Go for the cheaper computer every few years.

You would see a HUGE performance leap to a Mac Mini...so you could buy a new one every time they were updated for the next decade with that sort of money.

95% of computer users in the world don't need more than a base/mid-range iMac. Half of gamers don't need more than a top-end iMac.

Only people who do professional grade rendering and video editing need the power of a Mac Pro. And these people replace their Mac Pro's every 2-4 years because they NEED the extra power.

Don't get 1, get 2

Might as well max out some credit and get 2 or 3 of them just in case....

The imac every three years sounds like a good plan that would allow you to stay technologically current. But it is your money and it comes down to what you want and a high end Mac Pro would be sweet (for a few years).

Cheers

if i were to get the Imac, i'd get the best base model i could buy, which would happen to be just $300 less then the quad mac pro. I don't like the Imac design.

I went to the apple store today and compared the Imac 3.06 to the quad mac pro.

the Imac was noticably slower then the quad mac pro, enough to put me off. the trip to the store today, solidified that the minimum model i want is the quad mac pro. I wouldn't want to go any lower.

i probably wouldn't go all the way anyways, and just settle on the quad core mac pro.

By "noticeably slower" I'm assuming you mean it takes a few minutes extra to encode an HD movie, right? You tested that in the store?

In your situation, I'd opt for the Mac mini.
