Says the guy with a join date of June 2010. Creating an account just to troll is worse then people being fans of a product and posting in a forum dedicated to that product. Trust me, you look more pathetic then any "fanboy" does ;)

It's fine people being fans of a product, and that is certainly why I post on this forum myself, not to troll as you suggest. But it's astonishing to see the number of people who seem unwilling to recognise even the most obvious faults and seem to resent others holding Apple to account by perhaps getting a free replacement iphone. It's ridiculous to suggest that someone should have paid for a replacement phone when they've been offered a free one. That lack of rational thinking is a defining characteristic of fanboyism.

, and it came loose out of my hand and landed flat on it's back on the concrete garage floor. The fall was from roughly 3 ft up, not far, not violent, but it made a loud crack noise as it hit.

Consumer rights.

You shouldn't have to pay to replace an item that should easily sustain the type of impact that was mentioned, especially with a bumper. Apple should start to take some responsibility and the fanboys really need to make a better attempt at holding Apple to account in order to improve the company and it's products.

The level of fanboyism shown by some on this forum is both amusing and sad.

So, a phone with all of the glass that the iPhone has should survive a drop of 3 feet onto a concrete surface? I would never expect that to happen.

When the phone is made from something called 'gorilla glass', and is fitted with the manufacturers own case, called a bumper which suggests it is designed to increase resistance to impacts, then yes I would expect it to withstand a 3ft fall.

FYI -

THE IPHONE 4 IS NOT MADE OF GORILLA GLASS!

please stop spreading that BS!

If it is, please show me something in writing from Apple that specifically states they are using Corning's glass on the iPhone. Lastly, ANY glass object will break. Apple did not claim the iPhone was break/shatter/chip proof. A 3 foot fall on concrete for a GLASS phone is a 50/50 shot of it coming out not damaged. Please, for the love of the internet - stop expecting Apple to suck up to every consumer that breaks their phone because they have butter fingers. If you are that bad - DO NOT GET A GLASS PHONE!

I'm done :)

Half truth: only the front is made of gorilla glass. And you gotta calm down man. The op already said that he wasn't trying to get a replacement for free, just trying to get it fixed. Hell he even sounded alright with the 'tape the back' idea until he replaced the glass himself.

So I just did my own little unplanned drop test. I was getting into my car, and my iphone was in my right hand pocket of my shorts. I reached in to grab it out of my pocket as I opened the car door. The tackyness of the bumper the iphone was wearing caused it to sort of snag on my short pockets, and it came loose out of my hand and landed flat on it's back on the concrete garage floor. The fall was from roughly 3 ft up, not far, not violent, but it made a loud crack noise as it hit. My first thought was "please let it be the back side". I guess I was lucky in that respect, it's easy to replace.

I'm not sure what to do now. Normally I'd sign up for the next available appointment at the apple store and plead for mercy. But I've got a wedding to go to at 2pm tomorrow, and all of the appointments at both of my apple stores are booked until the afternoon. So if I book online, I won't be able to get in until Sunday...which sucks, because I've got pieces of glass coming off in my hand. Can I just walk in tomorrow morning with no appointment and hope they'll treat me ok?
I did this EXACT same thing with my 3GS just before I got the iP4...tried to take it out of my pocket just before getting into the car...dropped it right on the street...I had it in a soft rubber cover...screen didn't break, but some pretty good scratches on the corner...I now NEVER take the phone out of my pocket until I am fully seated in the drivers seat with the door closed...
Sorry this happened to you...

I agree with this, however, there is certainly a group here (mostly newbies) that want to ONLY focus on the faults (which EVERY smartphone has) and not at all on the positives, of which there are many...
Most here DO seem to be reasonable minded people that can see both the faults and the positives...but, this IS a Apple/Mac friendly site so there IS going to be a certain amount of FanBoyism here...:)

If all else fails, you could always find a site that sells manufacturer iPhone backs and do a quick replacement.

FYI The bumper is designed to cover up the chipped sides, not protect the glass from cracking.

Please show me where. I really want to know.

I have had my iPhone 4 32gig since launch day and love it to death..love my iPad, iPods and MacBook Pro to...but what grinds my gears is that apple decided to place the serial and imei number onto the sim tray, and conspicuously left off the gigabyte size from the rear of the phone for the first time ever. That makes it easy to replace because every black model has an interchangeable back plate, but clearly shows apple knew that it was much more prone to breaking no matter how much the toted its new glass. I have a full body invisible shield and a bumper just to try and avoid anything like this from happening.

Well I just placed an order for a Switcheasy Naked for the iPhone 4. It's a minimal case, but I think it's enough, and better than the bumper. Which clearly was not designed to protect you from all falls.

If this happens in the future, I will hope more parts are readily available. I have taken the phone apart myself already, and know how easy it is to remove and replace the back. However, the parts shown on chinaontrade and elsewhere seem to be just the glass. I'm not sure what needs to be done to get the brackets and the lenses installed. And who knows what quality of glass they are.

I hope Apple eventually begins to repair this problem in store. I have had a genius open up my Iphone 4 already once when I complained of a clicking noise in my first phone. So I know they can open them. If they just start stocking back plates it could be a 10 minute job and cost less than 50 bucks (which I'd gladly pay).

lastly, I knew there were a ton of other shattered glass threads. I just posted this one because of the recent video showing that the bumpers offered no protection from drops by modyouri or whatever. And I figured my case helped to prove it all.

For now, I'm still using the bumper until my new case gets in. i will be much more careful now.

OK, but has Apple claimed that the iPhone 4 was engineered to withstand a X ft. drop? Has is claimed the bumper offers any additional protection against drops up to X ft? If these exist I've never come across them. Please link to where these claims have been made and you have a point. Otherwise you are attributing more "rights" to consumers than they deserve.

Apple need only to be responsible for the claims it actually makes, not the ones people attribute to them but were never actually made.

Most obvious faults? Seriosuly, if you drop something, it's your fault. The iPhone favours a pretty design over a durable one, and people know that. It's glass for crying out loud, it's going to break if it hits a hard surface. Or maybe you're the one failing to recognise?

No where does it say it is meant to survive any drop, bumper or not. If you drop your iPhone, Apple owe you nothing. Heck, they're too generous as it is, I've never known any company to replace something for a spec of dust under the screen which every seems to cry about and run back to the Apple store throwing a tantrum over some dust/dead pixel etc. My DS had 3 dead pixels when it was new, Nintendo offered a 'repair' - but for £60.

I'll reiterate what other people are saying:

No part of the iPhone 4 is made with actual Gorilla Glass™ from Corning.

Apple states they use a special aluminosilicate glass (the kind used in aircraft windshields), and that's it. Not the actual Gorilla Glass, which is different and actually seems stronger than what Apple is using.

I still find it amusing that these types of threads exist. I for one have read threads where the phone takes a dive caseless and survives without a crack. I have read threads where this is not the case. I have read several reports of people dropping their phone with the bumper on as well and have the phone be fine. It honestly all depends on how the phone lands on the fall. Though I am admittedly unfamiliar with other cases, I'd wager that those could be subjected to a similar fate given how the phone lands. It really is just luck that is dependent on the actual landing point of the phone.

Not trying to be an ass but why should apple replace your phone? Responsibility for one's own actions is cool, give it a shot.

They should not. But they might be better off replacing all phones with broken glass. They kind of asked for it by designing a glass phone. Bad publicity may just kill them.
