Agreed. Usually you’ll get more money by selling it. $400 for an iPhone X is okay but question is what model and storage amount? I sold my Qualcomm 256 GB iPhone X for $550 the other day. It is in mint condition. Battery health is at 97%. 16 months old, to be exact.

Mine was unlocked 64gb. Apple gives you $400 for it.

I was set to do mail in trade in but, hearing so many horror stories I went to an Apple store and asked if they could just credit my cc and they said they could. The credit showed up the next day. Very happy I went that route. When the trade in box arrived in the mail the next day it was smashed on one corner. I imagine my iPhone in there if that happened in route to the receiver.

Had zero issue with two prior Apple trade-ins but I always take pictures to show iCloud unlocked operation and physical condition. Also, always included a note to mention photos are available to deter any funny business.
I called Apple support on taking my phones in to gain credit (after I received my phones through shipment to my house). He said yes, but I would get it in the form of Apple Credit and not able to apply to phone purchase.

I told him that is crazy, but he explained it is to keep store purchases and online purchases separated.....sounds like their problem, not ours.

As you wrote, I plan to photograph both 10 XS Max's and take a video showing the condition and operation of both phones. Like you, I will certainly put a sheet of paper stating I have full documentation of condition when placed in their box and shipped by their method.

I have to trust the process works and works well, just be prepared if an issue arises.

Taking photos of your old phone doesn't really help. It could be a photo of another phone for all they know. It could be an old photo of your phone and the time stamp faked. Not hard to do.

Sheesh. Do you guys not watch 70’s police shows?

(1) turn on screen
(2) go to settings | general
(3) scroll to serial number
(4) buy today’s newspaper
(5) put phone next to newspaper so date is showing
(6) take photo

That would be the smart thing to do.

Just take your own photos. I do.

That doesn’t really help. Nothing saying something didn’t happen after you took those photos and then sent the device off. That is unless you’re going to film the entire process without any cuts from start to finish every time you want to send a phone back to Apple, of course.

Next time sell it yourself on Swappa. Taking pictures of it before you send it may help, but ultimately it doesn't prove anything. How hard is it to take pictures of a pristine phone and then put a busted one in the box.

I make a video of the phone’s condition, power it on after showing all sides and go show the IMEI. I do the factory reset at the end.

Can the argue that I dropped a phone after the video, after somehow not dropping it in years of use? Sure but good luck with that. I even video the phone going into the box.

That's the thing. This was through Apple. Apple uses a third party contractor for it's trade in program.
It’s an Apple partner. the store offer you less for a reason.
the specialist evaluates it checking for a few things. The phones are sent off and if the store evaluation is incorrect the difference is absorbed by Apple.
i feel for the OP because there is a risk the evaluation may come bag slightly lower but zero. That’s wrong.

OP, how long did it take them to give you a final determination? Mine is being inspected right now.

I haven’t had any issues last year when I sent my watch for trade in. Got what I was quoted pretty quickly. Now I know BrightStar (the company apple uses that gives out gift cards) is sketchy. I traded in my S0 for
$50 but they said it won’t turn on. They sent it back to me and I turned it on and Sent photos to them and it still didn’t do anything.

Awful story - I hope it works out in the end.

I have never used any trade in service before as Ive never trusted them - too many horror stories. However, this year I took a chance with MusicMagpie as the value they gave for my XS Max was really good; that and the AppleCare refund from Apple, as well as keeping all the accessories too - so got just a little under what I would have achieved from a private sale. Hence I thought I would save myself the hassle this year and sent it in.
I then read more horror stories......it was a long weekend wait I can tell you!!

Checked the tracking daily to ensure it reached them OK. Then they took 2 days to inspect the item, but fortunately I heard nothing and the money was in my account the next day.

Its a gamble with these trade in's a lot of the time!

That’s why I do it in store. I once traded in one that has a crack on the lower right corner but Touch ID still worked so the associate approved the trade in for full value.

I was wondering this myself. I received my new phone on launch day and just received my trade-in kit/box this past Tuesday. I sent my X out immediately. They just received it yesterday and are inspecting it now. Curious how the OP already got this information 2 days ago? It's almost logistically impossible.

Mine was also in "mint" condition. I chose the trade in path this year as I really didn't want the hassle of selling my phone through Craig's List and such. I hope this trade goes as planned or else I'm calling this a scam. This is the first time I'm hearing any issues with the Apple trade-ins.

Yep, that’s what I thought too. Even in the prompt where it says your device is being inspected that it takes up to 3 business days for them to make a decision. And everyone who got launch Day iPhones didn’t get their boxes sent out till the day before launch day.

I used buybackworld. Got quite a bit more than $600 than Apple was offering for my Xs Max. Your phone has to be in pretty bad shape for them not to give you what they initially offer. Never had them email me and offer less after they received the phone.

I was over cautious sending in my iphone 7. I literally took pics at every step. I wrapped the phone with bubble wrap but firstly ensuring front and back had cardboard protecting both screen and camera lens. It must have been 10 times its size when I boxed it up. No way could they claim I damaged it or even it getting damaged in transit..

That thing couldve dropped through the clouds to the floor and survived.

Upon opening my new phone I got my go pro and recorded it for my own piece of mind.

I talked to the rep online through support and she said you will not get the gift card when you trade in the phone! I am planning to go to store today should i just ask them to credit my cc?

Update: They sent me the phone back, and it’s still in mint condition. The email they sent me said there were buttons missing and value was zero, and then it gave an option to accept the new value, which was zero, Or return the phone. Obviously I chose to return that phone. I wonder how many others they do this to or if it was just a fluke. Now I’m back to square one, with a mint condition iPhone X. Should I just go to the Apple store to trade it in this time?

It’s a sign saying wait another year for the next iPhone

Verizon just screwed me out of $550 on trade-ins so I'll be returning 4 phones. They gave $300x2 for iPhone 6's. I entered IMEI and all that, and they said "carrier" so I entered AT&T since that's where I was porting from.

They are A1549's so they are claiming they were expecting the gimped GSM versions b/c I selected AT&T. They received the full featured versions b/c these are the unlocked CDMA versions. IE they received a better version than they were expecting so they are knocking $600 down to $50 and are not returning my devices to me.

My run as a Verizon customer lasted less than 2 weeks.
