But anyways, there’s no place you can sell it, because it is locked to your phone account and provider. The unlocked devices will go on sale at a later date.

Yeah, (overlooking the questionable morals of scalping)... upgrading an existing AT&T account was the wrong move here. I just assumed the scalpers all used T Mobile since they don't require you to tie it to an account. But AT&T ties the sim card / device id in the new device to the existing account. The phone is unlocked but as soon as whoever he sells it to turns it on, it will kill the sim card in the existing phone and give that person his AT&T line.

No sir. Verizon are unlocked phones. And he could stand on a street corner in any large town or city and sell it within minutes. Not to mention Craiglist, Ebay, Swappa.

And because he is selling his "extra" phone on launch day, he allowed someone to sleep in and still get a phone on launch day. Any overage charged is the "I didn't want to get up at 3:00 am" tax. And people will pay with pleasure.
He said AT&T, and while Verizon phones aren’t provider-locked, this one is still attached to his account. He obviously wants to sell it without opening the package, and that can’t safely be done without knowing the IMEI so he can cancel it from the account or at least remove the SIM card.

But doesn't it ship tied to that person's account as a way to deter theft during shipment? I thought the buyer would have to open it, activate it, then deactivate it and remove the sim card. At best if you ship it as you get it they'll have the sim card to activate it on your line and kick off whatever phone you have currently.

Scalpers suck but only half the problem. It’s the idiots that pay stupid amounts for the item that are the other half of the problem. If no one bought from scalpers there would be no scalpers.

Because of people like you someone else won't be able to order and get it on day one, will have to wait 6+ weeks, unless they willing to pay extra and get it from you.

Personally i don't give a fart about all this, but Apple should have limit the order to one per card\account To prevent people like you to scam others.
I’m sure you’ve never made profit on something you bought for cheaper in your life.
This is the exact selling strategy millions of people do everyday in the world.

As other have said (geoff5093), preorders online through Apple for AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint iPhone models asked for account verification (i.e. wireless number, billing zip code, and last 4 digits of social) even if paying in full for device. Consequently, the actual iPhone units you will receive will have a verification lock (prompt) when powering on the iPhone (regardless if you first remove the included AT&T sim and shove another one in there).

Basically in order of you to sell it online to a buyer, you have to sell it New Open-box (you have to unbox the iPhone, enter in the wireless number, billing zip code, and last 4 digits of social to remove the verification prompt so any subsequent buyer can activate it). Or, you have to give your buyer this wireless information and hope they don't activate the included AT&T SIM card and deactivate one of your current AT&T phone sims.

You sure about that?
It didn't ask for any addition info for pay full price on att. After my next plan first order. I dont have multiple lines. No change of plan so id assume that its not linked to my actual account until I go through settings.
Somebody should be able to bring this phone into one of the carriers and have them swap it.

The OP has every right to buy an extra iPhone. If the OP is selling it for how much he got it for, he is doing someone who is living internationally a favor. Apple has $200-$300 markups in poorer countries that won't receive them until months later.

Best Buy allowed the Verizon model to be sold without any account information. Is it possible to sell it to someone without opening the box?

Probably?

As a side note: Just know that BestBuy has historically screwed people over and sent out emails like a few days before release saying they won't get the device for a few weeks and offer a $50 gift card as a consolation. It happened most recently with the Apple Watch S3 launch, but happens pretty much without fail anytime BestBuy offers preorders for something with any demand. You might get it 11/3 or might not—That's the gamble with BestBuy. But if you try selling your preorder before BestBuy has literally shipped it out the door, you may end up with a very upset buyer.

Can we get a solid answer on this. I am getting conflicting information from Verizon employees.

If a phone is paid in full, upon its arrival, does it have to be opened, activated, and then deactivated and sim removed prior to sale? One employee says yes, another says all Verizon phones are already unlocked and the phone doesn't even have to be opened.

What about GSM phones?

I recall why I steered clear of buying iPhones from Best Buy last year is that their iPhones were subject to Reseller Flex Policy

"All iP7/7+ Purchased Through Best Buy Will Lock to Whichever Carrier's SIM is Used for Their Initial Activation!!!!!

If you sell these phones unactivated, the buyer needs to activate them with a Verizon SIM card for them to be unlocked. If the buyer activates the phones with any other carrier's SIM card, the phones will follow the locking policy of that carrier.

Best Buy is now selling "SIM-free" iPhones that follow the US Reseller Flex Policy. They are no longer selling the Verizon models at least that is true of the iP7/7+. This explains why the SIM cards are not in the devices!! This has always been true of the iPhones purchased from Target and Walmart, btw.

Do not use any other carrier's SIM card to activate the phones and do not use the SIM card that ships with the phone. I would activate them either with an inactive Verizon postpaid SIM card or on another Verizon line.

EDIT - Best Buy employee confirms any new iPhones, including the iP6s, that they get will be subject to the US Reseller Flex Policy!"

Just open the box and remove the SIM card. Then just put in your description that the box was opened for SIM removal but device has never been powered on.

Carriers are typically only concerned with whether the device is paid off. It might take a visit or a phone call (or two) but if the device is paid off it shouldn’t be much of an issue having the IMEI removed from your account.

The Answer depends on WHERE you preordered the iPhone.
A) If you went through Apple Store (app or website), Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T models required input of wireless account phone line info (even if you Paid in Full). These units will require activation lock removal with the associated phone line billing info.
B) If you reserved for Apple Store pickup, likely same scenario as above because Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T models required input of wireless account phone line info (even if you Paid in Full) before you could reserve for in-store pickup.
C) if you preordered through Best Buy, Walmart, or Target, their iPhones are subject to the Reseller Flex Policy.
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...bject-to-the-us-reseller-flex-policy.2006324/
D) if you preordered through wireless carrier website (i.e. Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T wireless directly), the iPhones likely follow the individual carrier's unlocking Policy.
E) Exceptions to A and B above is T-Mobile iPhone model.

EDIT:
F) Come 11/3/17, if you are among the first to camp outside a physical Apple Store and can buy an iPhone X paid in full, then there should be no activation verification tied with the store bought iPhone X (Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile model). Not sure with Sprint variant though.

Agree..on a side note, tried to send you a message this morning, but it shows that I can't - probably the result of some stupid spat we disagreed with in the past - was just wondering if you got the X and successful on a 11/3 delivery if that's what you wanted.

All was successful here. Thanks for asking. The process seemed much easier all the way around for many. Verizon's site was uploaded ten minutes early too, which shocked me and was a big help.

My plan was to sell the unopened Verizon model iphone once I have it in hand and if it happens to not sell I would return to B.B. within the 14 day window.

Craigslist, meet somewhere public and carry a weapon just in case. Easy $500 profit right now.
I have done it every year with no problems. Once an Apple employee even paid the premium to get it early. Nuts.

Not sure I understand. If I decide to sell the phone I purchased for my wife direct from Apple on an existing Verizon number, do I need to do anything other than remove the SIM?

I mean, as long as the person knows that it can't be unlocked and as long as you make the monthly payments on it, it's whatever. I did that once, but I only had like 2 payments left. Made them with some of the money I sold it for (it was the 6+), and told the guy he could contact AT&T if he wanted it unlocked.

If you're willing to open the iPhone box before selling it (sealed units sell for higher prices), you should: 1) take out the included SIM card, 2) put another carrier SIM in it (non-Verizon just to test the unlock), 3) power on the iPhone and fill out the activation unlock prompts (see pic attachments), 4) verify the non-Verizon carrier signal on the iPhone, 5) erase, reset the iPhone and box it up for sale.
