if you're going used, I would recommend getting the iphone 5. I think lte alone is worth the premium over a 4s.

I am currently on the 4S and love it. I went from 3GS to 4S and I am happy to be on the "S" upgrade cycle. I find that, although it is a small upgrade from the original release (4 & 5) I find that the improvement made is excellent. However, I am going to skip the 5S just on the basis I really like the size of the 4S and its just a personal preference. I have beta tested the 4S on iOS 7 and so fr found the chip works plenty well enough. Also the 4S camera is great and, having owned iPhones since day 1 (except the 5 but have friends who have it and played around with it a lot), I think the 4S is the best one released to date.

If you don't want to hang on until the 2014 iPhone, but want to upgrade, I'd recommend the 4S and hang on til 2015. But that's just my plan. Personally, I wish Apple offered the choice of screen size as, if I could get a 5S with the same screen size as a 4S, I'd be getting one. I know by 2014 or 2015, it seems I am going to have to accept a larger iPhone.

If the phone is doing the job for you, whats the problem using it ? If you feel the need of upgrade, go for the iphone 5S, It would have ios7 and will be faster than your iphone 3gs :)

I guess I'll get the 5S but that means I'll likely not upgrade for at least 3 years...

Thanks! Best reply so far.
But do you really think that I could buy an unlocked IPhone 4 for $120 and sell it for $80 in 2014 (5 years old)?

I'd say yes considering $120 would be a good deal now. I have a 4 at that moment as my In between phone.

I'm 80% sure that's what I'll end up doing. The rumors about a larger screen made it seem as if the IP6 would come out tomorrow, even though it'll probably just be a year from now of it'll follow the usual release pattern.

However, if I could choose a "pattern" it would not be an "S" pattern since the major differences occur between 4s-5,5s-6, etc.

well a couple of months ago I bought a locked iPhone 4 for $120. After the 5S comes out, I would expect the value of the 4 to drop. I can't imagine someone getting more than $150 for an unlocked iPhone 4 after the 5 is released. ...plus if it's locked to AT&T can't you get them unlocked cheap online?

And on my Craigslist (where I got all my numbers) iPhone 3GS models were listed for $75-100 as of a couple of months ago.

I couldn't find anything reasonable on Craigslist in my area...only things which made sense price-wise had cracked screens. Not sure if I should try eBay. Some IP4's get quite a few bids there.

I guess ebay is your way to go then but from what I've seen iPhones are more expensive there than Craigslist...my numbers probably not accurate for ebay.

You can also see if some of the non broken ones on Craigslist are sold yet ... If it's listed for $200 but hasn't sold in 2 weeks, maybe their price is too high and they'd be willing to take less to sell the phone.

Stop right there. If that's what it boils down to it's not a new phone that you need, but to get past the adolescent mindset of being embarrassed by your perfectly functional possessions.

Incidentally, I also have a 3GS and I'm thinking of upgrading too, but for practical reasons, not because I don't think my phone is cool enough anymore.

It almost would have been normal though if he had said he wanted to signal to the opposite sex that he was hip and sophisticated by having the new tech toy while cruising at the bars... Shallow, but normal.... but worrying about the people in the office and subway?

There's help for that :D

Well I think I'll get it, but again: off contract, full unlocked price. Hopefully not everyone will switch to a bigger screened IP6 a year after I buy it...

Get the 4S, its still best iPhone out there. If you wanna have tv remote as phone, buy the 5 or 5s. :D

Lol, by what metric is the 4S still the best iPhone?

For the OP, I'd say wait for the 6 if you can. I love my 5, but if you can hold out I think it'd be worth it.
