Uh, yea tell that everybody who reads books on on their iPads, Kindle Fire, iPhones, iMacs, Macbook Pros, Kindle Fire HDs, Nexus 7s, etc etc etc.

They're reading articles and e-magazines. Not thousand page novels.

The iPad Mini is coming...

Zombies aren't great bread winners. I think Apple targets more to Sheep.
They just don't get the return business that they rely on with Zombies.
Sheep, on the other hand, can be fleeced over and over.

No, that is incorrect, now I love apple products- BUT, the reality distortion field is slowly fading, this is a blatant attempt to screw people, next year there will be an ipad mini 2 with an A6 chip and retina display.....they know what they are doing

How are they trying to screw people? Don't like the resolution or don't agree with the pricing? Don't buy it. An iPad is not a mandatory item to have in your house like a smoke detector.

There will be business studies written on Apple for years.

Where they used to be about innovation and pushing the envelope, their sole driving goal is absolutely bleeding their loyal customer base out of every single penny they can.

Whether it's cutting release cycles to months instead of years, creating arbitrary adapter updates to boost profit margins, recyling old internals to 'create' a new product they have it all covered.

As someone posted, there is no doubt they already have the prototype built and keynote written for the March release of the iPad mini 2 (with Retina!) for only $329. They could've released it today, but why not double dip and get millions of sales now and more in March.

No shame in that, every business is out there to make money.[

What makes Apple unique is they have a customer fanbase who blindly lines up and supports them tooth and nail even when every move these days is a lazy cash grab. They'll happily pay a premium for any product they put out there, and be quick to insult anybody else who won't do the same. (The usual arguments - 'they are too cheap', they don't appreciate quality products, brand X's product is junk.)

It'll be interesting to see how long that lasts. Love him or hate him, the personality of Steve Jobs made the perception of Apple different than other companies.

But seeing Tim Cook up there shaking the money tree with an overpriced iPad 2 jr did nothing for me.

I can totally understand this, for you this product works, but the first person I see break out an ipad mini with their iphone 5 while they surf on their macbook in starbucks will get slapped in the face

iPhone 5 - Mifi device
iPad Mini - PDF technical manuals with iPhone 5 for iCloud connectivity to access PDFs
Macbook - Workhorse using iPad Mini for reference and iPhone 5 for VPN connectivity to work

What's the issue?

They're reading articles and e-magazines. Not thousand page novels.

Since when does the length of a book factor into the reader experience? I read long novels, I just don't read them in a single sitting - this is true whether I read on my Kindle, iPad or printed book. I do the bulk of my reading on my iPad though, generally 1-2 hours at a sitting, so be it 10-10 page articles or 100-200 pages of a book the experience is consistent.

We all get that you think it's a sub-par experience but that does not result in objective fact.

It's not for Apple customers.

This may not be for Apple customers. (Well maybe a few, like me.)

It's for the wealthiest of the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 customers, who want something slightly better (bigger display in a lighter and thinner device, plus maybe LTE). Thus, Apple will skim some of the most profitable customers away from Amazon and Google.

A few Apple customer who already have an iPad 1 or 2, but really wanted something a bit lighter, will likely trade up (down), with the slightly lower price helping with the trade differential (depending on the resale value of their 1 or 2).

I have a Kindle Fire, and find it to be a nicer size for reading books, but the software and UI is junk, compared to my iPad.

A lot of that is the customer's fault. Namely, the fanboys and girls who can't resist buying Apple products even if they feel or know it's not worth their value.

Have you seen the the Shen Zen A-Pad 378X it blows this thing away and it has two slim slots, an SD card, a removable battery, and it Widgets! Did you hear me Widgets!!!!!!!!!

ok i haven't really seen the above, i thought i would just get it out of the way

Lets really be honest here, this ipad mini is ridiculous. It has outdated ipad 2 internals, a smaller NON-RETINA display, and they have the nerve to charge 329 dollars for this thing??? I guess I can see the appeal of the smaller form factor to do some light browsing, keep kids entertained with some angry birds, some email- with a price of around 200 dollars I believe that would be a winner, but apple pretty much said "screw it, apple fans will buy it". and the price for a wifi and cell mode!!!!! Dont get me started on that.......

Completely Agree. I was on the fence between a 32gb iPad Mini and the new 32gb Nexus 7. 200 dollar price difference? Apple is living in a fog.

Apple is right now at one point in their history where anything they create with an apple logo on its back will sell.

This didnt happen 10-15-20 years ago, so its logical they want to benefit from it. If you knew that making a camera or a tv with you apple logo in its back could sell millions despite being a 5 megapixel camera or a black and white tv ypu would do so.

Its not apples fault there are millions of uneducated customers who think that because its apple it must be high-end. Well no, ladies and gentleman, there are way better products for much less money.

These people just dont care about learning specs and comparing products. Last year I decided to buy my first NAS, and I spent over a month looking at many models from different companies. I researched a LOT, cause at that time I didnt know how a NAS worked, but in a month I learned everything and made a great choice quality/price.

Would 90% of the general consumer population do the same? No. If they see it has an apple logo on its back immediately they think its better than the competition.

Are they zombies? Maybe. Just like the millions of people who have sold their ipad 3 to buy the 4....................................... that I dont understand. Apple is doing great in making many of their customers zombies. This means they are doing a good job.

Apple could pull something out of the littler box and put a Apple logo on it and they would be camping outside the day before they started selling it.:p

I readily admit to being a zombie. I buy every product refresh because Apple makes it so easy as their products keep their value. I'm on an iPad 3, but still looking to sell and get two minis (one for me and one for my wife) as I'll break even cost wise. Then I'll get the retina mini. And probably the refresh after that. I know it's unhealthy but I'll probably do it anyway. Braiiiiins.
