Now I know I'm new here, but I've owned every iphone since they've came out. I also own an iMac, and macbook pro. I do love their products. Now onto the juicy stuff...

I called Apple today to get my complaint documented regarding the reception problem from holding the phone. I spoke to one person and then was put on hold for a long time. I was periodically checked up on. After 38 minutes total, I ended up with a senior tech support representative. I spoke to him for a longggg time and he genuinely started to open up more so then any other apple employee I've ever spoken to.

When I conveyed the fact that I wish the iphone was available with other carriers, he said word for word "I cannot go into detail, but options are coming soon"

When I told him my theory of how Apple probably knew there was intermittent issues with dropping calls when holding the phone and that I believed that's why they came up with this bumper case out of nowhere, he said word for word "I'm not going to talk about that with you, but your right. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head"

So yea, it's only 2 things but I think it goes to show you that Apple did know about this problem. Why would they make their own case, that only covers the antenna? This is the first case they've EVER made AFAIK. And it seems as if they push it on you a bit on apple.com and in the store.

They were probably way too far ahead to turn back by the time they realized and the bumper was a quick fix. Regardless, I did end up with a free black bumper being overnighted, ;)

Take it for what it's worth guys.
Prove it.

I guess since you owned all those apple products is means you must be telling the truth

That band coming out and fixing the antenna problem does seem a little fishy

I'm not lying about anything. I'm not some apple psycho looking for attention, otherwise I'd be on apple forums all day with a million posts under my belt. This is the conversation I had and that's what he said.

Nice signature, newbie. Also against the rules.

Let's use Occam's razor to argue about this.

We have two possibilities.

(1)

- Apple decided to build a case to protect the iPhone since cases are widely popular items on sale (eventA)
- The case coincidentally isolates the hand and the receiver. (This is 100% likely given the previous, since cases are normally made of plastic and happen to cover the edges).

(2)
- Apple finds that their product is defective and then decides to come up with a plastic wrap to mask the problem. eventB

---

I'm more willing to accept that p(eventA) > p(eventB), but who knows. After all, even though I have this 'bug', this is a non-issue when I hold the phone in my usual fashion. I wouldn't have noticed if there hadn't been such a media focus on it, so I couldn't tell you if my previous cell phones have had the problem or not.

OP, I don't want to be cynical, but I feel weary when someone joins and immediately starts advertising to sell an iPhone 4 as a signature on his posts regarding 'juicy news'. I hope that as a gesture of good faith you can remove this signature on this thread, so that we (or at least I) can stop thinking you just really want to sell an iPhone today.

I sold the phone (locally) the day I posted that. I didn't realize it was against the rules and I've since removed it. I wouldn't say that Apple wasn't going to make a case anyway, but I definitely believe they knew of the problem before the phone was released, they knew everyone was going to buy it and then they know they can take care of the problem later. Everyone (including myself) is loyal to the iphone and even if this problem doesn't get resolved by next June, we'll all be up at 5am again placing pre orders. Apple really doesn't have competition IMO.

Don't engage with the fanboys. They will never believe you or anybody who has anything bad to say about apple.

If jobs himself said it, they'd find some way to doubt it.

Think of them like weirdos on the train: never make eye contact.

I hate to be registrationdatist, but when the OP who made up this lie registered in June of 2010 and you are defending him and attacking other people also signed up in June 2010... let us just say neither of you have a lot of credibility and zero history here...

So to put it bluntly nobody cares what you think.

If you were to actually use normal social means to integrate yourself into a long standing community you might have a better go at it, instead just showing up and insulting people... it is bad form.

pretty sure you forgot CONFIRMED in your thread title.

People the bumper was not created to solve reception issues and an apple employee is not going to risk his job by admitting a new carrier is coming on a call that is being recorded by :apple:

Well Senior techs might not be monitored since they are bit higher up than your normal answer the phone guy.

I work with glass everyday, double glazing installer.

