Apple today updated its Shazam music recognition app to allow it to recognize and identify songs that are playing in third-party apps like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

According to Apple, users can open up Shazam, tap the blue button, and switch back to the app that was in use to see what's playing. The Shazam app engages the iPhone's microphone to hear the song, and it is able to listen while the other app is in use. After a few seconds, the song will be identified and swapping back to Shazam will show the song name and information.

It is simpler to use the built-in Song Recognition feature in the iPhone's Control Center to identify a song. With Song Recognition, you can open up an app like YouTube, play a song, swipe into Control Center, and tap the Song Recognition icon to determine what's playing.

Using this method does not require you to exit out of the YouTube app. Once a song is identified, it shows up as a notification or in the Dynamic Island, and you can tap into the Shazam app to get more information.

Identifying a song with Shazam adds it to a Shazam playlist in Apple Music so you can listen to it in full at a later time. For those who don't have Apple Music, the Shazam app also keeps track of recent Shazams.

Shazam can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I don’t get it, wasn’t this always available? I’ve used the Control Center Shazam often and everywhere. Don’t recall coming across any roadblocks… 🤔
I’ve been using it everywhere, too. I have noticed some bugs, but for the most part, I’ve been able to capture tunes from ads playing in other apps. It may be that we were the beta testers preparing them for the formal release today :)

I've been using it through Control Centre in the TikTok app for months? I'm presuming this is specific to the app? But why use the app when it's in Control Centre anyway?
OH, yeah, you’re right, this is just saying that now the app can do it… and the app listens to the speakers… whereas the Control Center version can work even with bluetooth headphones.

Don’t even have the app installed, the control center option is really really good. It identifies music playing in the background of videos pretty flawlessly!

How do you get it to show Shazam’s results in Dynamic Island? I still get a notification on iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The feature wasn’t really missing though. As mentioned you can identify the music in any app by simply tapping the Shazam Control Center button. It’s been available for a while now.
Ah, I have been away from the iPhone for some years now. I will pick up an iPhone 15 once it is available.

Why wasn't this software ever purchased outright by Apple or competitors? Shazam can't possibly make that much money in-app that it wouldn't be worth it.
Apple did buy them, that's how you have it in control centre. Every time I use it, it shows a link to "listen in apple music". Old feature in android, cause multitasking just works.

Please at carplay support. There’s no handsfree option at the moment. And the car radio mutes when Shazam is listening.

Ironic that Apple have the tech yet don't integrate it into their own TV content.

When I'm watching something & hear music, I don't want to reach for the app as it's usually over at that point, it should be directly hard linked into the programme so if I hear something I get a box (like subs) which gives a direct link to Apple Music / add to Apple Music library, it should be relatively resource light for them to do, am I the only one who sees this?

Can't you ask Siri to Shazam it?

Duh!

This feature has been there since the Shazam control feature was added. It’s part of the main api so this is NOTHING new!

What sucks is you cannot record audio in the background using the voice recorder function from control panel when playing from another app. THAT sucks!
