern (2.6 v 2.9). That is about a 12% increase in proc speed. That is going to be bigger than the difference in real world speed (Expect 6-9% increases across the board). You have plenty of memory. You didn't buy the Memory and the three extra hard drives from Apple, did you? If so, be aware, you can save a bundle (almost 75%) at OWC on RAM and quite a bit as well on storage. (Sounds like you bought it all from Apple, since you put up your BTO config.).
So...point of story, it is ridiculous to spend the extra 1600 on proc speed UNLESS you really are using this rig for something serious. These procs haven't even been announced by Intel. They are something special (as I think the last gen of Mac Pro still is on (or near) the top of the heap). Unless it is simply for braggin rights, you would be better off to cancel all the "extras" you ordered and get them from OWC (macsales.com) This would save you quite a bit...perhaps enough to bump that processor to unnecessary heights:)

all of that was covered a while ago... as is apparent from his signature, he runs a design company. he made it clear that apple parts are worth the premium to him for his reasons... actually, for about a week a some time ago, much of the nehalem buying discussion revolved around the cost of the philosophy of top of the line being categorically worth it. doesn't want his tech to be a burden on his business and buying from apple simplifies things. it's how he came into the 3.2 that he is trading in.

Thanks for saving me the time :) close enough..

So, I just changed my order to a 2.93 Octo after some talks with my business partner. We opted for 2 HD4870's for consistency using the cintiq 21" array with ACD 30" x2

I'll let everyone know how it benches against our old 3.2 Octo real world.

Only he doesn't make much sense, his buying decisions and descriptions of his 'business' don't match .

It's a 40k budget for two top-of-the-line workstations one day, then trading in RAM to safe a few bucks for one Mac, and no concerns about compatibilty with the apps he claims to use for work.

Guy's a phony, or bored cause he's out of work due to the recession. ;)