Looking at pictures of iphones with the screen smashed it looks to me like its been through some sort of tempering and toughening proccess, toughened glass units are very easy to smash into thousands of tiny squares with the lightest tap on an edge, exactly where the iphone 4 would be most vulnerable in a drop, hence why Apple came up with a surround to cover up that portion of the phone, probably not to cover up the metal.

As a guy that's roommates with a tier 2 tech rep for apple--they get told nothing. They know what you and I know, that's it.

The tier 1 reps also don't get told anything either, so whatever you get from them is simply speculation.

I've been told the same thing by my friend who works at an Apple store. They're just hourly employees. They aren't told what Steve is thinking.

Having said that, I think the LOGIC of the thread starter makes sense ... that the bumper (it's not called a case; it's called a "bumper") appears to be a solution to a problem. A solution that came out BEFORE the phone was released to the public. .... so, will Apple be making a CLEAR, transparent bumper?

an apple employee is not going to risk his job by admitting a new carrier is coming on a call that is being recorded by :apple:

Maybe. We also know that these "senior" tech people have been saying anything to shut people up since launch.

CONFIRMED.

I just called and spoke to a level 1 junior tech rep and she transfered me to a level 2 junior tech rep, who transfered me to a level III junior tech rep, who I asked to transfer me to a "Senior" tech rep. She started laughing and I heard her tell the kid next to her "this person wants to talk to a senior tech rep," and then they both started laughing. She says "just a moment." She puts me on hold for 38 minutes, and then someone picks up. In the voice of that person I heard laughing in the background earlier, I hear "Hello. This is Senior tech rep. How may I help you." I hear snickering in the background. I say "Are you really a Senior tech rep," and trying not to laugh, the person says "Yeah." I hear a bunch of laughing in the background. Then the person I'm talking to starts laughing. Then they come clean and tell me they are all just tech reps and there is no junior and senior. She then offers to send me a free pony if I agree to hangup.

Not that anyone completely cares..but to at least set the record straight....
here is the flowchart for call flow inside Iphone Tech Support..
1) Tier 1
2) Tier 2 (Senior Advisor)
3) Consumer Relations (Apple Internal)
4) Engineering (Apple Internal)

The nature of the issue decides if a call goes to 3 or 4...And 4 will not take a call that I know of...3 rarely does..Everything is handled by Tier 2 reps who have far more discretion and tools available to them than a Tier 1 rep..

There of course are other departments to escalate (Direct Dispatch, Agreement Admin, Itunes Store, etc..) to depending on the issue..but for general tech issues what you see above is the normal flow

FYI...A doc was released today into ILOG with positioning statements for the reception issue...From memory (obviously I do not post from work) they are
Quit holding it that way
All phones do it
Iphone 4 has better reception than 3G or 3GS..

Wish I were kidding about that....

don't think so. just held my iphone with my left hand and it had all the bars full then. dropped two of them down to three now...

fyi.. i have a bumper on it yes

A great example is this: I talk to you folks all day long and troubleshoot your issues with the Iphone 4. Have I ever seen one? NO....Have I ever operated one? NO...I use SGT (self guided training) materials to learn as much as I can and then hope to God I don't sound stupid when I talk with people who actually own the product...BTW...I haven't seen iOS 4.0 in action either.....meh

Aw. The very possibility of this makes me sad. If I were an Apple employee, I would at least want to see one.

It would be nice wouldn't it? LMFAO...In the meantime I get by with training materials, online simulators, and Google...To be honest I get more out of the forums online than I do out of Apple's KBase....

Yeah I have thought that too ever since I heard about this problem. However there is one voice in my head that won't stop shouting and that is: If they really wanted to push the case that hard to fix a design fault the. They would lower the price. It only costs like 20 cents to make.
I know this is apple so the may just be being as greedy as usual, but would they really risk all the complaints etc when they could still be making a decent profit at a lower price?

Try plugging a flash drive in at your job and see what happens, lol
