App Store employees with review and editorial roles are not supposed to meet with developers, but an internal audit raised suspicions about half a dozen workers, leading to an investigation. Apple found that the employees had accepted free meals and nightclub outings from developers and consultants that operate businesses claiming they can get games featured in the App Store.
How do you even get busted for stuff like that?
Probably posted photos of themselves on their social media accounts

Oh yes sure, it’s widely known that Apple employees are paid so bad they need to accept bribes to survive /ironyoff

Let me ask you, have you ever went above the speed limit on highways? It’s illegal, but everyone (in lots of states) is doing it. Does it make it legal? No! But will you do it because it’s the “culture”? Yes! Can you get pulled over? Yes as well.

It’s the same, when it’s how businesses are operated by everyone in China, you tend to follow to not be the odd one out.

Well to be honest, it might be natural to think they are breaking business of conduct. That is given you lived in the western world.

And there is nothing wrong with Apple following what they believe and firing the employees.

But you do need to understand the culture and how people do business is very different in Asia. And maybe somethings western companies do would be considered inappropriate.

This is partially the cause of so many western companies’ failure in penetrating Asian market.

so western companies should make different business conduct rules for asian employees ?
taking bribes is ok, getting favors from vendors is ok ?
US government can prosecute American companies even if they did something illegal in Asia.

Bribes. Campaign contributions. Private jet trips. Luxury vacations. Private college tuition.

Tomayto, tomahto.
Campaign contributions is not a bribe as long as they keep the records and use that money for just campaign activities.
Lot of politicians were prosecuted for not following the rules.

So, will Apple ban the companies and developers involved?!

If not, then they really aren't upholding a code of conduct…

The rule of law and accountability should to all — little fish, big fish, employees, and, especially, the companies doing the bribing, corrupting, enticing, and norm violating.

Surprised no one mentioned that…

This is how business is done in the East. It doesn’t necessarily reek of corruption, it’s a different culture entirely, dont throw your sense of morality into the mix.

Far be it for me, a laowai to wade into Chinese culture but I will say there is something to the concept of what western logic sees as corruption as being integral to Chinese business:

Guanxi is something that’s important in-so-much as people often feel the need to trust each other by knowing them in a social context before trusting them in a business context. Of course Chinese companies know full well that westerners don’t see / understand / like this kind of mixing of business and pleasure so tend not to try and engage in it.

I’m not saying that’s what happened here, it certainly looks like more straightforward as a local Apple employee having a good night at the expense of a dev trying to get their app fast-tracked. They should have known to keep it quiet though since any other local employees also know this doesn’t fly in a company like Apple and would happily get the coworker sacked by telling their oblivious laowai manager.
