Don't expect the movie to be representative of the books. Technically the characters are there, but the tone of the movie is typical Hollywood action stuff. The stories are more cerebrally-oriented -- and they're great fun. Most of the stories are short, and reading them is like eating potato chips -- you can't stop at just one.I've seen this movie and found it fun!
But I've never read books. Actually I havn't known Sherlock Holmes untill I see this movie.
I will try to read it.

There's a really good series called "Sherlock" on Netflix as part of Masterpiece Theater. Highly recommended.
+1, I thought it was one of the best things the BBC had done in a long time, I quite liked that it was only 3 episodes rather than churning out rubbish. (e.g Dr Who which I do like, but some episodes are just pointless)I take it that's the 2010 BBC series? Because that was really good.
How about starting with the 4 big onesThanks Thomas.
I've got that this movie differ from novels and reading stories doesn't take me long time.
I'm a Japanese uni student and I'm curious about Sherlock Holmes thesedays. So I want to ask you what story shold read first.
If you have any idea, please let me know what you think.
I think all the Sherlock Holmes books are now public domain so free to download, I even think there's an iPhone app with the complete collection on.

I'm surprised at how many people didn't seem to enjoy the film, I really liked it.
But I definitely liked the BBC series far more! It was amazing, I was so gutted that there were only three episodes. I hope it comes back very soon.
IMO, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the ONLY cinema Holmes and Watson.
I know I sound like an old geezer... wait... I am an old geezer.
Series 2 of it is scheduled to start in Autumn. 3 more episodes. Whats more exciting is I hear there might be an adaptation of the Hound of the Baskervilles in series 2
If you want to see the REAL Sherlock Holmes movies - watch the Basil Rathbone/ Nigel Bruce black and white movies from the 1940's.

This is for you young folks out there.
