If I had one I'd probably hold onto it. It supports AR, next year's phone might have TouchID, notch-less display, maybe some kind of enhanced sensors for faster FaceID recognition... for one thing it will almost definitely have the new band that is currently only slated for the LG V30. Waiting is probably the best thing to do since 6S is the last/oldest phone that supports AR.

After watching a few reviews on the iPhone 8, I’ve kind-of ruled it out. It’s just such a tired design and the huge bezels and LED display just look old. The design language of new phones in the past year has been bezel-less and OLED. Even pop-up shops like the Essential Phone have this language. It’s ridiculous that Apple hasn’t done this across the board and I think they’re going to get slapped with really low sales of this iPhone 8. For those reasons I don’t want to give Apple one dollar for this device.

My other option, then, is the iPhone X. The iPhone X is what I think all iPhones should now be. It’s caught up to the competition and gone a little bit above and beyond. But I have a tough time justifying the cost. $1,000 is a lofty price for a device this... small. I mean, you can get a MacBook for the price. I also have to keep in mind the possibility that I’ll be buying an expensive OLED iPad Pro to upgrade my Pro 9.7 in the spring.

My third option is to keep my 6s until next year and hope for some less expensive edgeless models from Apple.

I guess what I’m asking is, what is your guys’ justification for buying the iPhone X and secondly, do you think there will eventually be sales for the X?
Do you need to upgrade?

Do you need to upgrade?
I’d say I need to upgrade in the next year, yes.

I'm in the same boat! My issue with the X is FaceID! I'd much rather stick with TouchID on my 6s. Why fix what ain't broken? And in the UK it's £1000 ...that's the price of a half decent holiday, a fully decent Windblows Laptop, or a semi-pro Camera system.

But the 6s is getting long in the tooth, and if I chop it in now I can recoup at least £200 of the £600 I paid for it. If I hang on to it for another year, it basically becomes a drawer filler.

Decisions, decisions.
Yes indeed. The trade-in value of my 6s is also something I’m cognizant about. It’s a tough decision, haha.

The solution: buy what is right for you.

I think the 6S is great. The SE is only a little bit behind (A9 vs A10) but they work great. I would say if the 6S is working for you and doing what you need it to do, hold off. The X really isn’t too different from the 8/8+ and even iOS 11 isn’t full with new phone features. If you need something specific from the X then maybe wait a bit then get it.

I’m in exactly the same situation, although I have a 6 with a rapidly declining battery life so I really need to upgrade before the end of the year.

I’ve fallen in love with the camera on the 8 plus in the Apple store but the form factor feels just slightly too big for me.

Sorry but I never understand the need for these threads. Why do you not just toss a coin.

Which side of the boat are you leaning towards at this time?
I think I might be leaning towards upgrading to the iPhone X. I’m just imagining my trade in value going down and down and with my current trade in the price of the X would be similar to the price of an 8.

Does he?

Boy, was that a bad decision!
Yup I do. At the time I didn’t think I’d need more than that so I went with a lower price tag. In my opinion it’s disgraceful that they ever sold phones with 16 gbs of storage, lol.

I have a 6s Plus, and if I go with another iPhone this time around, it'll most likely be an 8 Plus. I've gone and looked at them multiple times at Apple, and I think they're a nice upgrade. I like the not-really-a-button Touch ID, not to mention I want to keep Touch ID, and I would really like the dual lens camera because I take a lot of low light pics. Plus, ever since I tried Portrait Mode on my sister's 7 Plus, I've wanted it on my own phone.

I was talking to the sales rep at Apple today about Facial ID, and I'm not sure a lot of people realize how annoying it might be. I've had face recognition on a previous Android device, and I didn't use it much. It's cool looking, but think of the following: how many times have you been walking down the hall or down the street and you wanted to open your phone to do something? That's a really simple gesture with Touch ID. However, with facial recognition, walking down the street and unlocking your phone becomes awkward. Unless you stop walking to unlock, you have to keep walking and awkwardly hold your phone up to see your face in order to unlock. That's really annoying. You don't have to bother with walking and holding your phone up to your face at the same time in order to unlock with Touch ID.

I really don't think we should be talking about or bringing Android Face Recognition into this at all. FaceID with the iPhone X is meant to be Face Recognition done right.

If the 6S is running smooth for you a say keep it and wait till next year.

Even as far back as 2011, I avoided 16gb. When the iPad2 was released, I went w/32gb.

So... with the iPhone X, you don't have to hold the phone at an angle so that the cameras can see your face in order to unlock your phone? Because with Touch ID, the camera doesn't have to be at any angle that allows it to scan your face. I can literally reach into my pocket and unlock my phone before even pulling the phone out all the way, and then it's ready to use before I even look at it. That's very convenient when I'm walking around and talking to people or whatever. That's not possible with facial recognition.

That's the point, which you obviously missed.

I just want a bigger better screen and the dual improved cameras without the bulk of the Plus size.

The carriers will probably do sales of some sort eventually but it might not be much of one.

Agreed with this. Not to mention how expensive the X is going to be and that’s ruling it out for me as well... (it’s a phone at the end of the day)
This whole thought process has me leaning towards and s8+.
Can trade in my 6s the s8+ will be about 300 or so dollars cheaper, I’d have a nice screen and a large screen and I can utilize some features in a device that Apple is missing... I’ve been thinking of doing this the past couple days and it’ll require some more thought.
Only other downside is selling my Series 2 watch and either going to the Frontier, Fitbit or nothing...
