I am currently debating on the Rolex Milgauss GV for my next watch purchase, the history on the watch is interesting also. So the Milgauss has my vote (But not in white), I don't really care for the Day Date (To many out there). I probably would go for the Ball Engineer II, just from the looks and not really looking into the watch.

The Rolex name is not important in my book. I currently sport an Omega Planet Ocean and love it. As I and many others said, no one notices the watch. But it makes me happier wearing it and shows me what hard work can accomplish. Plus I am amazed by all the moving parts on the inside.

$800 for watch?

Sigh. I live in different world, I guess.

Mine was £400, about ten years ago. Worn every day, whatever I do. Looks as good as on the first day. So £40 a year is not expensive, but in ten years time it will be down to £20 a year. (Maurice Lacroix). The glass is something Apple should copy for the iPhone.

If you search for Rolex on older threads, not worth it. Photos inside show miserable workmanship on a $3,000 watch.

1. Rolex Milgauss - The only negative is it has orange. I'm really looking for something with no colors except silver and white.

Yes, somewhat glaring. Probably gold.

2. IWC Ingenieur - The downfall is I'm worried the face will be too small. I liked the fact that "Ingenieur" stands for engineer in french.

Agreed. Out of proportion to the band.

3. Ball Engineer II

Somewhat plain looking.

4. Rolex Day Date ii - This is a nice watch,

God help me, that is nice. Perfecto. Do they have the model, but without the precious jewels? How much.

5. TAG Heuer Aquaracer - Nice watch.

The bezel is too "busy", IMO.

6. Casio Edifice Chronograph Watch - Nice watch. Only $100 which is a big seller.

This could be your second watch, as it pleases you, but I take back what I said about the other "busy" one. Good grief.

Or has this been done?

Really, if you have $5k to blow on a watch then congrats. At your age I had a great job but somehow just had adult responsibilities that took much of my income. If you're not there then spend what you want.

You want silver and white?

Let me present you the Stainless Steel Daytona...

Or the Platinum Yacht-Master...

I'd say save your money and get a G-Shock or something. What can the watch really do for you besides tell time/date? I've never been into fancy accessories.

Don't buy a watch at all. There are clocks all around, everywhere. I haven't worn one in 20 years and am never late for anything.
Buy something nice for your honey instead.

My wife has a Rolex. Cost her an arm and a leg in her pre-responsibilty days. The thing stops between wearings. My cheap 'n' cheerful G-Shock, on the other hand... and it does exactly the same job.

People wearing Rolexes are wearing them because they are Rolexes, and want people to see. Which is sad. If you have money to waste, there are far nicer looking watches.

Maybe your wife bought a Rolex to say that she has one and there are plenty of people like that, but you're wrong to group all Rolex owners like that. It's like saying that people only buy Apple so people will know that they own an Apple. Before the 80's, Rolex was known as a tool watch. A lot of the military wore them because of the quality. It wasn't until the 80's when it started to become a luxury brand.

My Rolex rarely stops because I wear it everyday. Very few people know that I wear one because people don't know what a Rolex looks like. I posted two photos and I wonder how many people would know what brand of watch they were from a distance. Even close up, people wouldn't know unless they know the brand. And I don't go around telling people that I have one because I bought it for myself and not for others.

Rolex has become a victim of its own success. Most people just see a label and know nothing about the history and the contributions that were made to horology.

I don't believe Rolex quality is better than that of any other quality watch. Rolex give a lifetime guarantee, which doesn't mean we believe these watches are such quality they will last forever, but means we got you to part with so much dough we can afford never to charge you for repairs.

And this is only my opinion, so neither here more there, but seriously some of those Roles designs are as bad as the Timexes I wore in the 70s. Not everyone, of coure, but there are a lot of emperor's-new-clothes wearers out there.

I've worn my Rolex since purchase in 1984...and yes, Rolex does charge for repairs. You'd have a stroke over what a cleaning costs!

What do you consider a quality watch?

The Rolex warranty is two years if purchased from an Authorized Dealer. The thing about Rolex is their service. You can send a watch in for service and it will look brand new when you get it back. Yes, the service is usually about $600 but that is a fraction of what they cost. Omega's cost for a modern caliber is over $500 USD and Omegas usually cost half as much as a Rolex. So Omegas are more expensive to service based on cost.

