Does the Verizon LTE model use a special sim card?
Short answer, NO.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) comes in three regional models – Americas, China, and Europe/Asia Pacific. Unlike iPhone, there isn't a worldwide Apple Watch Series 3 model that supports all cellular bands used globally, so it isn't possible for Apple Watch to roam.

In the USA, all 4 carriers use the same model. All Apple LTE watches have an embedded SIM aka eSIM. The eSIM is provisioned as part of the cellular activation process. Unlike a physical SIM, the eSIM does not come with a preassigned ICCID for a specific carrier. The ICCID is assigned and stored on the eSIM during the cellular provisioning process.

Note: You move between carriers with your Apple watch and your paired iPhone. Both devices must be activated on the same carrier, and same billing account which must be a post-paid account.

Originally I tried the Aluminum AW3. Returned it.

I liked the look and weight of the bright stainless better.

Since I did not buy it for the cell service specifically I’m still debating whether or not to activate it.

Thoughts?

Best to check it, went to activate mine yesterday and have spent the past two days trying to figure out what the problem is, verizon and apple. Have paired and paired and reset, tech support nor apple care advisors could get cellular to turn green on my watch. Apple says if they can’t get it fixed ill receive a replacement..

Just cancelled the cellular on my AW3 after I made sure that all of the promotional credits had posted to my account. With taxes, I was looking at $15.90 per month to have the cellular activated on the AW. I am an avid runner, but even with the built in cellular, I find myself taking my iPhone 7 with me on most runs for easy access to podcasts and audiobooks. For the few runs where I want to listen to music, I tend to use the same playlist anyways and I can just download those to the AW. I would be willing to pay around $5 per month to have cellular on my AW, not $16. Outside of running, I pretty much always keep my phone with me - there has been nothing liberating about having cellular on the AW, at least not for me.

Can’t blame you. That’s ridiculous. Verizon quoted me $1.51 in taxes and fees so $11.51 for me in California. Not ridiculous but, not reasonable either. I may cancel as I have found little us for cellular during the two months I’ve had my S3.
