Question: were you using Siri back when it first came out?

It seems to me that a lot of people ignored Siri or any AI until Apple bought and used it.

But that's because it wasn't integrated so you had to go into an app in order to use it. I have the same issue with foursquare where I'll use it for a couple days but get tired of having to open the lock screen, find the four square app and then check in.

Siri is baked in so I don't even have to pull my phone out of my pocket if I have headphones and do stuff. Imagine how much more check in apps would be used if you could check in with Siri when you walk into some place.

Again, convenience is key.

I will never use it. Period.

It looks nice. But the time it takes to say "is it raining" you can just swipe down from the top and see it?
I agree completely. I saw an iPhone ad where they were calling John Appleseed. That was the day I realized the iPhone is stupid. I dont even know John Appleseed so why the heck would I want a phone that can ONLY call John Appleseed and do nothing other than what they showed in the commercial?

Ah, the ignorance of people. Apparently you didn't do your homework on what Siri is able to do. Tell me how being able to read and write messages hands free isn't a powerful tool? Or, being able to ask a phone for almost any type of information without having to type it not a powerful tool?

Is being able to open Notepad and simply speaking to the phone as it writes down whatever you say not a powerful tool?

Ignorance is bliss.

I'm a sales rep who spends large chunks of his day in the car.

For me, Siri is quite literally the definition of a killer feature. It's going to massively increase my productivity, and allow me to do so without breaking any laws.

Can't wait to start using it on friday, tbh.

Some people (the OP for example) need to realise that just because a feature isn't of interest to THEM, that it could still be close to life changing for someone else, and a MASSIVE reason to buy the phone.

I will never use it. Period. No matter what it can do, or how much hype it generates. It's just not my style.
You got the syntax down perfectly comma so apparently it is your style period

You don't know a John Appleseed? I know like, forty.

perfect example for me:

I went out to eat and get a beer with some buddies after class the other day and told my girlfriend i would pick her up a sandwich on the way home and drop it by. If i had siri, i would have been able to say "remind me to go to [insert place] after i leave [the place i was at]." and i wouldn't have forgot. Instead when i got home, i remembered and drove back into the main part of town--would have saved me 10 miles worth of gas, at 3.50ish/gallon. This is something i will use A LOT because i commonly have 10s of small tasks each day to get done and tend to forget one or two, usually the spontaneous ones.

Since I drive in LA traffic every day, texting and asking what the traffic is like ahead will be priceless.

Not to mention, "Siri, what's the weather like in (insert city that you don't live in) today?" is much easier than having to type it in. Extremely useful when traveling or checking in on family.

Exactly. If someone travels a lot then "What's the weather going to be like in Paris next Tuesday?" is a lot quicker than launching a weather app and changing the location and date, especially if it's a multi-city trip where the next question might be "How about Berlin on Wednesday?", and then "and Milan on Thursday?".

As Siri gets smarter maybe one day it'll be possible to just say "What'll the weather be like for my trip next week?" and Siri will be smart enough to work out the cities being visited and what days you'll be in each from your calendar entries and create a one page composite forecast for the appropriate cities on the appropriate days.

Personally I think that this is already amazing stuff and the possibilities going forward could be really exciting. This is just the first release.

If you are going to talk out your text messages and emails, why not just pick up the phone AND CALL THAT PERSON?

Me too!! I think the potential of this is really awesome!! I think some people are missing how exciting it can be to have this kind of technology and to be a part of something that's new, in the consumer space anyway, and can grow into something so truly exciting.

Siri is the beginning of more to come. Think of Siri as a child and that in the next 18 years, it will be something out of science fiction. It might even rebel in 2026 during that year of updates.

After watching all the demos with Siri, I do think it's a fun and neat feature. I just don't think people will be using it as much as they think. Yes, I can see people using it in their cars but while at work, school, meeting, restaurant, etc.. I don't see people talking out loud making a grocery list or scheduling appointments. We'll find out within the next couple of weeks. I'm sure there will be a poll for it.. :p

Maybe he's talking about Siri integration with Find my Friends?

Oh, like "Siri, where is (insert a name of child or spouse)" and it would use Find my Friends to tell you.

Okay, now if you were a parent with a teenager and had that turned on, it would be pretty awesome to know where your kid was, if it has parental locks so they can't turn it off. This is more a + for the app and not Siri accessing it though.

sometimes anti-social, always anti-siri

I have used all 3 of those for work purposes, doesn't even come close to Siri.

So have I - and I have used Siri since it was first on the App market. And I would say that while Siri is different - I wouldn't say the other apps don't come close.

That remains to be seen once people start using Siri as it's integrated into iOS - which would obviously set Siri apart (widely) from the other apps - and even set it apart from when Siri was just a stand alone app.

ETA: The software itself isn't revolutionary - Siri's been doing it for over a year. The fact that Apple has INTEGRATED it is what is evolutionary.

Prior to IO5/iPhone 4S - Apple didn't allow voice apps any level of integration.

But Vlingo can shop for apps, control music, open up new sites to certain pages and many things Siri does. But it's not INTEGRATED. There's the "apple magic".

If someone is disabled it dramatically increases access that most of us take for granted. :)

I've been seeing this point raised in various threads about Siri, and while I can see Siri will be great for some type of disabilities, like people with visual impairments or mobility/coordination problems, I'd like to point out that without means for keyboard input, Siri doesn't work for people like me, who have speech disabilities. Personally, I'm disappointed I probably wouldn't be able to take advantage of most of Siri's functions, and really hope Apple eventually adds text input to Siri. Siri app had text input, so why didn't they just leave it in? :(

Indeed. I think the point is - that some want to argue that this technology hasn't existed or that this is new and only because of Apple. Partly true. As I said above - Apple integrated the technology making it convenient and more readily available.

Lol..I can understand that...I like your tag line :)

But, I guess it's like this...if you watched Star Trek and thought, yeah, them talking to their computers and having it respond is silly or will never happen then Siri may not seem as cool. But if you watched Star Trek and went wow, I can't wait to do that then Siri is exciting.
