Slow and steady imho.

I was already 1/3 of the challenge a few days ago which is crazy considering the challenge was 7.5-7.8 I forget, miles per day and normally I’m more 4-6 miles with 6 stretching it.

I realize it’s trying to get you to move more, do more, but you don’t necessarily need to meet it always and it’s worse for you if you exceed constantly because they’re gonna bump it up hella quick.

so I didn’t commute to work today. Was too frigging tired. Some folks might do 7 miles easily a day but I’m not a gym rat. Not even a gym hamster. The only time I’ve ever signed up for a gym membership was when my friend was going through a particularly painful breakup and wanted to go to the gym to work out and needed a buddy.

didn’t commute to work on Wednesday either so my numbers are going to be lower this week. Still higher than usual because I’ve been going a bit harder than usual.

You don’t need to go to the gym or work to rack up the miles. I do about 4 miles of running in the morning. 2-3 mile walk at lunchtime. Then whatever in the evening. This time last year I was doing just the lunchtime walks. Buying the AW was the perfect motivation for me.

Right, exactly my point. I rack up miles without going to the gym or with dedicated working out times during the week. Weekends I can arrange in a hike or walk.

however if I’m just working/walking (took a lunch walk with a colleague) like yesterday with half of a commute walk (because I took Uber in the morning) I only got 5 miles in. Most of my time @ work is spent sitting at a desk looking at data or meeting with clients via web or in person.

It’s difficult for me to break what my usual average is unless I make an effort, and for those who do make a point of doing so eg run a few miles minimum in the morning or take lunch walks consistently (I’m lucky to have time for lunch) then they’re similar to a gym rat who has time to dedicate and the numbers will probably be higher for you on the watch (where it gets you to try and go above what you normally do)

which is my whole point.

you don’t need to always meet or beat it, especially if you aggressively do so because the watch is smart but not that smart, it’s just going to keep pushing you crazy high numbers until you reach a breaking point and then it may just no longer be fun much less feasible which defeats the whole point of the challenges to begin with.

The point of the challenge is twofold in my opinion:
  1. For those who are not active it provides some idea and encouragement to get something done.
  2. For those who are active it provides some extra encouragement but with the caveat that it does not necessarily mean anything.
The first point is pretty self explanatory. A couch potato (= former me) needs to do something, a walk at the park, ten jumping jacks, a couple of laps at the pool. Anything really will work as the goal is to improve, albeit slightly, without too much planning. One of the main issues for non-active people is finding ideas on what to do. Some are afraid of the gym, some just don't like doing certain things. With the challenge it is possible to find new ideas on simple things to do.

For those who are active (= me at this stage of my life), the Challenges are great but if, and only if, they meet the goals and regimen that is pre-planned. A couple of months ago I got a running challenge, something like x amount of miles in a month: it doesn't meet my goal, so I just let it go. I am not going to switch to extreme running cardio only because the watch tells it to me. However, other challenges (workout minutes, calories burned etc) meet my goal. I don't give it too much importance, but I noticed that if I am close to the challenge's goal, I tend to do that little extra work that is required to gain that ethereal award. In my opinion, that's the true strength of the monthly challenge. I must say that when it's particularly hard AND when it meets my personal goals, I allow myself a small present (maybe a new t-shirt for the gym or something) as a physical reward. Small things, but they go a long way in helping the motivation during harder days.

Ok, not sure how you’re reading my reply other as what you’ve written is similar sentiments but slight tweaks.

but basically the gist of it is (my reply) the challenge doesn’t need to be exceed every time. If you hit the mark, great, if you don’t, it’s not the end of the world.

and actually it shouldn’t be exceed always bc at some point it becomes impossible.

not with everything else in life like work and sleep besides social gatherings and such.

so I’m not sure why you’re quoting unless to just tell me your opinion? That’s not that different from what you quoted?

Fwiw I’ve not had a consistent month until about 4 months ago. Whether that’s due to my not always wearing the watch, or due to just the fact that I walk often but never made a point to but now do, basically like you I was 1 then 2.

And I was only speaking up after reading replies where people commented on the difficulty. Was meant to say hey, don’t be so hard on yourself.

apparently struck a cord with some in another direction that was not the intention at all. Oh well. Says more about imho, then anything.

No worries, I was just elaborating. I didn’t mean any disagreement with you.

Nope. I’ve been robbed!
It’ll show up, did you upgrade to watchOS 8 yet? That could cause some delays… and I have also noticed that certain badges randomly show or don’t… I’m not sure if these badges are processed and awarded local (meaning watch/phone) or need some iCloud sync, and iCloud is probably rather busy right now…

Still on the one before. I just let it auto update overnight when it’s ready. I’m not going to worry about it too much.
