If you understand what I am saying then why do you insist that the data must be converted. It is in the same format. The only difference is that iTunes reads the Verizon backup as coming from an older firmware version. If by convert you mean read that a backup is from a Verizon iphone on the same build (for all intensive purposes) and allow a restore of the backup, then yes it should, but that would not be converting anything. We do seem to agree however that Apple should have thought of that issue before releasing the Verizon iPhone on a different version numbering scheme. But then again, this issue probably does not come up often.

Yeah, you're very caught up in semantics. Not sure why. The words don't matter. What I'm saying, and said a few times, is I can't believe that there is no way to do this, and it's all Apple's fault, and completely within Apple's control and ability to fix it, and they don't. Capiche?

There is a way to do this, it's just not out yet. I love how you seemed to COMPLETELY SKIP OVER THAT WHEN YOU READ MY FIRST POST.

Anyway. Why do you continually borderline insult the people who are trying to help you understand the situation you've presented to us?

If you find it so shocking, call Apple Support and complain. I'm sure they'd be glad to hear about it since They went through this exact same problem a few months ago. :)

Not to fan the flame, but considering we're on a forum made up of only words... I think the words are all that matter..

As I stated in my last post, I agree with you on your last point. However the issue probably does not come up often enough to warrant a response from Apple. Also, I am not just "caught up in semantics." There is a big difference between converting a file format from one format to a completely different format and changing a programs response to reading a piece of information in a file. The first procedure would be called conversion, the second would not. To say any different is incorrect and misleading to anyone reading your posts. Capiche?

Well not sure how it worked for me, but I restored from backup my wife's at&t iPhone to her new verizon iPhone last week. I know it worked because her text messages and applications were transferred to the verizon phone. I did the same thing when the verizon iPhone first came out with my phone, everything restored from the backup. Not sure why it worked but it did.

The AT&T phone likely had 4.2.1 or lower.

The current version on the AT&T iPhone is 4.3.4. However when I did the restore it wouldn't show me the most recent backup, so my guess is that it was showing me the last backup that was at 4.2.1 or earlier.

It is clearly an issue of conversion, because I have a huge cache of data in one format, ATT iPhone format, and I'd like to put it on a Verizon iPhone but can't. iTunes should convert the data that I want for my new phone.

I don't care about the firmware version, I want contacts, calendar, texts, and settings. Apple made two "identical" phones that can't exchange that data. Pretty un-apple like. This is the same Apple that will migrate your old computer to your new, apps and all, even if the old one had Leopard and the new one has Lion.

Not very Apple-rific.

Back ups restore the firmware as well as the data. The backup contains the firmware which contains the data. iTunes does not Extract the data from a backup.

You client is a moron for not syncing her phone. It's automatic....

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, I just don't understand why you're saying it. Clearly you agree that Apple could CONVERT the data that's stored in the ATT backup to install it onto the VZ phone, right?

I do understand why iTunes refuses to make it easy for users to switch from ATT to Verizon. I DONT understand why Apple refuses to make it easy by not creating a conversion function. Pretty dumb.

The Verizon iPhone uses different hardware. The version of iOS inside of it is a special branch built specifically for it. Until iOS 5 is released the version numbers will be different because the two peices of software haven't been merged.

The backup is specifically designed to overwrite all data on the phone, it works as is. Do you really want a piece of software digging in your back up to convert stuff? What if there was a bug?

Apple can't fix your clients ignorance of not keeping her iPhone synced.
