It's probably more the context. This isn't a watch forum where people routinely talk about spending 5 figures on a watch. While I suspected the $10,000 price estimate was right, had it come in at $5,000 I'd have been tempted. I have better things to do with $10,000 but there are investment bankers out there who get $250,000 bonuses in a good year, which the OP might very well be. There are also nouveau riche types in places like China. I think that the yellow gold with rose leather band Edition is geared to the Chinese market.
Will Apple sell these in the numbers they are expecting? Who knows for sure, but I don't see what's wrong with Apple trying. After all, it's very common in the watch industry to sell a high end halo watch in 18kt gold and a similar style for substantially less. Look at Burberry's web site.

No they don't. You know why? Because they don't wear them all the time. Walk around a Walmart with a $10,000 watch and see if you don't jacked in the parking lot.
thats a real watch that will last. not a piece of gold with electronics inside that will be a paperweight in 5 years.

You're wrong about high end sports cars. Actually there are very active Lambo and Ferrari forums. Many of these guys, while wealthy are also car guys. I'll be surprised if many watch guys who participate in high end watch forums will have much interest in Apple's Edition however. No one should seriously look at any Apple watch as a treasured investment to pass on to your children.

In all seriousness, I really do want to buy this watch for my girl. She deserves it. But I do realize there are better things to drop 17K a on.
Like a nice diamond or something. That'll get her more excited and me luckier than ever haha.
If I bought her this watch, I'm afraid she won't even value it because she'll think it was like 500 at most.

the high end car forums such as ferrari/lambo/high end porsches (carrera gt, gt2/gt3/gt3rs/lexus lfa are wastlands.
for high end performance aka supra/gtr/evo/sti/z06. those are active. now those guys who are fast do spend a whole lot of money for being fast. 1000+hp supras/gtrs etc. but its a different type of person.
Exactly. Find me a Ferrari forum with the kind of traffic you'll find on a Mustang forum and I'll concede, but from what I've seen in all my years being a car guy on all kinds of car forums, the high end ones are indeed wastelands with little traffic where days can pass without replies.

Agreed. Apple priced this way too high.
It's only 'worth' between $1000 and $2000. Maybe the band makes it 'worth' $3000 - but the markup is not right at all.
But who am I to understand? I originally thought that Apple opening it's own stores was ludicrous. But it's worked very well for them, and they wouldn't be in the position they are right now without them
