Once the SDK is out, I don't see Apple having any approval rights over the types of software developed for the iPhone/Touch platform, any more than they have these rights for the Mac. How could they? The entire difference should be whether the software is developed properly or as a hack. Once the APIs are are out in the open, and developers can program without hacking, I think the hack application market will dry up, as it will no longer have a purpose.

Steve Jobs already confirmed that apps developed with the SDK will need to be digitally signed before being distributed - so, approved by Apple. And where are people going to download these approved apps from, and by what means will they install them? I'm guessing iTunes, but really I have no idea, do you?

Good point, but it's hard to imagine that Apple will want to review and approve each and every application developed, which would be a cumbersome process for everyone involved. The digital signatures are more a matter of authorization I believe, to prevent malicious software from unknown sources being loaded. Maybe the hacking community will survive the release of the SDK, if Apple makes the process of developing and distributing legitimate software a PITA. On the details, we'll have to wait and see I suppose.

i know this is dumb

im just gonna wait for this sdk to come out next month. im thinking nothing will happen but i don't want to be stuck with a phone i can't use. plus im a newbie when it comes to these programs and downgrading my phone(already tried and i had to restore it back to the original version.

Hacking the iPhone is certainly a different proposition than hacking the iPod Touch, so I can sympathize with your dilemma.

But this is of course a thread in the iPod Touch Hacks forum about the iPod Touch, not the iPhone. Jailbreaking the iPod Touch is a piece of piss, and easily reversed. If I can have the same apps I want but better developed with the SDK after February, and for free, I'll be the first to revert. In the meantime, I'm enjoying my free 'hacked' apps just fine. :)
