Shattered Sapphire Screen

I was shocked to find out that there wasn't same day replacement! I talked to Apple and made two separate phone calls because I thought the rep was mistaken. At least there is express replacement but I keep glancing to my wrist this morning and every time I do I remember my poor shattered SSSB.
You couldn't take it to an Apple Store for replacement?

My day one watch was faulty and they did an express replacement. I asked them to send replacement first and they did. They will just put a hold on your cc for around $500 until they receive yours back. You might have to speak to a specialist though, which I did.

Isn't this also the only product they sell that hasn't had enough inventory to roll out to all their markets yet?

When supply finally catches up, you can start complaining. Until then, wait, and don't drop your watch.

No, because there have been several years where the new iPhone was severely constrained, yet they've always had white box replacements from day one. The AW marks the first iDevice where they've elected not to stock white box replacements, at least from day one.

Either will shatter if it hit a tile floor just right! I will take sapphire any day for the scratch resistance.

The moral to this story is always put on and take off your watch while holding it over a more friendly surface.

Tile flooring is kiss of death to sapphire screens. Be VERY careful!

Oh my, looks like I'm going to be getting AppleCare+ for my recently purchased Space Black Apple Watch now.

I have noticed very small dust particles get trapped where the edge of the sapphire screen meets the body. You only notice this if you look closely. Is this normal or should I get my watch replaced? I'm within my 14 day return period. Don't want to get the AppleCare+ yet if my watch is defective :(

A can of compressed air will get them out.

Unless you have another insurance product which will cover it, the watch is the only device I would say AC+ is essential for.

Wow, i was under the impression that the sapphire was nearly indestructible. I’ve dropped my watch SOOO many times on hard surfaces straight onto its from with not one spec of damage. But for these reasons i feel like apple care+ is a must. Lets just hope they don't decide to raise the price. Anyone know if costco selling apple care+ places at a discount?

I have a space black apple watch and wore the sport band today to work out. I always have found the sport band to be slightly clumsy compared to the link band and today I paid the price. I was putting the watch back on after a shower, my hands were slightly wet, and the watch tumbled to the tile floor shattering the screen. To all those who say they don't understand how you can drop the watch it is easier than you would think. Until the drop I must admit that the entire watch did not show a single scratch with daily wear. Thankfully I purchased Applecare+ and a new one is on the way.

As a fellow AW owner who just dropped his watch and shattered his screen, I resonate perfectly with your thoughts. I'm never going to try again to wear my watch when my hand's a distance from the floor.

Not to be ignorant, but I thought the sapphire screen was supposed to be indestructible. Does the talk of its superior hardness only apply for the defense against scratches (not shatters)?

It is less shatter proof than the sport model glass. More scratch resistant of course.

Yep, that's why the Omega Speedmaster Pro Moonwatch still uses a Hesalite crystal. It scratches more, but is much more difficult to crack/shatter. It's all a trade off.

Still, it seem the sapphire of the Apple Watch breaks a little more easily than most sapphire analog watches, and I think it's because of the way it is exposed and curves around the corners of the watch.

Ouch !
Question will AppleCare + cover a whole new watch including the band? Or just the face ? Thanks.

Just wanted to update everyone that I received my replacement overnight actually and it was in pristine condition, although it was a white box. They did however only replace the watch itself and not the band it came with. Is this happening to everyone else as well??

Dropped my yesterday on a tile floor and thought for sure it cracked, picked it up and not a mark. I think because it fell flat I lucked out.
