Google Voice lets you send SMS for free from your desktop and you decide whether the response gets sent back to your iphone or email.
On the iPhone, it's the same and if you do email responses you'll never get charged anything.

I second this, Google Voice is great for sms from the desktop, I use it all of the time.

Note: At this time Google Voice is only available in the U.S.

Shucks... I just wish BluePhoneElite works with iPhones. That would be so much easier.

If you use Google Voice, it arrives on the recipient's phone from your Google Voice number, right? Like, you can't set a custom caller i.d. like in Skype??

still nothing here for an iPhone...

Google Voice by invite only? been waiting months! BluePhoneElite is a perfect solution...only if it worked on an iPhone. It's the only thing I miss from my last non-apple smart phone. This is just awful that you can't do this easily somehow without having to use a service. I just want a simple desktop app.

iOS4 Bluetooth

Does anyone think that now that iOS 4 has been released that maybe apps like BluePhoneElite could pair "as a keyboard" to send SMS?

Found something that does exactly what I've been looking for! I think this is probably the best solution out there right now.

Of course, if anyone can find anything better, please post!

That does look promising! Unfortunate for me, my international credit card just stopped working on iTunes for some inexplicable reason, and I can't get the app to review. But I really want to try this!

Most phone companies allow you to send SMS from your browser from your own phone account.

I have not tested it extensively, but from what I can it works fine. It is, however, a two step process, unlike BluePhoneElite. When you click to send it to the iPhone, the app sets up an SMS to be sent (without leaving the app; an iOS4 feature). But you then must press send manually on the phone.

It's still much more convenient for me to hit send twice than it is to type a message on the iPhone, as I am much quicker on a real keyboard.

It feels like it was put together kind of quickly, but I would still suggest it.

Hi, just bumping the thread to see if there have been any other recent applications which allow this.

I'm a heavy texter and would rather type/send/receive my SMS through a desktop app.

Google voice is awesome, but I believe you're stuck with their return phone number when you send a text.

damn, I'd love to send sms from Mac thru my Nokia n78, like on my windows laptop.
