I called the apartment leasing office today and voiced my concerns, and told them I just want to know if they are willing to let us out of the lease early due to this. The girl was really nice but said that they have to talk to someone else at the office who wasn't in today, so they should be calling me back tomorrow.

FWIW, tonight I was in my kitchen with the windows open and I heard three ghetto black guys right outside my window talking about the shooting; I couldn't hear exactly what they were saying but they were in that corner of the parking lot and I heard them talking about shells, so I'm pretty sure they were involved. I quickly pulled out my phone to call the police but by the time I did they had taken off.

That sounds racist.

The only difference between you and them is that you're discussing it here, and they were discussing it out loud. You didn't even hear what they said, exactly.

Get a grip.

They were standing in the corner where the shooting happened, and I heard them talking about getting shells right there. I didn't hear everything, but they certainly were talking about the shooting, that much was clear.

You know what the real difference is? I live here, they don't, and they came hopping over the side fence after dark to return to the area. That means if they were talking about the shooting they had something to do with it. If they don't live here and had nothing to do with the shooting, why would they just conveniently happen to be standing RIGHT in the corner where it happened, after dark, the next day, talking about it? I guess it's also a little convenient that there were three black guys, which match the description of what another resident saw the day of the shooting, right? A spade's a spade.

Sorry if "ghetto black guys" offends you, it's not racist. They were ghetto, swearing, speaking ebonics, wearing big baggy clothes, and they were black. Deal with it, one is not related to the other. There are plenty of ghetto white people, asian people, hispanic people, whatever. I didn't say three *******, so I'm not sure how you are equating the simple term "black" with being racist. It's too bad people are too unintelligent to realize that using race to describe someone isn't racist. If that were the case, every single cop asking for a description of a suspect would be a racist too. "BLACK" != RACISM

Puma - I am not disputing anything you are saying...

It sounds like you may still be suffering some shock from the event. May I, respectively, suggest you and your wife go and talk with a counsellor? I would bet after even one or two sessions of being able to express yourselves freely will allow you to move on. Perhaps your medical insurance will cover this? If you don't need it, perhaps your wife does? She'll need you there, to help support her.

You suffered a rather large shock to the system. No one wants to have the safety of their home violated. And even though there was no physical intrusion into your home in this case... the fact that it easily could have may have had the same effect.

Good Luck with this...

I am certainly not going to to suggest anyone break the law. Regardless of what country your reside.

Gun safety course aside, a defensive firearm minus ammo is nothing more that an expensive paperweight.

YMMV.

Good Heavens - I live in gun-control Canada, and even I know that every gun safety course teaches you to store the weapon and the ammo separately.... in some jurisdictions I believe it's the law...

So true.

There are many great things about the Japanese culture, and certainly a crime free society is one of them. At least from my short time there.

Didn't you used to live in Japan? You should have stayed there. :p

You can't put gun safety aside. The vast majority people killed by guns are not criminals shot by someone defending themselves, but are wives/husbands/partners/family-members/friends shot during an argument. By a gun that was supposed to be used for self-defense.

Criminals don't break into homes nearly as often as couples have violent arguments.

Yes... I can provide a link. It comes from a King County Public Health Department study... and they like to change their library website on a regular basis.

It only sounds racist if you don't live around ghetto black people. :D Everyone else knows who he is talking about, even black people.

Still haven't figured out why you need a full winter coat with a hood up in the middle of summer.

Note that at that time in King County, the rate of firearm deaths per 100,000 was 7.9 vs a National average of 11.3 firearm deaths per 100,000.
Note also that two thirds of all firearm deaths in King County were suicides, not homicides. So, in the 1st bullet in the summary below, there were about 15 innocent people killed - in the home - for each 1 criminal shot while trying to break into the home. Of those 15 people, 12 were family members, friends and acquaintances. Usually during a domestic dispute when someone reached for a gun, in a fit of passion. And that is why you store a gun and it's ammo separately.... you need to give the person who is about to become a murderer time to come to their senses.

Americans are not in danger of people of robbing their homes, they are in danger of their family members shooting them during an argument.

Below is the summary of the report....
-In King County there were 43 firearm suicides, criminal homicides, or unintentional deaths involving a gun kept in the home for every 1 case of homicide for self-protection. Firearm deaths that occurred in King County homes involved friends or acquaintances 12 times as often as strangers.1
-Two-thirds of firearm deaths that occurred in King County occurred inside a home or other residential dwelling. Over half of these incidents occurred in the residence in which the firearm involved was kept.1
-Firearms kept in the home are associated with an increase in the risk of a homicide occurring in the home, especially by a family member or intimate acquaintenance.

Well that's good that your'e safe

If only he had a gun of his own, then he could have defended himself if he was the target of a violent attack

Can you imagine having to explain to the police why you were shooting in a random shooting that just occurred. Oh man. That would probably not work out well.

That's funny. Look at your reaction because you saw people talking in hoodies.

And I never once inferred that using the word "black" was racist. However, you are stereotyping and racially profiling these people. Perhaps your neighbour's description matched what you saw because he/she is as "intelligent" as you are (and much more so than I), and described the suspects to the police as "ghetto black kids who were swearing, speaking ebonics, and wearing big baggy clothes." Sure, it's a bit '90s, but you just described a LOT of black guys. I think I see the suspects in a music video right now!!

Besides, if you were the shooter, the chances that they'd go back to the scene of the crime the very next day are slimmer than those 3 black guys being.....well........being black guys standing on the corner.

"Ghetto black guys" is offensive because it doesn't add any value to your commentary on the day's events, and can therefore be interpreted as superfluous... or racist. If this was a homicide forum, or a discussion on crime patterns by demographic, then maybe you'd have some reason for such a description.

Though we can all certainly understand you being "shooken up," there's no need to attack people who take the time to empathize with your situation by calling them "unintelligent" or telling them to "get a grip."

Well you wouldn't be shooting at anybody unless they attacked you or came into your house or something. So you wouldn't really have to explain much to the police.

Scary stuff! I'm glad you were alright.

In my old apartment complex, we had a guy shoot himself when cleaning his gun (I know, this guy was an idiot though). Needless to say I was pretty surprised and kind of scared because my apartment was right above his.

If only you had some guns of your own, you could have shot back.
Unclear on the concept of stray bullets? Or just limited to bumper sticker logic?

Maybe they were police detectives? Just because they're black and sound "ghetto" doesn't mean they're up to no good

He didn't say they sound ghetto, he said they looked ghetto. Police officers don't go home and put on their gang wear after work, that I can assure you.
