It's been much better today than in the past. Thanks again Arn (for the upgrade, and a great site:)).

In theory how long can we go on these servers before even thinking of an upgrade. Is this a long term fix.

We won't know until we get there. This is a big jump though because it upgraded all servers with modern hardware. Old servers were a few years old. So while the jump in # of servers wasn't huge, the capacity of each server is much higher.

Ooooh I'm getting that warm fuzzy feeling. I hope these new ones last a long time.:)

Great news! This will help ensure that MacRumors continues to be an excellent resource & community for a long time to come!

A big, heartfelt thank you to Arn & Co. :)

Does Apple run their site on xserves? :p

What did they use before they made the xserve?

WooHoo, new servers...

I guess I have been lucky and have not had any "sever Busy" error, but it's nice to know I should not expect any.:D

I wish I could get new servers, my Suns are getting kind of old.

I remember that Hotmail still ran on BSD for a couple years after MS bought it. They tried switching to Windows pretty quickly, but they ran into massive availability issues and had to switch back. It's on Windows now though.

I don't see any reason MacRumors should be running on OS X though. It's a great desktop OS, but as a server OS it doesn't offer much you can't get with Linux (or BSD, or Solaris, or ...). It certainly doesn't offer better performance.

Ah, i like.

Congrats Arn. I envy you and some of the other creators of huge (and i mean huge forums / websites) that have just shot through the roof in activity / popularity.

fyi, we're on Clovertown-based servers with softlayer.com. Not running on Mac OS X, however. They run variants of Linux.

That's great even the powers that be Mac Rumors think "Mac cost to much" and get something else..

I agree. macs are great desktops. The user interface is why you buy a Mac. Servers generally run headless with no user interface at all except maybe ssh.

This is cool, perhaps someone would be willing to release the full tech specs of the servers for us geeks? :D :)
