Meh. Back in the day when the AppStore was new, you had Shazam or Midomi. I preferred Midomi and purchased it. It was eventually renamed to Soundoud ∞.

I preferred SoundHound for years, but tried Shazam here recently and I have to say it’s a much nicer experience now (better than SoundHound I’d say).

Just in case you did not know, the "hey Siri, what song is playing?" command uses Shazam to look up the song. The Shazam software is baked into iOS, so all "Hey Siri, what's this song?" is doing is invoking that code to pull up the results in a different UI.
I am aware (hence all of my replies in this thread), but thanks for taking the time.

If you open the iTunes Store and look in the top right corner and tap list, one of the lists is all the songs that Siri has looked up for you and a link to purchasing them in the iTunes Store.

I see the merit of having one’s search history and lyrics all in one app, I just don’t like having redundant apps when I can already do the same thing in iOS or with something I use so infrequently.

Choice is a good thing though.
Thanks. Maybe I might use it more.

Although I found a perfect reason not to use Siri over Shazam, it happened to me just a few minutes ago at the dentist office.

You can very discreetly use Shazam anywhere, Siri isn’t discreet at all.

I’m asking, “What does Shazam do that ‘Hey Siri, what’s this song?’ doesn’t do?”

What’s the point of another app? What am I missing?
Apart from being more discreet than Siri, the other reason I use Shazam over Siri and it is a key feature for me; is when my iPhone is connected to the car's bluetooth and a song is playing on the radio, asking Siri is not an option because as soon as you invoke Siri, the radio stops playing. In this case only Shazam will do.

It also keeps a history of your songs.

For ... finding out what song is playing? Same as always? What’s confusing to you?
While I understand your zealous enthusiasm, the question has already been asked and answered (and in less than 2 pages).

May I humbly suggest taking the time to read previous replies before jumping in? It avoids redundancy and superfluous repetition (such as this very conversation we’re having).

All the best.

Again, this has already been mentioned (as has the fact that the iTunes Store also does this for Siri enquiries).

Why does anyone with iOS have any need for Shazam? What’s the point?

How do you check what that song was you heard last week at the bar? Sometimes I want to do more than just know what song I'm currently listening to. Also Shazam offers live lyrics.

No thanks.

It does not point me to the song on Spotify, though.

Having used both, I have always preferred Shazam over SoundHound. I occasionally check out SoundHound, but I almost always go back to Shazam.

This and Workflow have been my favorite acquisitions. Now if we can just Shazam from the widget rather than opening the app. I expect them both to be better baked into the OS with 13 *fingers crossed*

Now let’s see about Gas Buddy baked right into the Maps app :)

I remember a few years ago that the app was always listening to everything, not just when you invoke it through the app. Has that been changed or is it still always listening?

“Shazam is always listening” is incorrect and always has been.

Furthermore, I’d say you most likely have less to be concerned about now that it has been fully acquired by Apple is no longer struggling financially.

  1. Because talking to Siri isn't always the best of options when you're standing in a bar or club with loud music on and you want to know the song.
  2. Some prefer a GUI over Siri. As far as I know there's no way to trigger music recognition in iOS without Siri. As such you need the app.
  3. Many people downloaded (or bought) Shazam (Encore) years before Siri even existed.
  4. Not everyone owns an iPhone and as such don't have Siri
  5. A more visual list without having to dig around the iTunes Store
I'm sure there are some more.

It also seems to be google free as well now. Which is disappointing as I have used it to access either Google Play Music or You Tube music videos before and used it that way quite a lot. Not going to subscribe to Apple Music, so integrating that is useless to me.
