I want them to get away from integrating the LCD into the glass. As someone who's front glass cracked but the LCD and digitizer still work perfect, it sucks to have to pay so much just to replace the glass front.

They better use Gorilla Glass in the next revision.

That's an awfully good point, can't count how many times I have seen people break the glass on their screens.

Honestly I think it would be kind of nice if we could find a way to make these screens without a layer of glass over them at all.

Same thing happend to me this week. It really sucks, on my 3G it was just a piece of glass now it's the whole digitizer/LCD/glass assembly.

Ah well with this your LCD will die instantly as well when you drop it. So you won't notice the annoying crack. :p

Toshiba also seems to make these displays: http://www.tmdisplay.com/tm_dsp/en/technology/p-si.html

The article also describes a technology used for "edge-to-edge" displays, as rumored for iPhone5:
"The integration of drive circuits directly onto the glass surface also contributes to reducing the number of component parts designed on the outside substrate, as in conventional displays. This integration helps to make the peripheral edges of the display screen even smaller"

My wife and I switched to AT&T on the day the 3GS the day it came out nearly 2 years ago.

I've been itching to give the old one to my wife and upgrade this year to the iPhone 4S or 5 or whatever they'll call it. However, if the new iPhone doesn't come out till September and it isn't a 4G phone I may eek another year out until the sixth gen iPhone which sounds like it may be more of a substantial upgrade.

So, still the antiquated LCD and no super AMOLED display in 2012? Hard to envisage.

I wonder if the new screens will also be integrated into ipad 3 also due in 2012.

I'm hoping amazon makes a kindle phone with e-ink. It would be nice to see competition that actually makes something a little different instead of just copying the trend Apple sets.

I heard iPhone 8 is going to be amazing. You won't even have to touch it to do stuff, it'll read your mind.

iPhone 9 will be like the one you saw in Futurama (eyePhone).

Sharp always make fantastic mobile screens, years ago when they sold high end phones as exclusives through vodafone their displays were literally years ahead of the competition.

I've been a fan of sharp for a while. Just in general I've always had good luck with their products (microwaves and tvs mostly). On top of that they don't have a big name like Sony or Panasonic so you don't pay a premium for their products (or as much as one).

My current tv which is a Sharp has a much better picture even with lower resolution than the Phillips I bought and returned before buying this one. And my last Sharp tv last I checked was still working fine at 15 years of age (I gave it away finally). And me and my roommate fight over the Sharp microwave (we got before we moved into this house) even though we also have a GE (never buy GE products btw, pieces of crap) microwave that came with the house.

I don't want it thinner; I want it to have better contrast, better brightness and blacks to actually look black.

...

On another note sharp claims to have orders for iphone 6 screens and china is still denying having any orders for the iphone 5 yet

wait -- so we should halt the march of progress toward smaller, lighter devices because it means dropping your gear gets more costly?

er, what?

Which philips did you buy? Because from what I gather philips uses Sharp's LCD panels for their high end tv's.

Every time I read about a new, improved gadget/tech, I can't help but think of that BestBuy "BuyBack" future proofing commercial. Even before the iPhone 5 comes around there's already talk of the iPhone 6. When will the madness end!? :p

(also makes me wonder, if we can have tech advancements so quickly why are we still burning fossil fuels and boiling radioactive water?)
