China ought to take this chance to withhold approval unless Disney agrees not to make any content critical of the Chinese government, any former, current or future Chinese leaders, the Chinese people, China as a country, or anything related to Chine both past and present and into the future.
That’s not how it works. Maybe they can make a business case against it...

ESPN+ is a total failure. Who would want to pay for stuff that’s old, or the kind of sports you see on ESPN3. When they include live ESPN channels, then we’ll be talking. Until then, it’s yet another useless app for the AppleTV…

Say bye to Alien series or another season to The X-Files (which is fine) I worry more for R-rated MCU movies like Deadpool and for MCU movies that are not out yet like New Mutant and Dark Phoenix. I know they would like to bring in Deadpool to the MCU universe but are they willing to make their PG-13 universe R-rated?

One word MONOPOLY

Just wow, the special interest on what huge mergers are allowed or not that are aligned to current political preference.
Monopoly of what? No seriously, what is being monopolized here? Movies? Movie studios are monopolies by nature because of copyright laws. That doesn’t change here, only the company owning the rights changes.

... Disney has warned Netflix users that it will begin removing its TV shows and films from Netflix before its own platform launches.

Would they not make more money with having their films and TV shows on more than just one platform?

So... is Firefly (& Serenity) one of the IP's Disney would now own?
If so, I wonder if Disney would have any more interest than Fox had in making more quality content in the Firefly universe.
Fox lost a ton of money on Serenity, so not a chance. If Solo made a profit, but was considered a flop, they're not going to go there.

The Firefly fanbase is incredibly vocal, but much smaller than you'd think.

Imagine if you could watch Netflix shows on other platforms. It could give you no incentive to subscribe to Netflix.

Given the current IPs that Disney owns, it makes sense for Disney to start taking ownership of the content and distribute it via a first party service. Their goal probably is to not primarily disrupt Netflix but to grow the Walt Disney company. Shareholders are mighty pleased.

Remember though they will not be removing Punisher, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and The Defenders I believe contract for those MCU are different but I do worry in the future when they want they want to connect with another MCU character this is where Disney is going to have to figure out if they should give a character a series of its own on Netflix or strictly only on Disney streaming. In the end Disney will realize that once again having their own streaming service with all the MCU will not bring customers like last time but I am sort of getting tired of paying for multiple streaming service I wish studios would just work together instead of against each other.

True but Disney shares are doing great even before I mean they got Disney theme park in CA and FL they also own most of MCU now, they own networks such as ABC, Feeform, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN Classic, ABC News and I can go on and on.

As long as any of the exclusive shows or movies that get to be on Disney Streaming hopefully get a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-Ray release.

Firefly = Fox
Serenity = Universal

And define “lots of money” since you apparently know something no one else does.

Budget $39 million
Box office $38.9–40.1 million

Now add to that marketing and all other related costs.

I liked Firefly, but it has an extremely minimal chance of coming back. I mean, they didn't even finish airing the original series. Episodes that were shot and finished.

I think their shares have been stagnant and need to go up. The only way to do that and become even more profitable is to take back their content. With a number of consumers looking to cord cut, the timing of the streaming service is on point. Recently even Discovery announced they are going to have a new streaming service too

ESPN was also losing a lot of money for them due to sports licensing costs and the drop in cable subscriptions

It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out

How can this get approved by government? Why make a megacorp into a ultracorp?

From a Content standpoint, Disney is just too PC, and just too proud of their offerings. they have many pieces of content I refuse to buy, rent,or even watch (Looking at you ESPN) over their cost and PC stands. Shareholders win, we all lose.

Yeah... Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs are way too PC. Way too safe.

I don’t think you know what that word means.

Hint: mono means 1.

Best 50 bucks I’ve spent. MLS Live used to cost 80. Now I pay 50 and get that, plus Top Rank boxing. Plus a lot of other things that are great.

I’m confused... what does this have to do with Apple?

- Apple are working on their own exclusive streaming content as mentioned. The Disney service is a competitor.
- Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney, which gave his estate a significant investment in the company. He was a board member until his death.
- Apple and Disney have shared a close relationship due to Steve Jobs - Disney were an early content partner when iTunes started selling movies.
- Apple TV and the iOS ecosystem are major access points for all streaming content.

Having a hard time seeing how any of these mega mergers has benefited me. Once the dust settles, are my costs, features, benefits better. My perception, not feeling the love. :(

How is China relevant in any way? Not to mention Disney already has to comply with these rules when they release films in China today.

Nah, I wouldn't be surprised if they either make a new subsidiary of Disney to handle those titles which would be considered "R" rated or the content is not what we usually get from Disney.

Oh America and your love for monopolies and duopolies. Customer choice really scares you. Competition and fair prices too.

What makes you think Americans like monopolies/duopolies? The vast majority of Americans have ZERO say in what these companies do, who they buy up, merge with or sell out to. It's a tiny minority of shareholders who own enough of the company to sway the actions of the company.

Touchtone & BuenaVista (and likely others) I think are Disney's defacto subsidiaries already in place for decades, just for the titles they didn't want directly under the "Disney" name. nothing stopping them from making a new one of course, just saying that Disney already knows how to make it happen.

I get your point, I still hope you're wrong, but I get it.
interesting enough, I loved Firefly but like many fans I was late t o the party. I first saw it almost 2 years after it aired. I think this is relatively common, and "nerd" shows are more popular in general that they used to be. I think Firefly if done right could make some good original content for Disney to have on their streaming service (besides, Disney loves to try to milk IP's long past their prime, that could be in our favor). With all that said, I wasn't a fan of Serenity nearly as much as the show, I can see why it didn't earn as much.

And there we have it. I forgot about Touchstone and BuenaVista. I have a feeling those might be where we see some of the "R" rated movies land.
