Get 16GB and hotest CPU the budget allows.

I was thinking the 2.6/16GB/256SSD model. Bit of a weird configuration as I can't justify spending an additional $500.00 for an SSD boost. Would this be alright? I would eventually upgrade the SSD down the road.

Also, I am a bit hesitant on reordering a new rMBP because of the IR problems people are having. Any issues for you guys? I am starting my second year of school today in graphic design and would hate to be without a computer for a while if I have to keep returning it for a good screen.

Why is this weird? I would do the same (although I think I could even do without the 2.6).

But it makes total sense, the SSD is the single one thing that can be upgraded. It won't be cheap but it may come down in the future. If you don't need more than 256 now I wouldn't bother either, at those prices.

I've had that configuration for two weeks, and I'm loving it. I've had no performance issues so far. My previous 3 LG screens had image retention, but this model has a Samsung screen, and I've had no image retention, backlight bleed, dead pixels, or odd coloration. I suppose that it's kind of a crap shoot, but I suppose that you could wait to return your current machine until you receive the 2.6/16 model and see how they compare.

You had to go through 3 replacements? Don't you think that is kind of unfair? I personally don't think it is worth the time nor money. You deserve what you paid for, and 3 bad screens isn't that — especially with Apple's near flawless history.

I think a lot of people do not care about the problems they are facing as long as they get a perfectly working "Apple", eventually. If you ask me, the company seems to be going to the dogs ever since Jobs died. Thats just my opinion.

Anyways, if I get a cMBP now I will be kicking myself about not getting the Retina; it's a catch-22. I am hoping that they had a bad batch and are smartening up.

Anyone recently buy one with a bad screen?

I think that it was more unfortunate than unfair. If you look back through the forums, you'll find that people have experienced issues with displays on iPhones, iPads, iMacs, standalone displays, etc. I still love Apple products, and the retina display is far superior to this silly employer issued HP that I have to use. Just trying to help out.

The wife and have rMBPs without problem. What you can not see from looking posts on this specific BBS, or any other, is what percentage of all rMBP owners are having problems. I guess only Apple knows the true sales figures and amount of trouble reports. Only Apple knows if rMBP has been more or less problematic since introduction that other products. Anyone else would be guessing.

You're right, it was unfortunate; not unfair. My apologies.

I know if Steve Jobs was alive today he would not stand for this negligence. He was an extreme perfectionist who obsessed over customer satisfaction by keeping his products intuitive. He was usually informed and quick to solve any issues his customers were facing.

I just hope Apple (today) keeps that in mind.

Here is my problem: I just bought a rMBP base model a few days ago, everything works great, besides the minor system glitches and heating up when playing a game. I was intending on getting a model with 16gb but the Apple store I went to cannot upgrade the modules in the store — I was told over the phone they could, but I guess they were mistaken and thought I was speaking of the older MBP models. So me — being impatient — I bought the 8GB model (2.3 GHz, 256 SSD) because I am going back to school next tuesday for graphic design, my second year.

I am sort of at a crossroads: I still have 11 days left in my return/exchange policy and need to decide if I should exchange it for a 2.6 GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD model instead. I am happy with what I have now but need to look down the road. I am currently using CS 5.5 Master Suite (will be upgrading) with some minor gaming. My program requires me to edit a lot of photos with Photoshop, illustrations with Illustrator, websites in fireworks, etc. I won't be multi-tasking to an extreme either, or using partitions, boot-camping or whatever with Windows — or anything; I may add an external monitor in the future, but thats it. I have tested out the system by opening multiple adobe programs with some editing without any page-outs.

I understand VRAM plays a big part for graphics and whatnot, but do I need the 16GB of RAM or should I be safe with the 8GB down the road for my future endeavours? I really don't want to have to go without this computer as it's a dream compared to my white Macbook, but I will do it if it secures me for future needs. It will just be a bit of a hassle having to do an exchange if I don't really need the upgrade, not to mention tacking on 300$ to the bill.

I am seriously stuck in a rut and need help. What should I do?:
Stick with the base model now (save money, not have to go without the computer for 10-14 days), or:
Upgrade to a model with 2.3/2.6 GHz, 16GB RAM, 256SSD (spend 200-300 dollars more, but have a somewhat faster more future-secure machine to give me peace of mind, but have to go without rMBP for 10-14 days)?

Get 16GB, it will give you the peace of mind, and it's very useful if you're planning on using VMs with Parallels, etc.

So I brought back my base model and I have made my order for a new rMBP with 2.6/16GB/256GB (can't justify 500 dollars for 256GB of additional storage) over the phone with a very nice lady who is an Apple sales rep. I was hesitant to make the order over the phone because of credit card info but she insisted it was safe and said she would get a kick-back from the order, a commission I guess.

So I made a deal with her, I told her I would make the order if she would add a note to it saying to make sure I get a Samsung screen instead of an LG one due to the image retention issues. She agreed but warned me the technicians may not follow the instructions on the order and I may end up getting an LG screen, I acknowledged and made the order.

If I do end up getting an LG with problems I can just bring it to the Apple Store in the next town over for a screen replacement.

I'm so excite! :p

Good luck! I'm still loving mine. :)
