I like to start new because throwing all of your backup onto the phone can really slow it down quick. I also like to start fresh to get rid of a lot of apps I don’t use anymore.
I have no idea where this myth came from. The backups aren't full OS backups that overwrite your current install. It's literally backup data (mainly apps) and settings (which can be restored to factory).

I like people's advice here (thanks) and will set up as new to remove any lingering issues.

Can someone provide a link to the step by step guide for setting up as new? I guess you first log into Apple ID to get calendar, contacts, photos...et al.

Then you have to connect to your laptop to import your songs? Download apps manually one at a time?

Thanks!

If you start from new how do you get all the apps you had back on there? Is there a list of them somewhere? They took it off iTunes for some reason.
I’d have to manually add each app ?

If you start from new you can download them from the app store in the purchased section. Of course they have to still be available in the App Store.
You may want to take screenshots of your homescreens so that you know which apps to download to the new one.

I realzied that if I setup as new I’ll lose all Health data and have to setup my Watch as new too. No way! Too much of a pain. That’s why they have backups. I think as long as you aren’t having a problem with the iPhone, resorting from a backup is fine.

iOS 11 has Health data syncing under iCloud now. Not sure about the Watch part though.

Well I got my X and couldn’t restore from backup regardless as I was running iOS 11.2 Beta

Oh no! Our phones will be here soon and we are on 11.2 Beta too. Were you able to get it to work?
You can set up the iPhone as new, install the beta profile, upgrade to 11.2 beta, and then restore from backup. I’ve done this before and it’s worked.