Design is based on each person's view. I don't like every Rolex out there. I like Panerai's Radiomir collection especially since there is more history to that design, but most people prefer to Luminor for the large case and crown guard. A lot of people like Audemars Piguets, but I find their Royal Oak collection extremely ugly. I like Vacheron Constantin's Malte collection, but not there Overseas. I wouldn't mind a Patek Philippe, but they never could take the abuse that a Rolex can.

After one year of going watch crazy... A previous owned date just, then a Movado, I had a friend that owned a watch that I knew he couldn't afford unless knock-off. It wasn't a knock off but a company called Invicta made an damn near perfect copy of the submariner! 27 jewel movement... damn near perfect sweep. It fold the Regional Manager of the company that we where employed for. His exact words to him was, "We pay you too much". Wow!!! I eventually bought one as a weekend beater and it actually holds the time better. Loses less seconds per month than the Date just.
I took it to my watch dealer who is an authorize Rolex dealer and he says he sees these all the time. Off the record, he swears they are a great watch... just not the prestige. But as many have said, Citizen and swatch will give better results... But if Luxury is what you want then spend my friend... you only live once.

stops between wearings? LOL. i guess a battery operated quartz is far superior to a nice automatic movement. you are correct in assuming that some people are ignorant and wear rolexes for the sake of it, but certainly not everyone and probably more the exception than the rule. also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. this is obvious since you choose to sport a g-shock over a daytona or sub.

rolexes are only waranteed for (edit) 2 years, however, many reputable dealers will offer an extra year or two for no charge. you also have to take into consideration depreciation (or appreciation) when considering your investment. i have a several watches that are worth more than their original retail price. lastly, some people like timeless designs. that's probably why rolex has mostly made only subtle changes every few years for the majority of their designs.

to the OP: judging by your current choices, i'm assuming that you intend to keep this watch for a long time. they all have average resale at best, with the milgaus probably holding its value the best, although that really is a datejust with the magnetic resistance properties. if this is the case, get what you like, rolex or not. the stainless daytona is a great watch, but you'll never find one in good shape for $5k.

please don't buy a Rolex ... ever.

IWC Portuguese Watches is where you want to be.

International Watch Company.

Actually ... this is where you really want to be ... you want something with a history.

http://www.chrono24.com/en/iwc/big-pilot-watch-edition-antoine-exupery-refiw500422--id1803391.htm

also, I'd really go with a brown/tan leather band ... much more classy than a metal (even platinum) band. if you wanna look baller in metal that's ok, but serious people go with the leather.

I say go for it. just don't wear it to a shady part of town.

Where did you buy it? And is it branded Invicta or Rolex?

Invicta makes homage watches and I respect them for that. I would rather have someone buy a homage than a fake.

Crazy times

I am in the same boat,I am a business owner living in Miami ,and I do like nice watches like the breitlings bentley 6.75 ""I could afford a watch and enjoy it but I am in the wrong place to wear it ,here in Miami people get killed left and right for gold chains and watches ,it is stupid if you wear that kind of watch in Miami,as a daily watch,,you never know how wants that watch and they might kill you for it,know thieves and lowlifes know what is a rolex or a breitling or whatever that shines this %#~<|>|+**,,will do anything too get them even taking your life,,close too my house 4 African American in a car shoot a Cuban family in the back and his wife ,for a freaking 14 k chain !! So that's my dilemma and people that live around this crazy city know what I'm talking about,so what I have decided is not having one just because you are walking with something in your wrist that means a salary or a long long fix for this thugs, maybe when I move too west Hollywood or a place everyone is in a good level I'll buy a nice watch.note/in any way I'm racist in fact I'm cuban and a minority also, but I am blunt and speak the truth ,,and the majority are Afro Americans killing and destroying society and tourism in Miami ,,,

Juniors22 brings up a good point, I have been mugged in the pass in Orlando (Also a local business owner). But I was in the wrong part of town, well near the wrong part of town. Now I mostly wear my Omega when I wear a suit (as it's then covered up so no one can see). I bought the watch for my own personal enjoyment and the craftsmanship, I do not care if anyone else sees it.

With that said... Just be careful and know your surroundings. I will sometimes wear the watch if I know the area and it's a safe place, even in cargo shorts/polo shirt. But I also have my watch insured with my renters insurance, that includes theft within the US.

Wow I haven't considered wearing the watch in certain locations, but a good thought. I would have ended up wearing it everywhere which may not have been a safe thing to do.
