This part of his reply totally frames the Macbook/IPP comparison:
Yes, I factored that in when I wrote my reply. It's still silly to claim that the Macbook serves the needs of someone who is looking for a version of the iPad that runs OSX.

For some it may come down to their choice of operating system and desired input method.

The reason I'm considering the SP3 is the desire to have ONE device that does all I need. That's why I said it would nice if the IPP had OS X. It would be the Apple equivalent of the Surface which I believe is a great concept.
I agree. But neither the IPP nor the MB are close enough to that point of convergence to be a true alternative. Choosing one of those will cause you to choose one... tablet OR notebook. No amount of "MB is really the iPad running OSX" is going to change that.

The Surface (Pro and non alike) makes a fine notebook, but a subpar tablet.

I've owned a few Surface devices, and currently own a Surface 2 (as just part of my stable of devices that I regularly use). Even the ridiculed Surface 2 (running Windows RT) is a better fit for business professional use than the iPP is. But it (and all Windows-based tablets and hybrids) makes an inferior tablet. Specifically because of the lack of a quantity of quality, touch-optimized Modern UI apps. (before anyone says that they don't need apps they use IE: there are more to "apps" than simply app-ified frontends to websites) I almost always use the Surface 2 with the TypeCover, so in essence, it is a netbook.

I had been waiting for the iPad Pro to be released. What I needed from Apple to include with the iPP to make it a viable option for a converged device was very modest, almost embarrassingly little. They did not provide that. So I ended up with a new 11" MBA and iPad Air 2 combination (for traveling/commuting) for the same price as the 128GB iPP + keyboard cover. I'll stick with that combo until Apple adds those few things to the Pro.

With the way that I use my notebooks and my tablets, neither the iPP alone nor the MB alone could fit all those needs. I'm pretty sure that I'm not unique in that.

Ugh. You're not the first to say that and probably not the last, but the Macbook lacks the one factor (among others) that makes the iPad distinctive... a touchscreen. The Macbook doesn't support stylus (capacitive or active), cannot be used to view material in portrait mode (or would you advocate standing the Macbook on its side?). The direct interaction of marking up a PDF directly on the screen via touch and stylus is far superior to sliding a finger on a trackpad and trying to draw a circle or highlight. That's just one use case, there are many more where the Macbook isn't an iPad.

You never thought about the MB like that probably because it doesn't make sense. You've probably never thought about the MB as a wedge for splitting firewood either. :p

Oh I agree. An iPad is a much better solution for what you mention. I don't think a touch enabled OS X would work well.

Ok, first off, I haven't read any of the posts above me because I want to give my unfiltered opinion on this. I own both the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 3, and to be honest, the Surface disappointed me after using it for a few days, but because I needed a Windows Computer, I tolerated using it, but tried to avoid it. The hybrid functionality was lackluster because the tablet function was really buggy and the keyboard and trackpad in laptop mode were horrible, not to mention unreliable. When I got my iPad Pro, I originally didnt have the keyboard case, but I still liked having the big iPad for multitasking. When I finally got my keyboard case, I realized how great this device would be as a powerful iPad that could also replace my Mac for everything but video editing. I am really impressed with the iPad Pro, and in fact, I am typing on it right now.

So you feel the smart keyboard is better than the type cover and no mouse/touchpad at all is better than the touchpad on the typecover or just a Bluetooth mouse? Interesting...

Since you mentioned multitasking, I am curious if the iPad is better as it than the Surface. Can you open two instances of the same app? How does it work if you want to compare, say, two Excel files?

The type cover on the surface pro 3 is downright annoying, there is no key spacing so I end up hitting more than one key at once, and because Windows is still pointer based, you need to use the trackpad, which first, is very small, and second, needs way to much resistance to click. With the smart keyboard, there is plenty of key spacing, the keys are plenty bouncy, and since iOS is touch based, no trackpad is needed.

Multitasking on the Surface feels cramped, mostly because of the way windows handles scaling. I do admit that if you want to have two of the same app opened, the surface is the way to go, but i multitask better on the Pro.

Interesting. I have completely opposite experience. Though I only have the SP4 type cover.

They made a leap with the SP4 type cover and I did consider buying one, but I still prefer the stainless steel dome switches on the Smart Keyboard.
I think it's mostly personal tastes. I despise the Smart Keyboard and frankly the keyboard on the new Retina MacBook. People should try both before buying.

I hate the velvet material on the back of all Surface keyboards. It is the worst material when it comes to hygiene, and is impossible to clean. There is no reason why they need such soft material on the back of the keyboard, as it will not rub against the Surface screen.

The Smart keyboard is the not much better, as the insider of the origami cover is also made of some velvet materials. But at least that was necessary, since that part actually does rub against the iPad screen.

Exactly, I'm one of the people that actually prefer the keyboard on the retina MacBook, but a lot of people I know do not.

I guess M$ wants you to replace it every year haha.
