Macro did a great job helping me identify this baby Centruroides sculpturatus (Arizona Bark Scorpion) that I found in my bathroom yesterday morning. Despite looking all big and bad in the photo, he was only about ¼" long, so tiny I couldn't even tell exactly what kind of bug it was when I first saw it (not a super high quality pic, I ran for my phone and snapped the picture quickly, wasn't exactly concerned with being artistic about it!)

That would be terrifying if it was a lot bigger!

Some of these shots are amazing!!

I think it really depends upon what you upgrading from. I had an iPhone X. The upgrade for me is fantastic. I must admit, though, that the ability to capture very small things with the macro photography might have gotten me yo purchase it even if I had the iPhone 12. I love this camera!

Agree. This year's update feels so much more substantial than last year. The macro and 120 Hz screen alone are so niceeee.

I have a five-year-old iPhone 7 which I still use every day… the screen is getting noticeably worn and the battery quality is down at 80% and it sometimes unexpectedly goes black.

I was checking Jason Snell’s upgrades comparison and this is what he said under the iPhone 7:

”But again, congratulations: pretty much everything on your new phone is going to be better.

iPhone 13 adds:

  • Phone body: Larger (unless you buy an iPhone 13 mini), more damage-resistant screen, better water resistance.
  • Display: Larger, higher resolution, OLED, brighter, HDR, True Tone.
  • Chip: Three times as fast.
  • Buttons: Face ID instead of Touch ID, sensors in TrueDepth “notch” on display; home button replaced with gestures. No more support for 3D Touch.
  • Battery life: Dramatically better.
  • Networking: 5G, Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi 6, Ultra Wideband.
  • Camera: Wider aperture and improved sensors on standard camera, new Ultra Wide camera for more expansive shots, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, Night Mode for dark settings, Portrait Mode, Deep Fusion for enhanced details, Photographic Styles.
  • Selfie camera: Higher resolution (12 megapixels) with support for portait mode.
  • Video: HDR video up to 4K 60fps, Cinematic Mode.
  • Charging: Support for wireless Qi and MagSafe charging.
iPhone 13 Pro also adds:

  • Display: ProMotion display up to 120Hz refresh rate.
  • Camera: Telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, ProRAW image capture and ProRes video capture, LiDAR scanner for night mode portraits, faster autofocus in low light, and augmented reality.”
So yes, I am tempted… I could be scroogey and make the iPhone 7 last another year, but the 13 does look very good.

But its tempting every year. Last year it was 5G and Dolby Vision and ProRAW. Things I didn’t care so much about. But this year its a big chunk of battery life, Macro Mode, better night photography and better screens, which I do care about.

At the moment some days of heavy use I find myself recharging twice, which I really dislike. So maybe it’s time to ditch the old 7 and move on to a 13 Pro.

Amazed by the lens capabilities. Usually shoot macro with my Nikon so great to just pull out my cell phone… Small jumping spider (background is a bit busy)View attachment 1855329
Awesome picture! It’s mostly the macro pictures I mainly like to see. The others are nice but I like being impressed at what can be captured at short range (that we’ve never been capable before now).

How are you all getting up close and personal to these bees, wasps, spiders without scaring them off or getting bit/stung?

I think it’s time!
No. Don’t stop hunting for those shots. They are awesome!
