to all that are looking for a solution to text from your desktop through your phone with chat history etc:
Get Google Voice and set it up to forward to and sync with your phone etc
Download the VoiceMac app to send/receive SMS and view/listen/edit voicemails.
I have all voicemails forwarded to GV voicemail. Its like Visual Voicemail on steroids and VoiceMac makes it that much better.
Why can't we just have this for iPhone and our cell carrier? Kinda ridiculous actually.
I am trying the SMS Sender / SMS Client in a minute
Will post review

MacMedia SMS client gets two thumbs down. The architecture is there to make it something sweet, but it is awkward to use, not quick/easy to select a contact, much less enter a number by hand. The worst part is that it gives a clickable alert window that you sent a text to your phone. Guess what? You have to go to your phone and press send to send it! GOOFY! Was it supposed to make texting easier? You can turn the first alert off, but you must always hit the send button. You do not have a nice chat history of your messaging either.

I HIGHLY recommend Google's Google Voice service with the VoiceMac app (amazingly free). Google Voice as an app on your phone, or the web version, or the VoiceMac app. Everything is always in sync and text messaging is just like using an instant message app with VoiceMac. Its worth getting your friends to text you at a different number if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer and you get a lot of texts :)

This would be an awesome feature if you could use your existing cell phone number. I hate giving people a number for sms and a number to call.

Has anyone found a version that will let me send texts using my cell phones number, but over wifi? My house has bad reception and texting conversations are nearly impossible. I would use the VNC option, but it will still send over cell data rather than wifi.

It's a two step process but it's the best one I could find. You have to send the text to your phone via the client. It does it via push notifications which is pretty cool. It has a heap of other features as well but yeh I did a lot of research and I think this is the best app for those who don't use a jailbroken iPhone.

I need this feature in my life, I have tried the apps and veency.

The Apps are limited by the SDK, having to go to your phone and paste the message and press send completely misses the point.

Veency works well but kills battery life, And requires a jailbreak, which I feel makes the phone slower, and less stable.

Really hope Apple comes up with a solution for this, Or even if there was a jailbreak app that came up with a solution that diddn't kill battery life..

PasteBot Anyone? Not perfect, but works great for me!

http://tapbots.com/software/pastebot/

Simple: After you've installed the Free Mac OSX Sync utility (Mac Only), Open PasteBot ($4) on your iPhone, simply type text in any program/web browser of choice on your Mac, select all, and copy to your clipboard. The text on your clipboard is instantly transferred to your iPhone, then you just tap once on it once and it is in your iPhone clipboard. Then just switch to your texting/SMS app and hit paste and send. YES, I know it's not perfect, but it works flawlessly. Besides, PasteBot is a great place to store info/text you would otherwise have to type a lot and just copy it and paste it. This app is just sick. Great interface, cool sound effects to let you know when something has been received/copied, etc. No, I do not know the developer. Yes it's a pricy app, but it's worth it.

Hope this helps!

Would this Sync utility be iSync which is what iTunes uses or is it a separate piece of software because i have been unable to find it :<

Like many others, I suggest you give Google Voice a try. If you live outside of the US, try to go through a proxy or something to obtain a google voice account. Google it!!

Good Luck.

My favorite is the free iPhone App OneSMS. It is simple to use and you don't need to jailbreak your iPhone. You can write your messages in your browser and send via iphone.

This sucks so bad! I just came from Android and I love my iPhone, but at the same time this kind of functionality is what drives business and casual users alike.

There were at least 5 good apps for Android that performed this function over all the methods previously mentioned; wifi, bluetooth, even USB.

How hard would it be for Apple to put another tab in the iphone window when connected via USB in iTunes?

I've been using GrowlVoice from the Mac App Store for SMS through GV, works great. There is at least one other program with similar function, but this was the first I came across and I've been happy with it. I think it was $2.99 or $3.99 very cheap.

I also have myPhoneDesktop, but I really don't use it that much. It's similar to PasteBot in many respects and similarly priced. I guess if you're looking to SMS via your carrier (as opposed to Google Voice), such a program would be your best bet.

Ya I gotchya on the google voice thing, but I really hesitate to do that since people often don't have my google voice number. Anyways thanks for the reply.

Bluephone elite. Idk if it's still around but my friend used it about a year and a half ago with his slow as dump windows phone. He could send and receive texts thru the thing.

Edit: sorry, I guess bpe died last year

Hey guys.. this was mentioned on page 2 real quick but no one really mentioned it afterwards.

treasonsms seems to be working very good for me.

you must be jailbroken mind you.. (and who isn't really?)

but you basically turn "on" the app (web server) on the iPhone.. and proceed to browse to the phone's local IP address on port 8080.. from any computer's brpwser (on the same local network) and voila! you're presented with a iPhone sms interface.

you can view all your contacts and all the history. works great.

not as good as bluetooth options we had had and loved on our oldschool candy bars.. but all the options are there.. and it's not hacked on like veency.

Hey all, I'm just checking back in to add my two cents. I ended up going with VoiceMac as everyone recommended and it is awesome. There's so much software out there in the world that sometimes you just have to go with the one that has the functionality you're after regardless of little things like the number it was sent from.

I was familiar with Google Voice and using it with SMS and it worked well so I will continue doing what I did, which is mostly use GV sms when at the computer, and my phone when I'm out and about.

For those worried about people having to text you're "new" number, look at it this way, the most effort they have to do is add your new number under your contact name so they at least know who's texting them. A one step process and from that point on it will always come from "you."

Most people will initiate a text to your cell, at which time you can just start replying from the other number. And I think in ALL cases, recipients just hit reply on their phone, and don't think much about they number they're replying to once they have identified who is texting them.

Just given it a whirl, had to change my country code to 44 (in settings on the webpage) as I am in the UK

Cant believe how nicely is looks and works. The webpage loads really quick and it doesn't feel clunky at all.

Think I will buy the dev a beer!

Matt, I did the same thing, sent a test message to myself, and it didn't work. Do you need the country code in front of a phone number in the iphone address book for it to work? i.e. +447530339720 instead of 07530339720?

In the web app, the settings cog thing, then country code as 44, I put my mobile number in the box aswel, not sure if that made any difference.

Used it last night, although one of the messages I sent isnt listed on my actual phone, meaning it probably wasnt sent..

Yeah, I managed to send one text, but couldn't send any others.

Need some clear instructions on what you need in your iphone address book and in the wifisms settings for your own number for it to work in the UK (people in the US don't seem to have problem). Don't want to hassle the dev on twitter as he seems inundated as it is...
