I don't know what the state laws are in other states but here in California you CAN get a ticket for texting and driving at the same time. Fine is usually 150-200 dollars. That ALONE is a good reason for me to have Siri to reply and read my messages while I drive.

I think people need to remember that Siri doesn't promise complete "hands free" operation. You still need to activate it and use the UI to confirm actions. Does it save time typing (especially if you're dictating something long) - yes. But for short task, etc - it's not really going to save all that much time. And if you're driving - you'll still need to pay attention to the screen if you don't have a bluetooth headset on your ear which you can tap.

You can verbally confirm actions, or use the button. Having to activate the feature by pressing a button is true and a pain... It would be nice if it could be verbally activated once a session was started.

Are you asking this Siri-ously?

I can remember when people "looked like jerks" just by using a mobile phone.

You'd better ask Siri on Friday....

That's assuming that Siri can make it through immigration by then.

TSA: Do you have anything to declare?
Siri: Here is today's weather in Senchen..

TSA: You're really starting to tick me off!!
Siri: I bet you say that to all the phones.

-whats the point of swiping down when I can just look out the window?

Thats what Im thinking. Faster and more accurate than siri or a weather app.

Depending on where you live, the weather can easily change from nice and sunny to torrential downpour within the day- and that's not easily told by looking out the window when it's practically still dark out in the morning.

Not to mention, "Siri, what's the weather like in (insert city that you don't live in) today?" is much easier than having to type it in. Extremely useful when traveling or checking in on family.

I am not excited about it because it isn't something I would use. I ride the bus or ride a bicycle. I am not talking to "myself" on the bus and I am not distracting myself by wearing headphones riding my bicycle in the city.

I just wouldn't use it, it isn't going to kill me to open an app.

That's true...but you do know it works with bluetooth headsets as well as the headphones with mic's as well.

And again, it's not that there isn't an alternative, there is, but this is the next step. Another example is why get a microwave oven when you already have an oven. Yes, there are alternatives, but this is some cool stuff. It's definitely not for everyone but this is my Star Trek coming to reality. :D

It looks nice. But the time it takes to say "is it raining" you can just swipe down from the top and see it?

If someone is disabled it dramatically increases access that most of us take for granted. :)

That would still be talking to "myself" on the bus or wearing headphones and being distracted while riding my bicycle in the city.

I am glad it is great for you but in a way for me it is an invasion of my personal space to use it. I don't want to talk to people much less have to interact with my phone like it is a freaking person.

So yeah, I am anti-social but I ain't the only one.

You should ask Siri to find you help for that.

And that's completely understandable..it's whats convenient for use and ultimately what it comes down to. For some other people it's going to be convenient to have Siri compose a note or text for you. It's not that you can't open up the notes app or open up the sms app and type the message it's just more covenant to go the Siri route.

But it is cool for some people...not for everyone which is fine...but just speaking for myself I think it's going to be really awesome!!

Sad part is it seems to be the main selling point of the new iPhone.

I haven't really gotten that impression from Apple's advertising or people's responses. Increased performance (some impressive benchmarks), improved camera, increased storage, etc have all been major selling points depending on who you talk to. That said, it's definitely an exciting new feature and one that's been well-publicized.

Question: were you using Siri back when it first came out?

It seems to me that a lot of people ignored Siri or any AI until Apple bought and used it.

EXACTLY - not to mention Vlingo, dragon's apps and also Google Go!

I was an early adopter of Siri. And I used it as a novelty. Same with the other voice apps.

I, personally - don't like to speak my emails or texts because most of the time I am in a business environment and that would just not be appropriate.

Progress is the point. Will it work? Will it really be useful? I don't know.

I do remember buying the first personal computer at my company (yeah, I'm that old). I showed a couple of our accounting/finance guys Visicalc. They thought it was stupid and told me that they already had systems for all that and that nobody would use it. Initially, they were right. It just took some time and improvement and trials and failures and some successes. Some things worked and some didn't.

So, will Siri be a success? I don't know, but I'll try it out and see if it really is useful. Maybe it's the next iPad or maybe it's the next Newton. I've tried both. iPad works for me. Newton, not so much...but it led to better things.

BTW, not looking forward to the many inappropriate uses and venues, but they should make for good comedy material...

I have used all 3 of those for work purposes, doesn't even come close to Siri.
