The only thing that concerns me, for drive space reasons, is that this is a full blown mac running the full blown Mac OSX system. Utilities and files take up a lot more space, even if you aren't do a lot of content-creation on one, than the iOS devices have. Partially because the iOS devices generally run smaller programs, most producing smaller data files.

The separation is whether you consider this a content creator (I'm not talking Logic Pro, Final Cut or anything, but everything else) or a consumption machine for which you pay the extra money so you have total freedom to run the browser engines you want. Now, I do understand that due to the horrible resolution of Netbooks, this is a machine much more capable of handling the display with all those browsers. It's also probably the coolest machine that can play all those flash games and MMOs. Though I guess much of that gaming wont be used on such a device without an external HD for which Windows is installed on. 64GB SSDs will probably stick with the single operating system option.

Still. It's neat. I'm still thinking about where this would fit in. In some ways, it does almost seem like it's treading into the Macbook arena, given that the pro-connections are mostly left out and yes that Core2Duo is very important for the bigger utilities I always use on my 13" MBP. However, my 2008 Macbook doesn't have quite that many advantages here, with the exception that I did put a much larger HD in it.

Because they are jealous they can't afford one or they are trying to justify their purchase of one even though they have all the computing devices they need.

Seriously, the MBA is a great primary computer, even for users with more needs than just "Internet browsing". Photoshop ? It runs great on my MB currently with lower specs than this thing, it'll run great on this thing to. Even better with the higher res screen if I don't have access to my external monitor.

The storage is fine and plenty. External storage is a must anyway, you don't want your primary storage to be on the device you carry around with you that has much higher risk of damage or loss in the first place.

The fact is, people are grossly overestimating their computing needs. Eidorian is simply a spec freak, disillusionned with Apple and not wanting to move on because "his data is trapped in spotlight!" which makes about as much sense as Vanilla Sky. He wants a Core iX... for what ? "Moar threads". Why ? Who knows, he has some mystical software that fails to run and gives the error "Needs Moar Threads!".

At first, the people calling the MBA a "secondary" computer and "underpowered" were kind of pissing me off, but now I just take it for what it is : Bunch of jealous people who don't really understand how to spec a computer for needs rather than e-peen.

Just because someone says its "crappy" or "underspecced" does not mean they are jealous that they cannot afford one. On paper the new macbook air is underspecced. It may look cool but the specs for the price look terrible. No one is jealous, maybe we realize that paying $999 for old gen specs is a waste of money? If I didnt buy the white macbook a couple months ago and had the option between the 11' and the white macbook, id still buy the white macbook. Its more powerful and is very portable.

However, 64GB of storage ( ~27GB of it used up by the operating system and applications)
Not true, mine has only used 14GB after installing everything including Office and iLife 2011.

The MacBook also offers a faster processor, double the RAM, more ports including an SD slot, optical drive, and longer battery life for the same price. For many people those features are worth hefting around an extra couple of pounds.

The MacBook actually does not have any more RAM its the same 2GB standard, and no SD slot. The battery life is measured differently so a bit unfair to compare.

The Air gains the super fast SSD, aluminium enclosure and a higher resolution display, at the same price point.

For a secondary PC I really can't see why anyone would choose the entry level MacBook over the MacBook Air.

Its a much more usable machine than the entry level MacBook at the same price.

Mid 2010 Macbook $999

13-inch Screen
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR3 memory
250GB hard drive
8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
Built-in 10-hour battery
Polycarbonate unibody enclosure

vs.

Late 2010 Macbook Air $999

11-inch Screen
1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2GB memory
64GB flash storage
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
5 Hour Battery Life

explain to me how?
other then that it is thinner and more portable?

People buy it cause it's new and they want to look "cool". Any person that actually knows anything about technology knows that 13 inch white macbook is more powerful.

Find a PC that matches the Air spec for spec and let's compare prices then. Otherwise, I stick to what I said, jealous people are being jealous. Btw :

- Size is a spec
- Weight is a spec

I'll help you out right now : Sony Vaio Z is more expensive, Sony Vaio X doesn't have a proper CPU, Dell doesn't make anything near that size with the proper CPU and graphics, Lenovo only ships Intel graphics.

That's a few less to go through on your end.

And again, underspecced means it's not up to doing what you want to do, not that it has lower specs than an other PC. The fact is, the MBA can do much more than playback music and do Internet. My MacBook can do much more and is not even as powerful as the MBA.

I bought it because I didn't need the "more power" in the 13 inch MacBook but I did want the higher res screen. The SSD was just frosting.

yeah i just felt like showing the person who said the base macbook air was a more usable machine

Some people think power and specs are cool. Others just like to use their computers. The reviews are increasingly making the 11.6" sound quite usable despite my own reservations about the screen size.

the base macbook air is overpriced
it should be atleast $50-$100 cheaper since it's apple's version of a netbook

The only thing that disappointed me with these new models is that they didn't come standard with 4 GB of RAM.

You would have to think that these new Airs had Lion in mind when they were being designed. Can we assume that Lion will run well in the standard configuration with only 2 GB of RAM?

For future proofing, 4 GB of RAM seems like a better way to go, and it would be nice if you can just go into a store and pick one up.

Why does everyone assume that Lion is going to need a lot of RAM?

Oh, FFS, every Mac should be cheaper if you're going to compare them to similarly spec'd PCs.

I'm not surprised it's selling out. It's a sexy laptop. It's only a matter of time until Apple kills the white MacBook, now.

Not seen any figures but I am certain the Air will outsell the white macbook this quarter.

yes because it's apple's new gadget and the new "cool" thing to have
outselling doesn't mean it's better

a 64 GB SSD? they make ipod's bigger then that
the base model is nothing more then a overpriced toy

Base model will be fine for many

There are going to be some whiz kids making great things with this little base model MBA and its 64 gb storage and 2 gb ram that others could never create with the most powerful mac out there.

I can't wait to hear stories about what people will do/write/make with this little entry model MBA. The possibilities are endless.

I did a few tests for the 11" MBA at the apple store, yesterday.

With the default configuration, it could barely handle more than 2 tracks using the software keyboard note entry feature. Even if you lock tracks, it becomes almost unusable. It might work better with a midi-USB keyboard, though. Still, it really starts to chug along right away.

I think for those wanting the decent performance on the unit, 4 gigs is a must. That should have been the default config, though 2 gigs will handle basic operations. I would imagine iMovie and Garageband would be nigh unusable without the upgrade. So it's likely the 1199 price point is the first *usable* price point if you want to go beyond iWork, iPhoto, and unlimited Web Browsing options. (Though you'll want the ram upgrade to handle some of the flash stuff which needs a little more muscle).

I think the 2 Gigs makes it too quick for the system to have to page through virtual and fight the GPU for memory space. So you're probably at a real loss if you want to make music on the thing (default config). This would be in comparison to my Macbook Pro 13" which can fully handle a 40+ piece orchestra with layered effects, lots of audio and internal instrument tracks, etc. in Logic Pro. I was hoping that the SSD speeds would help this unit out with the locked tracks, but the memory issue can't be bypassed unless it's upgraded, it seems.

Those are the two things I will be using on my 11.6" (soon, I hope). How do they run, especially Adobe CS5 InDesign?

I've only used Photoshop/ Dreamweaver which are OK, haven't tried InDesign but as that's more demanding I have a feeling it may struggle slightly.

I agree. I have a PC that would kill a iMac for half of the price but Windows 7 cripples the speed after only 6 months. My Mac Mini seems faster.

Windows 7 is awful
looks like Microsoft is going to have yet again announce another new OS faster then they wanted to
