A menu bar is a bar containing a menu (heh), a status bar is a bar containing a status. The menu bar in MacOS has always been called "menu bar", because it is a menu bar. And according to the System Preferences, it is still called "menu bar".

So, why call it here "status bar"??

Agreed. Status Bar is typically associated with Safari.

And I am unable to locate the option for "Automatically hide and show the menu bar app." in System Preferences/General.

Is Menu Bar App new?

I didn’t know about command + ~ (tilde) to switch between multiple windows of the same app. That is a really useful shortcut.

I really like that cmd+tilde shortcut but it only works in finder.

It should work for other apps too. I just tested it on El Capitan and it worked in Safari.

#4 – whoa, since when is the Mac's menu bar called the status bar? (And the option refers to hiding and showing the "menu bar," not the "menu bar app.")

You're right, I should have called it the menu bar. I've updated. Thank you :)

I've also fixed the bit that said option shift didn't work with Touch Bars, it does! I'm not sure what I was doing wrong earlier, but so long as the Touch Bar is expanded, it works when you tap the volume keys. Thank you guys for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

5. Touch Bar Escape Keyboard Command - If you hate the non-physical escape key on Apple's Touch Bar MacBook Pros, there's a keyboard command alternative that's supported by most apps. Use Command + Period in lieu of the escape key to do things like exit out of full screen windows.

Out of interest does this work on a Mac without a touchbar?

I just tried it out on my old iMac running El Capitan but it didn’t exit out of fullscreen Safari or do anything noticeable.
The ESC key works fine for me, but I was just interested to know.

I really like that cmd+tilde shortcut but it only works in finder. The volume thing sounds intriguing but as im running mojave i guess i cant do it
Command + ~ is one I use nearly every day. It works in every app that has more than one window open currently (such as Finder or Safari or Pages). Try opening another window if you can't get it to work on the app you're using.

It used to work for me in a previous version but at some point that functionality disapperead for me. Its a shame because i really liked that shortcut. Ive opened extra windows in safari, and there is no menu option for ‘cycle through windows’ in the window section

Actually, number 6 does work with the Touch Bar. Do shift + option and then swipe/flick on the volume button on the Touch Bar to get it to go up and down in increments.
yep, same with the touch bar volume slider, jumps 2 steps

Here goes one I find extremely useful: when you highlight a file in Spotlight (and many other apps too), use cmd+R to locate it, i.e. open the containing folder.
Also, keeping cmd pressed (this one in Spotlight only) reveals a status bar down below displaying the path to the file.

Thank you so much, wish I knew this a long time ago. I used to do the extra unnecessary step of doing searches in finder instead of spotlight just to find locations :(

Also #7 (command + tilde) in the original article is a brilliant tidbit I never knew, and will find mega useful going forward. Great article.

1 isn't working for me. 2016 tbMBP.
#1 not working for me either (cmd-V for paste and match style). Tried in Mail and Notes (High Sierra).

CORRECTION: Does work! You need to match the regular menu title exactly. Like it says...

If you hold down Option + Shift while you use your volume or brightness keys, you can adjust the brightness or volume in smaller increments.

If you hold just Option when hitting any of the volume keys (up/down/mute), it will open the Sound preferences.

Same goes for

- brightness (opens Displays)
- Mission Control (opens Mission Control preferences)
- keyboard brightness (opens Keyboard preferences)

Option-pressing media playback keys and the Launchpad keys seems to do nothing.

I knew about this for macOS, but is there a similar volume incrementer for iOS? I always have to make minute volume adjustments by using the Digital Crown on my Apple Watch.

Long-standing iOS irritation: there are only 16 levels of volume when using the volume buttons! It's pretty easy to get "caught" between two when adjusting the volume to your preferred level. This carries through with connected Bluetooth speakers and headphones with volume controls.

Why not at least 32 levels or even 64? If there's a concern about volume changes being too slow, play with the acceleration so it changes faster as you hold it. Not exactly UI rocket science.

Feels like a very basic shortcoming in a device that gets used frequently used for audio playback.

Don't know if what I say is actually true (More levels): If you slide up in iOS you get into control centre, next hold the volume, a bigger one shows up (Full screen), seems to me there are more levels there.

No.7 is a game changer, I’ve been frustrated by not knowing this or being able to find details for a long time!

I would love to use the Command + Tilde trick, but it doesn't work on a Mac with a JIS (Japanese) QWERTY keyboard. Rather, Command + Tilde increases the font size in applications (which is also useful).

For #5 -- that is a throw back to old apps where command-. was used as a stop / terminate -- whatever. Another alternative if you need to "send" an escape is control-[ since that is what escape really is.

Really? I've let to find an app where it doesn't work. e.g. Safari, Terminal, etc.

5. Dear Apple: Put the ESC key back. Those of us who use the VIM editor need the real key.

"Say you're editing an article in TextEdit"... who's using that for writing an article?

CMD SHIFT KEY WITH THE @ SIGN? (It's the backtick/grave accent [not the tilde] that you want.)

Yep, looks like you're right. Bummer. I've updated the article to note this. I do think it was phased out once before in a different update and then added back, so maybe Apple will bring it back again?

Number 7 should be CMD BACKTICK/GRAVE ACCENT (not tilde), according to Apple:
