I would really think this over, that is a ton of money or something that only tells the time...I mean the time on my iPhone is pretty damn accurate ;) You may need this money for something else soon, something useful.

If you only think of it as merrily a watch, you will never understand. But I hope, that the people buying these watches. Have at least 6-12 months saved up in an emergency fund. I know I do, 6 months at bare minimum current living standards.

1) Who is the best of the best watch carrier? Rolex, Breitling?

2) Should I really spend my money on a very expensive watch? I can't decide so I want to hear other peoples opinion. It just seems a little silly and not too smart to invest $5,000+ on a watch. To me, it seems like a poor investment. Maybe if I was 50 years old+ but not being 26. However, the other side of me says it screw it. I work hard to get where I am at so if I want something I should buy it. What is your thought?

3) If you think I should conserve, what brand watch do you recommend that is still nice but not retarded expensive for a watch?

Thank you for any input.

Ok 1) is an impossible question to answer, but I would say that any watch brand which creates their OWN movements are decent options. The so-called "manufactures" with "in-house" movements are the ones to go for, I would get something like: JAEGER LE COULTRE, ROLEX, PANERAI (Some), Audemars Piguet, Girrard perragaux, Vacheron Constantin to name a few.

2) A watch is hardly ever an "investment" like many other things, most will depreciate the moment you start wearing it. Having said that some watches are very good at keeping their value and even increasing, like a Rolex or Panerai. A Rolex Daytona being a good example. But if you are going to buy a watch as an INVESTMENT, I would not consider it. Buy it if you LIKE them and are fascinated by the movements and craftsmanship.

3) It depends if you are gonna be like a 1 watch man kinda guy or want to get several, but if you are only gonna get 1 watch, I would recommend a Rolex Submariner. It is the ultimate DO IT ALL watch and the movement is very solid as well.

Hope that helps

I'm a watch guy. IMO Rolex is blahhh, it's nothing but a "ME TOO" watch and overrated. Most of the Breitling models are to bling blingy for me too. Most people buy a Rolex and don't even know what model they got or any specifics, just that it's a "Rolex". Funny thing is of all the movements, Rolex is about the worst as far as keeping time, there are cheaper ETA ones that keep better time and other things than most Rolex movements lol. Panerai I don't care for either, looks like their rage has slowed down a lot vs last few years.

There are so many watches I would choose before any Rolex. From Hammilton, to JLC, to Chopard, Ebel (1911 BTR is sharp), Carl F Bucherer etc.

I have a Rolex Submariner and love it. Wear it everyday. I feel naked and lost without it. Got it when I was 20 years old after getting my frist real job, and have that same watch on my wrist right now, more than 25 years later. I consider it to be one of the best purchases I've ever made.

As far as which brand, ROLEX IS THE ONE AND ONLY!

Yep.

Get a Submariner. You'll feel like a million bucks every time you put it on.

Doxa or Bell & Ross

The clone trap is a viable argument, the last thing you want is to be in company that is all wearing the same watch. I am interested in watches too but i am always looking for something unique. How about Doxa or Bell & Ross ?

+1

Get this one;

Every time I see someone wearing a Rolex Submariner, I think of that person having class and style. Some here will not agree, but think of yourself wearing it........If you can afford it, treat yourself.
Post a pic if you get it.
:)

You clearly dont know what you are talking about...Please show me any ETA movement that keeps better time than a Rolex Movement. The Daytona in house Rolex chronograph movement is one of the best chronograph movements ever made. Yes the Zenith one is probably better but the Rolex one is very good too...ETA being better than Rolex!???? u must be out of ur mind.

I agree about the ME TOO rage about rolex, but a submariner is a classic and if youre a 1 watch guy, its a nice watch to get.

Maybe your wife bought a Rolex to say that she has one and there are plenty of people like that, but you're wrong to group all Rolex owners like that. It's like saying that people only buy Apple so people will know that they own an Apple. Before the 80's, Rolex was known as a tool watch. A lot of the military wore them because of the quality. It wasn't until the 80's when it started to become a luxury brand.

It wasn't all that long ago that AAFES sold Rolexes. I remember seeing them in the catalogs in the 90s.

Come by my place and I'll show you several ETA 2892 based movements which are far more accurate than a Rolex 3135.

The 3135 I'm wearing as I type this does about as good a job of keeping time as my 40 some odd year old Omega cal. 565 does.

The 2892/A2 is a solid, dependable movement. As far as reliability and accuracy goes, the 2892 and 3135 are about as solid as it gets and really run neck-in-neck.

I'm normally not that excited by a Sub (nice watch and all but doesn't do much for me) but this one would be one I'd wear.

Sign me up.

I was at DeBoulle in Dallas and they had one in the case. Unfortunately Rolex will not warranty or work on it it since it has been altered.

I bought a rather unique Mickey Mouse watch when I worked at Disney a fair number of years ago. I was told when I got it it was the last one like it at Disney World - I got the display. Paid about $80 for it.

Fast forward to last year when my wife took it to a jeweler for a new battery as a surprise for Christmas. The jeweler appraised it at $700! I haven't been able to independently confirm that value. But I'm a bit more careful with it now.

OP if you havent already made up your mind I suggest taking a look at U-Boat or Bell&Ross watches. Different from the Rolexs and Tags, but still classy and prestigious.

I haven't really read all the thread, but I think everyone should have at least one nice watch. I have a Rolex Yacht-Master, in stainless and platinum(I hate yellow/rose gold in anything but coins, and prefer the look of platinum over white gold if/when I have the choice). Everyone has a Submariner, and I wanted something a little different. It's 40mm so it's not like it's huge; I like that I can just wear it every day and never have to think about it(not even to change it's battery or wind it). I don't know much about the movement or anything, but it's good enough for me.

Being 22 I do get some looks sometimes, bit whatever. It's the only watch I have (for now, until I get all my dad's). I'm not really into watches so one is enough, I prefer coins(an not only are they enjoyable, but can also be a great investment if you know what you're doing).

How many people here actually wear a watch as means of telling time? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm genuinely curious.

I used to wear a watch all the time but now I always have my phone on me so it seems like a bit of a waste of money. I know a few people who were given a Rolex or a Breitling for their birthday, but they wear them as accessories mainly, not to tell the time.

What are your thoughts on this?

As one who has been repairing watches since the age of 13 as a hobby, and professionally for almost the past 20 years, here's my 2 cents worth.

First off, I used to own a few expensive watches, Rolex, IWC, Jaeger-Le-Coultre etc. I sold them all in order to take my family on vacation as that was more important to me than the watches. I now own a cheap Citizen as it (as well as Seiko) offers excellent value for the money.

Of your two choices it obviously depends on the styling that most appeals to you. They are very different and each has it's own appeal. I personally would choose the Rolex for two main reasons.

Classical styling and easily recognized everywhere.

Secondly, if you buy one of the Rolex sport models, Submariner, Explorer etc, you'll have an easier time selling it and should recover most, if not 100% of your investment if you choose to sell it after 10 years or so. It's almost like free use of a fine watch for 10 years.

Whichever watch you choose, please do NOT think of it as investment to make money. If that's what you're looking for, you're better off with Apple stock, gold and property etc.

I check the time on mine, but I do get what you're saying. I wouldn't bother wearing a cheap watch(I do have a midsize Fossil that was like $150 that I wear when driving/working on my nitro RC cars, but pretty much all other times I rock my Rolex), I would just look at my phone for the time.

Taking out of it the fact that I enjoy wearing the watch because it looks nice, I'll address your question.

I've worn a watch to tell time since I was a child. Yes, I have a cell phone, but it's not always on my person, especially at home. When I'm elsewhere (say at work, driving in the car, or whatever) and I want to know the time, I'm not going to dig around in my pocket, take out my phone, turn it on, and look at the time when I can simply glance at my wrist.

Not to mention I don't like digital clocks; I'm more comfortable with hands on a clock face.

I check my watch for the time and date at least once a day. Yes I have an iPhone, but that's usually in my pocket. It's a lot easier and quicker to look at my wrist than taking the phone out of my front pants pocket. And if I forget my watch at home, I sometimes look at my wrist to check the time only to realize I'm not wearing my watch.

Well - I do like Rolex myself, the Submariner is classy, just like the Daytona is, and a Datejust is the classic choice - but, you might also consider the Heuer Monaco:

This one is old-time classy. The basic design has been around for ages and still looks as cool as it did in the old days.

Tudor is another one that is an alternative to Rolex - it's from the same company. I personally wear Seiko every day (it's a kinetic direct drive model), I don't really need to wear any watch more expensive than that.
