Exactly. Find me a Ferrari forum with the kind of traffic you'll find on a Mustang forum and I'll concede, but from what I've seen in all my years being a car guy on all kinds of car forums, the high end ones are indeed wastelands with little traffic where days can pass without replies.

they have the money to buy whatever. but they just buy it because they can. they're not car people, they're rich people.

now you have the guy who buys a viper and spends 20grand in a tt kit. or the guy with the cobra who puts in 10 grand. they have the money, but thats what they enjoy. its 2 different worlds. the rich guy in the ferrari wants to look cool going out with his wife, the other guy with the gtr with 1000hp will make you look stupid slow going down the street/highway. meanwhile they might of spent the same amount in the end.

the high end car forums such as ferrari/lambo/high end porsches (carrera gt, gt2/gt3/gt3rs/lexus lfa are wastlands.

for high end performance aka supra/gtr/evo/sti/z06. those are active. now those guys who are fast do spend a whole lot of money for being fast. 1000+hp supras/gtrs etc. but its a different type of person.
I post on quite active Porsche forums!

You don't have to have a Ferrari to be able to afford an iwatch though.

I drive a Mercedes ML. It's nice, but nothing extravagant.

You can't really spend 10K on a watch from income. Even if you're make 150k a year, after taxes it'll be a big expense.

This is the kind of thing upper middle class people have to buy from buying a good stock, etc.

I bought Apple Stock low 90s after the split and swore to sell at a 100.

I'm still holding though :D

Not car forums but I belong to a purse/jewelry forum and they are very active. For purses that cost a minimum of $10k, you see hundreds of posts per day. Purses in the $3k+ range are even more active. Still those people would consider a $10k purse a much better investment than an apple watch :)

No. Take it from a WIS, the Apple Edition is an absolute waste of money in every way imaginable. Not only is the watch going to depreciate in value (in the same way an iPhone would), but it won't be as functional with software updates as time goes on also. Worse, melted down, the Apple Watch Edition isn't worth nearly as much in materials as Apple would have you pay for. If you want to spend 10-17k on something nice for your girlfriend, and you insist on a watch, then I'd suggest a Rolex/Patek/TH or something similar.

I wear a watch that I purchased 3 years ago for 10k and now it's worth 12-13k. That is absolutely not going to happen with Apple's watch.

Let me also add that the Apple Watch is ugly. Everything that one could appreciate about a quality timepiece, the Apple Watch is missing. If you're looking to buy your girlfriend something expensive so she knows it's expensive, at least get her something she'll care about.

My girlfriends birthday is coming up. I was thinking the iwatch edition would be perfect for her. Expensive, yes, but the stock market is doing well so I don't see why not.

Has anyone else ordered it yet? How long are shipping times?

OP - that is what i am planning on - the problem is to figure out the band.

I am hiring people to wait on line because I am not sure what the availability will be at the launch or if it is one watch per customer. I am probably also going to wait for the fun of it. I met a lot of fun people during the 6s wait. Odd hobby of mine.

.

You seemed to be confused.

The OP was looking to buy a gift, not an investment. You could have spent the 10k you spent on your watch and bought Apple stock and have $15k today. So your watch as an investment was awful.

ok then buy me a sport one for fun since you have so much money to throw around

I didn't buy my watch as an investment, I was simply pointing out that my watch appreciates in value, whereas an Apple Edition will not.

But for what it's worth, I purchased my watch after tripling my money on a very large investment. I'm ahead by a large margin.

$10k goes a long way towards an engagement ring. ;)

In good faith I could not recommend somebody gifting an Edition Watch unless they are in the top 1%. It'll become obsolete and depreciate quickly. Frankly a stainless steel model with a leather band would go over just as well if not better.

The only time I may consider buying such an expensive gift for my girlfriend's birthday is when she turns 100.

Otherwise Sport will do just fine.

Lucky lady!

It's not order-able yet, unfortunately. Pre-orders will start 10 April.

I know people who spend that kind of money on watches based off of that kind of income. It is a big expense, but if your income is $150k, let's say $110k after taxes (depending on state). You could have living expenses of maybe $3k/month, meaning over $70k disposable income annually. $10k is a big purchase but totally doable. I've seen it.

This is not known. Price is a function of supply and demand. If demand outstrips supply, street prices will rise. Later in the game, first-edition models of seminal products are often worth quite the fortune. I wish I had a mint Apple I...

On the other hand, used premium watches (or secondhand jewelry of most any sort) do depreciate.

But who cares. If you can afford the Edition and want its functionality, go for it. It'll be something you or your significant other can enjoy for a good long time.

Coming from a guy who own several high end watches, do not spend this amount of money on an electronic, it will be obsolete in a year or two. For about $12-14k you could get her a Rolex Daytona that will last forever(if serviced properly) and it is much prettier than the Apple Watch.

And she'd probably die during the return policy. Well played!! :p

i think females will appreciate a nice NON apple watch. this is coming from a person that owns a couple of lux watches along w/ gf that also likes lux watches. my gf would slap me if i ever spent that much on an electronic watch.

ok then buy me a sport one for fun since you have so much money to throw around

that is a strange statement.
why would I spend money on a stranger?
Do you think you are entitled to my money and my generosity?

So what? That is completely irrelevant.

The OP is looking to buy a gift, not make an investment.
Just like you claim to have bought your watch.
Then you point out that it isn't a good investment.
So what?

Your point is just as relevant as claiming that the watch will weigh less than a duck, so he should buy a duck instead (pound/dollar spent ratio is better). He isn't buying the watch for that reason.

----------

it will be obsolete in a year or two. For about $12-14k you could get her a Rolex Daytona that will last forever

Oh no, not this silly argument again.
What exactly do you mean that it will be obsolete?
It will still work in a year.
Newer watches will have different functionality.
But the Apple watch will already have a lot more functionality than a Rolex Daytona, so by that definition of "obsolete" the "old person dentist" Rolex is already obsolete - or at least will be when the Apple watch comes out.

I would like to have the 18 k yellow gold Apple watch, but $10k is very very very overpriced. When I graduated from college, I wanted an heirloom that I could pass on when I finally have children one day. So I chose the Rolex Submariner. Got it for around $4,500 and it has only changed very slightly since 2006 and it's already over $8k (if you were to buy it today). It's a classic.

I can't see the apple edition being a classic in the future. I love the apple watch, I think it's awesome, and I think Apple should have made the gold version more affordable.

If I could buy my girl a watch for $10k, I would buy her a watch she could own forever. I just don't see the electronics and style holding up for more than a few years, especially with all these amazing innovations in technology.

I ride a small 18 year-old Honda motorcycle. It's nice, but nothing extravagant…..

Some people are classy when discussing their wealth. Then there are other people.

Plebs who got lucky.
