Maybe the will release two more displays so they can have a 21.5, 24 and 27 inch screen line up.

I sure hope so, but knowing Apple and their odd fetish for eliminating choices and options, they'll discontinue the 24" and the 30" the second they introduce the 21.5" and the 27"

Actually, the shipping window seems to have slipped a lot more than that. From the order status for a current order on Apple's tracking page:

Order Date: Apr 16, 2010
Product / Part No.
Qty
APPLE CIN HD DISPLAY 30" FLAT PANEL-USA
M9179LL/A
1
Recycling Fee
Ships: May 14
Delivers: May 19

It's not shipping in "5-7 days" --- that's more like a month.

Nice to hear! Who wants to bet on May 18 as the release of both new Mac Pros and new ACDs???

Sounds about right! By then the new hexacore processors should be pretty widely available and Apple will have their second round of "iPad madness" out of their system.

Oh I take it you got my memo from the Sandy Bridge thread in the MP forums? :p

Yea, you bring up a good point on the iPad as well. It will have been about two weeks after the 3G launch, which was the same 2 week time frame from when the MBPs got updated and the original iPad launch.

I think this could be it....:)

I like the way you think! That is exactly what I thought as I wrote that.

Thanks. Thats what a full year of waiting for this machine does to an already desperately speculative mind.

But I really don't see Apple waiting until WWDC to unveil a new MP. As if the wait isn't an insult to waiting customers and professionals already, having Mr. Jobs stand up on stage to announce their most cutting edge machines with several month old processors is just a slap in the face. Even if the MP is redesigned or features some other huge addition (lightpeak), the long wait to get the Intel tprocessors to customers keeps the mood anti-climactic.

Now, the ACDs I can see being unveiled at WWDC, so maybe they won't be launched together, but thats ok. As long as the MPs come out as soon as possible. ACDs don't run on Intel road maps, so it isn't vital for an immediate release.

Excellent post. I agree with you on everything. :)

I honestly feel like Apple didn't want to wait this long to release the update. I think they really wanted to get the updated Mac Pros out before the MBP update, but couldn't due to a shortage of the processors. Within the last few days though, it appears large supplies of the processors are coming in.

Apple is definitely starting to run out of excuses.

You are so correct. *applauding* 16:9 format is terrible to work on. it is good for movies but thats it.

You do know that pretty much the reason laptops went with 16:10 "widescreen" was due to the fact that they wanted to display media player controls, right?

Widescreen is great for side-by-side work. Like viewing multiple pages at once.

Since QuickTime and most other video players now have the disappearing media controls, what's the point to 16:10?

6 Years! It's high time for 3840 x 2400 in maybe a 32" diagonal.

C'mon Apple, time to lead the resolution game again, not step down.

Let's all remember that Apple is just putting the panels from other companies into their Apple cases. Apple doesn't make the panels, and therefore can't produce anything that the panel makers don't have.

i.e. A 32" 3840x2400 ACD. You can believe that Samsung/Panasonic/LG would have announced such a panel first.

Personally, I am not in such a tiff about the ACDs as much as I am about the Mac Pros. Dell makes a pretty sweet 27" monitor that uses the same panel as the iMac and is matte as far as I remember.

When I do pick up my new Mac Pro or refurbished Nehalem MP I will pick up either Dell's or Apple's monitors, whichever tickles my fancy.

I hope that Apple plans to bring out more sizes, I've been waiting for Apple to update the 30" inch ever sense I got my Mac Pro back in 2008 and when Apple released the 24" inch back in Oct. 2008 I was hopping soon after the 30" inch will get updated as well, So I hope the wait is finally over. Apple should make a stand alone 21.5 inch LED, 24" inch LED, 27" inch LED, and a 32" LED that will be a awesome display lineup something for everyone for every budget

Have you been able to find that Dell model, the U2711? It's not listed on their site. Links from articles when it was first introduced go to a page that says: "The product you have selected is not currently available for online purchase in the segment you have selected."

I think this Dell display, if it is going to be released, was not LED backlit.

Interesting, I can't find it on Dell.com anymore.

The Dell 27" was the same panel as the iMac, but it was CCFL lit, not LED.

I think it was $1099.

IIRC, when 30" ADC came out, it was the first mainstream monitor with that resolution. Panel manufacturers can cat custom pieces.
When 27" iMac came out there was no similiar display.

Too bad that it doesn't have led backlight. I wouldn't drop $1k in 2010 for display without it.

The lack of LED backlighting probably has to do with the yellow-tint issues. Rumors point to the LED lighting being responsible for it. Hence why Dell's displays were unaffected while the iMac was. (since they're both using the same display)

this is getting ridiculous. If they don't release a 30" with a matte screen, how can they even call it an upgrade? I'd stick with the 6 year old ACD rather than buy a 27" LED display with that horrrible horrible gloss.

I completely agree. It is refreshing to see a fellow Apple user criticize Apple's practice of form-over-function.

Fanboys will defend any horrible decision that Apple makes. But people who actually do work on their Macs know that a 27" LED display would be horrible, as the 2560 pixel horizontal at 27" would make text too small, especially since the 27" pixel horizontal is less than the 30"'s 1600 pixels due to its 16:9 aspect ratio.

Also, I'm hoping the revision does not have an LED backlight, because the older CCFL backlight is far better for calibrating the display with a colorimeter.

Of course, none of the above matters to fanboys. Fanboys are more concerned with form factor instead of functionality.

Have you even used a 27" display like the ones in the iMacs? I have. Text is far from being 'too small,' IMO. Horrible if you're blind, maybe, but otherwise they're very nice screens.

BTW, anyone who's having to wait for Apple to ship a ACD 30", you might be able to find one at local retailers... and possibly for cheaper too.

I walked in to Fry's Electronics and picked mine up for at least a $100 less than the Apple price.
http://www.frys.com/product/4106693

I believe I actually got a better deal than the $1699 that's listed on the Fry's site today. It was a few months ago and I don't remember what I paid.

With the retail discount and the already reduced price of the ACD 30" from its original super high price, it brings the ACD 30" to a price competitive level to other 30" LCD monitors out there.

I don't regret buying this "4+ old" monitor one bit.
