Looks like my 2+ year wait is for nothing. Leaning towards a new iMac instead. Cost is not the issue. Timing is. I need the tax break this year to lower my tax bracket.

Listen, if you need a Mac Pro, then you need a Mac Pro. I'm working with the Business Group at Apple right now and I'm in the same boat as you. They've already offered to sell me a couple of loaded up rMBPs so I can take the expense this year and then exchange them in a month or two when the Mac Pro arrives.

Seriously?

So why show photos and videos showing all those workers making all those Mac Pros months ago? Surely they had time to make plenty of units in all that time, right?

Its simple, there are no parts to assemble the computers with. Intel has been saying for 6 months the E5 v2 production would not be in full swing till 2014. So Boxx, Apple, Dell etc are all scrounging for the trickle of Xeon's there is currently.

Anyways I knew my BTO order would not show up till Valentines day. I have not seen any other venders with the 1680 available for sale yet (Other than apple this morning).

I'll be ordering first thing in the new year, since I want the 2014 tax credit. Hopefully there are some reviews, and maybe even another TB peripheral and cheaper 3rd party ram prices by Feb.

Oh Phil:D

I think most of us could have anticipated this from the timeframe thus far:

Announced at WWDC with availability "this fall."

To be fair to Apple this is incorrect.

Official keynote approx 59:30 you see a slide very clearly say 'later this year' same as Phil says

No. If anything more robots. But I doubt this ramp up has the factory running at full capacity, esp. for an all-new product. Typically production lines are slower at start up to give everyone time to learn the routines & make adjustments.

I would add that this product really isn't one that historically gets huge mass sales, especially if the base model. They don't want to pull a Surface RT and make bunches and bunches that won't sell. So they might be holding back to see what the order pattern looks like

It's a relief that it won't be available for 2 months...
I am seriously doubting this machine is worth the upgrade from my 12-core...
My geek bench tests show around 23000. The new 6-core is barely faster than a top iMac. It's a joke.
The numbers don't add up. To match the performance of my old Mac Pro I need to spend $8000 tax included.
I can probably get $3500 or so for all the stuff I already have on eBay but I still have to shell out $4500 more for just a little bit more performance and no way to expand internally.
Doesn't seem like the right move.
After you start adding peripherals and the monitor and stuff, you will end up with a disgusting web of cables on your desk.
I have 6 HD's incide My Mac and without any cables or power supplies.
I'm glad it sold out. I won't be getting one any time soon...

I'm so disappointed with this new mac pro. I found out (in another thread on here) that you can't swap out the SSD, you're stuck with the one you get when you order the machine; the graphic cards aren't upgradable either...

And it's so bloody expensive. The low end machine is pretty much matchable in the benchmarks by an iMac... hardly comes with any ram (12gb, with 3 X4 sticks... what a joke! why not two 8's).

Anyway, now there is really no machine Apple builds that is truly user upgradable except by sticking USB or thunderbolt devices on to it... the end result is an ugly looking ridiculously expensive computer. I suppose if you have $10K to put into it you might come out nicely...

But whatever happened to the headless machines where you could add your own monitors?

I'm using a mac mini now (my older mac pro couldn't upgrade to Mavericks); max 16gb memory, no graphics card, and my second monitor doesn't work properly....

I have the money, want something better than a mac mini and don't really want an iMac.

I also want to be able to upgrade later if I want to....

I've been buying macs for over 20 years...

Apple failed me.

Really wish Apple would post to what extent this is big demand vs low supply. There has been a lot of b***hing on the forums about how crap the new Mac Pro is but this seems to go strongly against that. Personally I wasn't overly impressed, I love the current tower layout but fortunately all my big computations run in Linux so its not an issue for me, but I'm a little surprised by just how many pros are willing to ditch user upgradability for the new machine.

Exactly what i predicted...and it makes sense

In a different post I predicted a quasi-soft launch in December to meet their stated commitment with a full ramp up in the New Year...and it makes total sense: it is a niche device with, I suspect great margins, but Apple is making tons of money on the pad and phones with large Margins and the volumes are crazy high at the moment.

Yes, there is pent up demand for a device that will cost the technical consumer somewhere between $5,000 and $13,000+ but the volumes will be low compared the consumer electronic devices....so February it is for the Mac Pro.

You've waited years for this device so now you have to wait two more months. Ok.

I don't think it's many pros, but many consumers wanting a pretty machine.

This is a headless machine that you can add your own monitor. Just like the mini...

This machine is also ridiculously upgradeable with thunderbolt. I like the fact that I don't need an gigantic machine sitting under/on my desk with 50% open space inside it just in case I want to cram something in it.

It also makes it easier to share and access all of those upgrades/expansions with other computers.

If you've been buying macs for over 20 years, this really shouldn't be any kind of surprise for you.

The graphic cards aren't replaceable but the SSD is.

Mac Pro Tech Specs

Under Memory, it says "User accessible," we know that the memory can be replaced.

Under Storage, it says "User accessible," meaning that the SSD can be replaced, if you have an SSD that fits the Mac Pro specifications.

Ordered mine early this morning still waiting for acknowledgement and time frame, I ordered a fully loaded 6 core so let's hope it's not a crazy wait

i just configured myself a 13K computer! :D opps forgot the keyboard and mouse....

13,100. ;)

honestly, i'd love to have one of those bad bays! very impressive.

...yeah.
Knew this was goign to happen.
I was up at midnight catching up on Classic Doctor Who (thank you BBC and Hulu) and I was totally on teh store when it went live.
I just had a hard time committing to $7k when I am half awake, given my history of questionable late night internet purchases.
Well that and it doesn't come with a keyboard or mouse.
