i went to the apple store seen the 5k couldn't tell a difference unless you're watching 5k and working with 5 k photos which i don't do so unless you do that no point of getting it

anyway enjoy your purchase whichever way you decide to go.

Thanks. I got the exact same machine as you it seems (except I only got 24 GB of ram now - might upgrade later, I can see that I am using around 20 GB)

Be careful on Yosemite: don't look at the usage of memory, look at the pressure on it. If you're in green, you have enough RAM.
The OS now use all RAM available to cache differents elements: even if the 24 GB were used, it doesn't necesserally mean you are out of RAM.

I have 2 sessions always opened on mine, I never reboot and use Photoshop (batch processing), Bridge, Lightroom, iTunes, HandBreak, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, different 3D games and so far the 24 GB are enough, even with 16 GB I will be fine I think.
People buy 32 GB to have the top, but I'm sure not 20% of those people need it...

This.

Some people do need 32GB RAM, but if you can't explain why you need more than 16GB of RAM, you probably don't need it!

The big advantage of the 27" iMac is the easy-access RAM slots so that you don't have to buy it maxed-out for future proofing. Apple's prices are silly: you can get their 8GB, add another pair of 4GBs to make 16GB, then chuck the whole lot away and get 4x8GBs to get 32GB for less than getting a 32GB BTO.

The 32GB BTO price is insane... NEVER BUY THE RAM TO APPLE, we agree on that.
I bought mine with 8GB ;)

regret not going wireless keyboard

Check out the keyboard from logitech. Looks very much like an Apple keyboard. Is wireless and have numeric keypad as well (+ it charges on solar power. Pretty cool)

Thanks. I understand what you mean :)

So, the maxed out non-retina would be faster than the base retina?

I posted a GeekBench comparison with the 3 models.

2014 retina i7
2013 non-retina i7
2014 retina i5

My personal 2013 iMac actually scores in the 15,440 area consistently, making the gap between the 2013 ->2014 i7's even closer.

Even that being said, I will still most likely jump to a maxed retina iMac within a month or two.

Just to give you guys an update (now that you were so helpful :) )...

I bought the late 2013 imac, maxed out (i7, 4GB GPU, 512 SSD, 24GB Ram).

I just received it yesterday and I couldn't be happier.

:

You did the research then found the right machine for your needs. Congratulations!

P.S. I use a Logitech K811 Bluetooth Keyboard. It charges via USB, less than twice each month and I can connect it to my iPad or TV at the press of a button. I recommend it, but it may not be suitable for everyone.

not to be a hater or anything but......................most users won't see a difference on that small of a bump on a oc,i over clocked so many processors and the difference is very small, the retina screen is worth it for those who are going to use it for 4k and beyond, personally id wait for the next processor upgrade on macs and go from there if it's worth it
