I have practically tried everything to rectify the issue but to no avail. I strongly believed it is a hardware issue ... durability issue. I hope the Apple Team will acknowledge the issue and take the necessary actions. Until Apple give an assurance that the issue has been resolved, I will not consider buying iPhone X or any of their newer product. I am posting this comment to give awareness to other Apple fans of the issue.

So after 2 hrs of haggling with apple, they finally replaced my 256GB SG X. First phone serial started with C new phone serial starts with D.

I went up to the apple store yesterday (because my 7+ was not responding to touch and would not respond to voice (no input sound) when in a phone call).

They told me I had to schedule another appointment for my X (tmrw) which is today.

So I went back up to the store today.

After putting the phone on a diagnostics stand, and running all the tests ( in the book) it passed and was told it was considered normal to have the crackling speakers (ear piece).

I also told them that the phone was having FaceID and battery life issues. It took multiple times (failures) for faceID to unlock the phone.

Battery life would only last, 5-6 hours (100-18%) (Look at my other thread for that info)

The person told me the standard apple protocol (that they tell everyone else, i've seen come and go from the genius bar.)

that it was a SOFTWARE problem and to go back home and restore the phone to factory settings and "it will be fine".

Problem is I already, clean restored the phone multiple times and have had these 3 problems since I got it on day one.

After being told multiple times "that they can not replicate these issues" and "they will not replace the phone." and it these issues was "unheard of".

After 1 hr and 1/2 or so of more haggling, the person helping me finally brought a L2 Genius.

I over heard him saying, that its known and its a "developing problem" and being "investigated" internally by Apple.

She then found internal articles of the "ongoing investigation" about the crackling speaker.

New replacement with serial that starts with D, has the same crackling speaker issue but FaceID works great on this phone.

I will report back, into see if my battery issues are fixed with the replacement.

So we will see if apple releases an iOS update to "FIX" this problem.

I honestly think its a hardware problem every phone ive tested at the store had the same crackling speaker. (all phones on display, serial number started with C.)

I had the same crackling / rattling issues. Took my phone back to T-Mobile they swapped it out my new one does the same thing. Idk if I should get another thru T-Mobile or take it to Apple. They offered to replace the screen as the speaker is apart of the screen on this new phone ?

I’ve been having the crackle issue also. It’s not the speakers in the phone. It’s software. Crackle showed up on phone speakers, on Bluetooth speakers, and in the car when connected via USB cable for Apple CarPlay.

I fixed the problem by disabling “Sound Check” on the iPhone.

Go to SETTING >> MUSIC >> SOUND CHECK (scroll to bottom and disable).

All crackling gone regardless of which speakers I now use (ZERO crackle on phone speakers, on Bluetooth speakers, and in the car when connected via USB cable for Apple CarPlay)!

Merry Christmas, all!

I don’t think you’re talking about the same issue. We’re talking about the top speaker only.

My crackle issues were from the “ear” speaker and the speaker at the bottom of the iPhone X (as well as Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay speakers, as previously mentioned).

Did you disable Sound Check and still get the crackle from the “ear” speaker?

Sadly I’ve already sent my iPhone back because of this issue. I thought it was hardware because I’ve found many display units that where flawless. I will try your trick on my next unit if it has the same problem ! Thank you for your help

Same problem with the speaker.
The Genius told me ir was normal.... All the iPhone X in the Apple Store have the same issue.
Finally they acepted to change the screen, the result is that Now sounds worse....
my conclusion is that the speaker is ********

I don’t have a developer’s account so i can’t install 11.2.5

It is known if beta 11.2.5 solves the problem?
I have changed my iphone 2 times and they all have the same problem, it is more or less visible but it happens in all of them.

Hey guys
Two days back I’ve purchased iPhone X 64 GB and had same issue of crackling sound from ear piece or buds. Apple support team suggested me to visit near by service center to diagnosis the issue. Finally I’m able to find the issue of crackling sound due to network provider. When we try switch on both 4G and 3G options, this dissorted sounds will come. Now I have disabled the 4G option since my mobile carrier provider has issues with the 4G network. The issue of crackling sound is resolved now. Thanks to Apple support team and authorised service center.

Cheers!!!

A limited but increasing number of iPhone X owners claim to be experiencing so-called "crackling" or "buzzing" sounds emanating from the device's front-facing earpiece speaker at high or max volumes.

iphone-x-earpiece-800x565.jpg

Over two dozen users have said they are affected in a MacRumors discussion topic about the matter, while similar reports have surfaced on Twitter and Reddit since the iPhone X launched just over a week ago.

On affected devices, the crackling sounds occur with any kind of audio playback, including phone calls, music, videos with sound, alarms, and ringtones. The issue doesn't appear to be limited to any specific iPhone X configuration or iOS version.

"Love the phone but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the speakers slightly sounding a little crackling whenever max volume," said one MacRumors forum member with the alias ShadowYYZ. "Noticeable on certain songs and even my ring tone which was bought from the iTunes Store."

For those unaware, the iPhone X's earpiece doubles as a speaker that combines with the traditional speaker at the bottom of the device to deliver stereo sound. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series also have stereo speakers.

MacRumors hasn't been able to reproduce the issues described. Apple didn't immediately respond to our request for comment on the matter.

While the sounds could be the result of distortion, especially since they occur at higher volumes only, several users are convinced that there could be a bigger software or hardware issue affecting the earpiece.

"I listen to a lot of music on the speakers of the iPhone X and I noticed the slight crackle right away," replied another MacRumors forum member who goes by the username Benz63amg. "Since so many of us seem to experience this crackle then my assumption is that it's software related rather than hardware."

A few months ago, several iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus owners experienced a similar "static noise" issue with the earpiece during phone calls. Apple acknowledged the issue and fixed it in iOS 11.0.2.

Since the crackling sounds on iPhone X don't appear to be limited to phone calls, it's unclear if the issues are related.

Apple has been replacing affected iPhone X units free of charge, according to customers who contacted the company. Apple also appears to be collecting diagnostic information so that its engineers can investigate the matter, as it routinely does with any potential software or hardware issues.

Like the green lines affecting some iPhone X displays, this is an isolated issue affecting a very low percentage of the millions of devices being manufactured. The majority of iPhone X owners do not appear to be affected.

If you experience this problem, we recommend booking a Genius Bar appointment with the Apple Support app or contacting Apple via phone, email, online chat, or Twitter to have your iPhone X replaced. Apple is known for providing good customer service, and it is often genuinely helpful in these situations.

Buy from a different vendor, one wich has a quality control that does not mean "exchange defective phones for refurbushed ones" but actually makes good stuff from the beginning :D.

I was experiencing this (significant distortion from the earpiece speaker.)

Long story short, I took it to the Apple Store yesterday. They ran a sound diagnostic, and the headset speaker passed! However, the test failed on the "bottom right microphone."

The agent proceeded to clean all of the microphones and the headset speaker, but it still failed that and only that test.

But since it failed that, they gave me a brand new replacement phone. And I am happy to report that the new one has no distortion at all! (In fact it is a day and night difference! Not only is it not distorting but it is also significantly louder!)

Could something with the mic issue have actually caused this? Perhaps it messed with some noise cancellation algorithm? The "Genius" was as perplexed as me.

Any ideas?

Still, since all iPhone X's are still under even the standard warranty, I suggest doing what I did. It was a painless process and not a hassle at all to get a replacement. (Thank you Apple!)

If anyone else does this and has some insight into a possible relationship with a mic issue, can you please let me know?

Thanks in advance and good luck!
