It’s because you can have airplane mode on and still Bluetooth on. It’s an option that the phone allows you to do, and that’s what it happened to me.

This way, the training was getting GPS information from the iPhone even with the airplane mode on.

Waiting to run soon to do some more tests!

Loaded Apple Maps and Footpath in Aeroplane mode. Neither find my poisition. Also, in aeroplane mode and Bluetooth turned itself off, and the Watch has the red "no contact with phone" icon on it.

You started the thread saying the GPS was terrible (and I agree!), but I've given you some things to try which flipped my opinion on it. I went from getting rid of the Watch to being delighted by it. Whether you believe them or not, give them a try. They are almost certainly fixes for your problem.

I don't know about S4, but I have S3 on left wrist and crown pointing to the right. For me GPS is almost spot on. It is a little inprecise when I take turns (a little too smooth) but other than that it's ok. A couple times in the past two years of use I had an issue that my entire track was shifted about 100 meters north. No idea why, just some bug I guess.

However I must say GPS accuracy is highly dependant on weather. When it's rainy (a lot of clouds) it tends to lose signal from time to time and workout app is dumb enough not to guess my route (or even measure distance between points in straight line) and simply doesn't count my running when losing signal as if I teleported.
